NBA Rumors: Amnestied Players Who Should Be Drawing Interest

Adam FromalJun 7, 2018

The NBA is one of the organizations that truly agrees with the phrase "one man's trash is another man's treasure."

We've already seen a number of NBA players get amnestied and picked up by other teams, but these five remain on the board.

All of them still hold value and should be able to find a new landing spot. Given the right situation, they could all resuscitate their careers.

Read on for the five remaining amnestied players and their best landing spots.

Chris Andersen

1 of 5

Last Team: Denver Nuggets

Position: C

Age: 34

2011-2012 Per-Game Stats: 5.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.4 blocks

Chris Andersen endured a difficult season with the Denver Nuggets last year.

He only played 15.2 minutes per game—although his 18.97 PER indicates that he was extremely effective in limited action—and was the subject of a probe by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office Internet Crimes Against Children Unit.

Although the distraction of Andersen's legal battle and the finances of his contract were both potential reasons for his release from the team, Fox Sports' Chris Tomasson reports that Andersen may not be charged with any crimes.

With his shot-blocking and rebounding skills, Andersen can still be a valuable player, even at 34 years of age. He's likely to clear waivers, but he could be a solid backup center for almost any team in the league.

Best Landing Spot: Los Angeles Clippers

Andray Blatche

2 of 5

Last Team: Washington Wizards

Position: PF

Age: 25

2011-2012 Per-Game Stats: 8.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, 0.7 blocks

At just 25 years old, Andray Blatche still has a ton of talent. We're only one year removed from his sensational 2010-2011 campaign, even though it feels like it's been forever.

That season, Blatche averaged 16.8 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game with a PER of 16.93.

However, he developed into a slug this past season, refusing to put forth any effort at all. Blatche even apologized for his lack of effort.

If Blatche can finally get in shape and stay motivated, he can be a major contributor. There's just a lot of risk involved in signing him because of his spotty history.

Blatche needs to sign with a team who can keep him under control—one with an authoritative head coach in charge on the sidelines. With Tim Duncan serving as a mentor and Stephen Jackson showing that the organization can rein in head cases, the San Antonio Spurs could be an intriguing option.

Best Landing Spot: San Antonio Spurs

Josh Childress

3 of 5

Last Team: Phoenix Suns

Position: SF

Age: 29

2011-2012 Per-Game Stats: 2.9 points, 1.0 assists, 2.8 rebounds

Who doesn't want an afro like that on their team?

Josh Childress was only amnestied by the Phoenix Suns for financial reasons. His play still merits inclusion in a rotation, even if he only played 14.4 minutes per game for the Suns last season and shot well below his career numbers.

If Childress, still relatively young at 29, can regain his confidence, he'll start drawing contact once more and utilizing his gifts from the charity stripe.

Without many small forwards on the roster, the Atlanta Hawks could use a return from Childress. Before going abroad to Olympiakos, Childress started his career with the Hawks and made a name for himself with the organization.

A return would give him more playing time in a familiar setting.

Ryan Gomes

4 of 5

Last Team: Los Angeles Clippers

Position: SF

Age: 29

2011-2012 Per-Game Stats: 2.3 points, 0.4 assists, 1.9 rebounds

Just like Josh Childress, Ryan Gomes was amnestied from his team for financial reasons. After the signings of Grant Hill and Lamar Odom, the Los Angeles Clippers just didn't need another backup small forward on the roster.

A sharp decrease in minutes wasn't kind to Gomes as he lost interest in playing basketball at a high level. At least that's what it looked like as he struggled from the field and was way too careless with the ball early in the season.

Gomes would do well to return to the Boston Celtics, the team with which he played for the first two seasons of his career. Without Ray Allen knocking down jumpers, the C's could use a midrange and corner three shooter like Gomes off the bench, even though they've already signed Jason Terry.

Best Landing Spot: Boston Celtics

Darko Milicic

5 of 5

Last Team: Minnesota Timberwolves

Position: C

Age: 27

2011-2012 Per-Game Stats: 4.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, 0.9 assists

Darko Milicic's legacy as one of the biggest draft busts in NBA history just continues to grow now that he's been amnestied by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

For the record, Darko is statistically the ninth-biggest draft bust since the 1982 NBA draft from a statistical standpoint. Michael Olowokandi, Len Bias (whose name unfortunately has to appear as he never played in the NBA and was picked at No. 2 in 1986), Adam Morrison, Jay Williams, Chris Washburn, Nikoloz Tskitishvili, Lancaster Gordon, Greg Oden, Darko and Bobby Hurley comprise the top 10, in that order.

When he's motivated, Darko's defense is top-notch. However, his focus is sometimes lacking.

Whenever he's on the court, Darko is a great shot-blocker and should be a valuable reserve big for any contender. You can't teach size and Darko still has a lot of it.

ESPN's Nick Friedell reports that the Chicago Bulls have interest in the center, while the Sun Sentinel's Ira Winderman reports that the Miami Heat are looking to add one more member of the 2003 draft class to their squad.

A true center on the defending champions would make them even more dangerous.
