Timberwolves vs. Thunder: Kevin Love's 51 Can't Save Minnesota in Wild Game

May 31, 2018

Kevin Love scored 51 points on Friday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder—a new career-high and a Minnesota Timberwolves franchise record.

The Timberwolves needed him to score 60 points. Despite Love's career day, the 'Wolves fell to the Thunder in double-overtime by the final of 149-140.

Love wasn't the only one putting up gaudy numbers in this game (he also added 14 rebounds). Kevin Durant scored 40 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. Russell Westbrook scored 45 points. J.J. Barea had a triple-double with 25 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists.

Shoot, even the Thunder's water boy knocked down a couple of shots, I think.

It's a true shame the 'Wolves lost, as all anybody wanted to do throughout the course of the game was talk about Love. Twitter caught on to what Love was doing right around the time he hit 40 points in the fourth quarter, and the Twitterverse as we know it nearly exploded when Love hit a game-tying three-pointer with a second left in the fourth.

That three came on the heels of a huge three by Durant seconds earlier. Durant would repay the favor at the end of the first overtime, knocking down a three with mere seconds left to tie the game at 129-129.

The second overtime belonged to the Thunder. They put the clamps on Love, and Durant, Westbrook and James Harden (25 points) all combined forces to put the game out of reach.

So it goes for Love and the 'Wolves. He's a great player, and they might be a great team someday. But nowadays, against a team like the Thunder—well, you saw what happened.

There's still hope for the 'Wolves. They're three games under .500 at 23-26, but they still have a shot at earning the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference playoffs if they get hot enough.

If they do, guess who they'd play in the first round.

Yup, the Thunder. Anybody want to object to the idea of seeing more of what we observed Friday night?

[Crickets].

I didn't think so.
