Steph Curry Becomes Fastest to 1,000 Career Three-Pointers
Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry set a new NBA record during Wednesday's 117-102 win over the Indiana Pacers, becoming the fastest player in league history to reach 1,000 career three-pointers made, per Elias Sports Bureau (via NBA.com/Stats).
Playing in just his 369th regular-season contest, Curry connected on four of his eight attempts from beyond the arc, giving him 1,003 three-pointers for his career. He finished the night with 21 points, three rebounds, 15 assists and four steals, with the assists matching his season-high mark.
The other half of Golden State's famous Splash Brothers duo had arguably an even better game, as guard Klay Thompson recorded 40 points, four rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block, with six of his 11 three-point attempts finding the mark.
With 641 three-pointers made through the first 261 games of his career, Thompson is on pace to reach 1,000 in his 408th game, which would be second-fastest in NBA history.
But Thompson has improved his per-game average for successful three-pointers each season, so he'll likely get to 1,000 in fewer than 400 games. To best Curry, Thompson would need to average 3.36 treys over his next 107 games, which would bring him to 1,000 in 368 contests.
That's a rather tall task, of course, as Portland Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews leads the NBA with 3.03 three-pointers per game this season. Thompson is right behind him at an even 3.0, followed by Curry at 2.97.
As for the record that Curry broke, the margin was nearly 100 games. The second-fastest to 1,000 career three-pointers was Dennis Scott, who took 457 games to get there.
Third place? None other than legendary marksman Ray Allen, who needed 473 games.
