Deron Williams Lakers: Star PG Would Instantly Make LA Title Contenders Again

Alex KayJun 7, 2018

Deron Williams is going to become a free agent this summer, when he declines his option for the 2012-13 season with the Brooklyn Nets.

If he wants to win a championship in a big market, he must forget about renegotiating with his current team and look no further than the Los Angeles Lakers.

According to Sam Amick of Sports Illustrated, D-Will and the franchise have some mutual interest, although the Lakers will have to go through some hoops to acquire the prized PG.

A source close to the three-time All-Star said he would be interested in joining the Lakers, though it would have to be via a sign-and-trade deal. (Lakers point guard Ramon Sessions, who was acquired from Cleveland at the trade deadline, has a $4.5 million player option for next season.)

"

LA struggled mightily this season with production from the point, using Derek Fisher, Steve Blake and Darius Morris to start the season. They then cut Fisher after acquiring Ramon Sessions at the trade deadline, in an attempt to resuscitate the position.

It obviously didn’t work, as the Lakers were absolutely manhandled by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the postseason, getting torched by Russell Westbrook on a nightly basis and losing in five games.

Williams, a 6’3”, 210-pound guard, has the ability to actually play defense and create his own shot.

He’s also one of the most dynamic playmakers in the league right now and a perfect fit on the roster. D-Will would help keep Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum happy and involved. Pau Gasol would likely be part of the sign-and-trade to make this happen.

With those three on the floor and any halfway-decent forwards, the sky would be the limit for the Lakers.

While Williams has stated his desire is to return to the Nets for their journey to Brooklyn, he can also achieve greatness by traveling west to Los Angeles.
