Former NBA Player Robert Swift Arrested: Latest Details and Comments

Tyler ConwayJan 8, 2015

Former NBA center Robert Swift was arrested Tuesday after allegedly attempting to break into a home in Gold Bar, Washington, Snohomish County Police have confirmed.

Amy Clancy of KIRO-TV reported Swift, 29, and an accomplice wore masks and attempted to break into the home before police arrived on the scene. A spokesperson for the Snohomish sheriff's office told Clancy that witnesses were able to identify the men and lead police in their direction.

“I believe there were a couple of people who called in, they saw masked subjects on the property, reported that at least one of them was armed with a weapon, one possibly with a baseball bat,” Shari Ireton said. “It appeared they were either trying to make an entry or knocking on the door.”

A warrant for Swift's arrest was already outstanding due to a pending case involving the unlawful possession of a shotgun. In November, Levi Pulkkinen of SeattlePI.com reported that Swift was charged in a King County case that saw authorities seize drugs, guns and a grenade launcher from the home where he was staying. Swift did not show up to a subsequent hearing related to the case, and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.

A 2004 first-round draft choice by the Seattle SuperSonics, Swift played 97 games over the course of four NBA seasons. He averaged 4.3 points and 3.9 rebounds per game before being dropped by the franchise, which has since relocated to Oklahoma City.

He bounced around minor leagues in the United States and Japan from 2009-2011 but gave up playing basketball altogether following a stint with the Tokyo Apache in 2011.

Swift has been in trouble with the law multiple times since leaving the sport. Police in the robbery case allege Swift admitted to being high on drugs at the time of his arrest. Clancy cited sources saying Swift was also heavily armed when apprehended.

No formal charges have been filed, and police say the investigation is ongoing.
