The 2013 FIBA Americas U16 Championship begins on Tuesday night, with the highly favored Americans opening up group play against continental rivals Mexico.

Team USA will be looking to pick up an initial win before showdowns with Argentina on Wednesday and the Bahamas on Thursday, as it attempts to advance out of Group A and into the semifinals to defend its championship.

Considering the Americans have captured gold in the only two FIBA America U16 Championships held—2009 marked the inaugural edition of this event, taking place every other year—it would be nothing short of a disappointment if they failed to three-peat.

Let’s take a look at where and how you can watch them take on Mexico, check out the current rosters for each team, make some predictions on the outcome and more.

Where: Maldonado, Uruguay

When: Tuesday, June 11, at 5 p.m.

*Maldonado is on Uruguay Summer Time (UYST), currently +1 hour from EDT.

USA vs. Mexico Preview

The Americans are clearly loaded with talent, as notable players like Seventh Woods, Harry Giles, Josh Jackson, V.J. King and more look to uphold the dominant tradition of their country in this event.

These patriots have a lot to live up to, as the inaugural Team USA U16 squad won their five games by an average of 33.8 points in 2009. The 2011 roster was even more impressive, marching to a gold medal and blowing out opponents by an average of 42.2 points in the same span.

Mexico enters the tournament coming off of a silver medal in the 2012 Centrobasket U15 Championship, losing the final game to Puerto Rico—a nation fortunate enough to land in Group B in this event.

The Mexican roster clearly doesn’t have the same level of talent, and it’s tough to imagine a scenario where the players will find a way to keep it competitive for the duration of the game on Tuesday.

Expect to see a showcase of young American talent simply dominating and running away with a huge victory to start this tournament off on the right foot.
