Ray McCallum to Spurs: Latest Trade Details, Comments and Reaction
The San Antonio Spurs had a void to fill at point guard after Cory Joseph bolted for the Toronto Raptors in free agency, and they didn't waste much time finding his replacement.
Dan McCarney of theย San Antonio Express Newsย reported the Spurs announced they have traded a second-round pick for Ray McCallum.
After the Kings reportedly agreed to terms on a one-year, $10 million deal with Rajon Rondo, according to Yahoo Sports' Marc Spears, Sacramento had a logjam at point guard with Darren Collison already occupying a spot on the depth chart.
McCallum proved to be the odd man out, and the Spurs scooped up the 24-year-old point man in a move that could pay dividends down the line. ย
Theย Toronto Sun's Ryan Wolstat wondered if Sacramento made a mistake by dealing a quality young talent for a pick that may not yield much in the way of future returns:ย
McCallum is a score-first point guard who played 21.1 minutes per game with the Kings during his second season after being selected at No. 36 overall by the Kings in the 2013 draft. In 68 appearances (30 starts) during the 2014-15 campaign, he averaged 7.4 points and 2.8 assists while shooting 43.8 percent from the field and 30.6 percent from three.ย
Back in June, McCallum posted a photo to Instagram documenting his offseason workout with Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook:
With plenty of room to grow, McCallum should benefit immensely from the developmental platform San Antonio will provide him. Not only will he be exposed to championship-caliber ball under the tutelage of head coach Gregg Popovich, but Tony Parker also will be able to teach him the ins and outs of a complex and point guard-friendly scheme.
