Paul Pierce Injury: Updates on Wizards Star's Knee and Return

Matt FitzgeraldOct 17, 2014

Washington Wizards star Paul Pierce briefly exited Friday's preseason game against the Hornets with a right knee injury.

Jorge Castillo of The Washington Post reveals Pierce re-entered the game in the second half:

It will be worth monitoring Pierce's status moving forward, since he is approaching the end of his career. Durability has to be a concern over the course of an 82-game season, even though Pierce has held up rather well throughout his career.

The former Brooklyn Net has added a necessary veteran presence to the Wizards' young core, headlined by a lottery-pick backcourt featuring John Wall and Bradley Beal. Before the season, Pierce discussed how he'd embrace his role in the locker room.

"I'm a player that's going to say what I feel," Pierce said, per The Washington Post's Jorge Castillo. "If I'm thinking it and I feel like it's something that needs to be said, I'll say it. I'm not going to be a pushover kind of leader."

Michael Lee of The Washington Post pointed out how Pierce's long rivalry with Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James was another big reason why Pierce is a big asset:

The perimeter trio of Pierce, Wall and Beal has built considerable NBA hype in the nation's capital. Amid a top-heavy Eastern Conference, Washington is among the chief contenders.

Having a mentor in Pierce to help Wall and Beal take the proverbial next step is critical to the team's success in 2014-15. But his production on the court and his basketball IQ will be difficult to compensate for while he is on the mend.

The onus falls on Otto Porter Jr. to fill in at the small forward position. Porter had a quiet rookie campaign as the No. 3 overall pick of the 2013 draft, so Pierce is a key mentor to him, too. The better Porter plays in relief, the better it will serve the Wizards as they position themselves for a run in the playoffs.
