Nike Air Max Day 2015 Date and Shoe Release History
Today, March 26, Nike is once again celebrating Air Max Day. The company asks people to wear their Air Max shoes, whether they be a vintage pair or the recently released Nike Air Max Zero, to celebrate the occasion.
The Air Max Zero was the original concept for the brand that was eventually altered to create the Air Max 1 back in 1987. Nike has dubbed it "the one before the 1," and it was launched Sunday just in time for the latest jubilation.
Here are the launch details for the latest addition to the Air Max family, per Nike:
| Sunday, March 22 | White/Rift Blue/Hyper Jade/Midnight Navy | $150 |
There have been many variations of the Air Max style since the original was released in 1987. It's one of the most well-known varieties of Nike shoes. The company spotlighted a core of nine on its official site for the Air Max Day festivities:
| Air Max 1 | 1987 |
| Air Max 90 | 1990 |
| Air Max 180 | 1991 |
| Air Max 93 | 1993 |
| Air Max 95 | 1995 |
| Air Max 97 | 1997 |
| Air Max 2003 | 2003 |
| Air Max 360 | 2006 |
| Air Max 2015 | 2014 |
Few things are a bigger selling point right now than nostalgia. That's especially true for things from the late 1980s and into the '90s. So it made sense for Nike to release what's essentially a new shoe with a throwback concept in time for the latest Air Max Day.
Vibe Magazine provided a look at the Air Max Zero:
Sole Collector passed along another view of the new shoe:
In an era where companies are becoming more radical in their designs in an attempt to stand out in a crowded market, this shoe definitely has an old-school feel. A very clean look with a more basic color scheme throughout.
Although Nike ultimately decided to go another direction for the Air Max 1, the release of this shoe brings things full circle. By combining the classic look for the new-age technology, there's no reason it shouldn't be a hit with collectors.
As for Air Max Day itself, it's become a major marketing tool for Nike to bring recognition to the brand every year. Matt Welty of Complex explained how the anticipation brought the shoes back into the spotlight for the second annual event:
"Air Max Day has brought Air Maxes to the forefront of the sneaker discussion over the past week or so — ahead of the usual talk of Air Jordans anything NikeLab-related. Cars are driving around Korea in the shape of the most iconic Air Max models, and Nike has even used this as an opportunity to launch a whole new silhouette: the Air Max Zero, which is based off a sketch that Tinker Hatfield drew before he designed the initial Air Max 1.
"
Perhaps the Air Max brand isn't as iconic as some of Nike's other styles. It doesn't receive nearly as much year-round attention as Jordan-related releases, for example. But the company has now ensured it will take center stage at least once every year in March.
The Air Max Zero takes collectors back to a time when the shoe game was simpler. A time when less was more, a concept that makes a comeback every once in a while.
It certainly has for Air Max Day 2015.
