George Stephanopoulos Misidentifies Bill Russell as Morgan Freeman

Gabe ZaldivarPop Culture Lead WriterJanuary 21, 2013

ABC News' George Stephanopoulos saw Morgan Freeman at President Barack Obama's inauguration on Monday. The problem is he was looking at Celtics legend Bill Russell

The video, spotted by The Big Lead, provides one of the more hilarious moments from the pomp and pageantry that was the presidential inauguration.

The voice is that of Stephanopoulos, who wants to chime in with his wide swath of pop culture knowledge, proclaiming that the man in a Celtics hat is none other than The Shawshank Redemption's Morgan Freeman.

He didn't let the fact that the man didn't look like Freeman deter him, because he forged ahead with his celebrity sighting.

"That's Morgan Freeman, I think." It's really not.

Twitter then delivered some excellent responses, like this tweet from Zach Lowe.

Morgan Freeman is a pretty mean shot-blocker in pick-up games, though.

And this reply from King Kaufman.

Would you settle for Bill Russell? RT @jennyjohnsonhi5 This inauguration would be so much better if Morgan Freeman was narrating it.

Bill Russell is one of the best basketball players in the history of the game, but he managed a great trick at his advanced age—pulling off an epic Morgan Freeman impression.

And he didn't even know it.
