Davis Seeks Tryout Opportunities Before Next Season

Wednesday, July 22

The two-time All-Star made the comeback declaration during an appearance on SiriusXM NBA Radio on Tuesday. He's ready to prove there's still enough left in the tank for one more productive run.

"This is the first time I'm going to put myself out there, I'm going to try out for some teams," Davis said.

At his peak, the 36-year-old point guard was one of the best distributors in the NBA. He averaged at least eight assists per game in five seasons, the most impactful of which came with the Golden State Warriors.

He looked like a shell of his former self during his only season with the Knicks, however. His numbers suffered a major drop-off and then he suffered a knee injury in the playoffs.

Davis may receive a couple of tryouts based on his strong track record, and an invitation to training camp is a reasonable goal at this stage of his career. That said, the chances of him making a final roster and becoming a key piece of any rotation are slim.

"At his age and with so much time off, it’s doubtful that he’ll be able to make much of an impact on the court in 2015," Sean Highkin of ProBasketballTalk said about Davis' potential return. "But if a team is looking for a veteran presence and an insurance policy at point guard for the end of the bench, there are plenty of worse options out there."

Injuries sapped a lot of the electric playmaking ability that made him such a valuable asset during his prime. The time away may have allowed him to recuperate to a certain extent, but he'll probably never get all the way back to full strength.

His best chance of catching on with a team is if a contender loses a point guard to injury during camp or the preseason and is looking for some veteran depth. Even then, he wouldn't be expected to step into a marquee role. Those days are over.
