David Lee Reportedly Will Be Traded to Boston Celtics
David Lee is on the move. According to Marc Stein of ESPN, the Golden State Warriors have reached an agreement to trade Lee to the Boston Celtics. Stein reported the Celtics exchanged Gerald Wallace for the power forward, via SportsCenter.
On June 17, Stein reported Lee's representatives met with the Warriors, who agreed to attempt to seek a trade for the former All-Star after they won the championship. Lee, 32, will make $15.49 million in 2015-16, the final season of a six-year, $79.5 million contract he signed in 2010.
Viewed as a franchise cornerstone when he signed the deal, Lee acted as an offensive fulcrum for four of his five seasons with Golden State. He made the Western Conference All-Star team in 2012-13 and was part of one of the league's best-passing big-man duos with Andrew Bogut.
Circumstances changed this past season, however, as a preseason injury allowed Draymond Green to usurp Lee in the starting lineup. Green emerged as a Defensive Player of the Year candidate and emotional leader, while Lee, the team's highest-paid player, struggled to find a consistent role off the bench. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr did not play him in nine Warriors playoff games despite Lee being fully healthy.
"A lot of friends and family say, you haven't played as much, you [probably] can't stand Steve," Lee told Marc Berman of the New York Post this month. "I've answered: 'In fact I get along with him great off the court and he's been very honest with me on where I stand.' That's all you can ask. I'd like to play more, but he's done an unbelievable job as coach."
When Lee did get his playoff opportunities, he reminded many why he used to be such an instrumental figure. He scored 11 points in 13 minutes in Golden State's Game 3 loss to Cleveland, helping spark a fourth-quarter run that many saw as the turning point in the series. While his playing time then decreased to just one minute by Game 6, he was the perfect representation of the Warriors' team-first ideals.
Lee will be an unrestricted free agent next summer. It would make little sense for him to be content wallowing on the bench again. The Celtics may give him an opportunity to get more playing time ahead of his next contract.
