2011 NFL Free Agency: Ranking Each Team's Chance of Landing Terrell Owens
Terrell Owens is once again on the free agent market, and even though free agency is not yet open due to the lockout, pretty soon it’s going to be time to bring out the popcorn!
Sure, Owens is known more for his shenanigans and off the field endeavors nowadays than he is for his abilities, but the fact remains that he is still a good wide receiver and can make a huge impact on the right team.
Here is a ranking of all 32 teams based on their chances of landing Terrell Owens:
32. San Francisco 49ers
1 of 32
I think that it would be a fair assumption to say that Terrell Owens wore out his welcome in San Francisco years ago.
Not much else to say here.
31. Philadelphia Eagles
2 of 32
The Eagles and coach, Andy Reid, have put themselves in the line of fire by going with Michael Vick at quarterback.
Even though Donovan McNabb is long gone I don’t see this signing making many people happy in the city of brotherly love.
30. Dallas Cowboys
3 of 32
Jerry Jones has been known to make a brash move or two during his tenure in the Big D, but even this one might just be too brash.
Dallas has enough on their hands with Dez Bryant.
29. Buffalo Bills
4 of 32
This is another stop on the T.O train that I don’t see him going back to.
Even though he got a key to the city I have a feeling that he wont be visiting anytime soon.
28. Cincinnati Bengals
5 of 32
Being the Batman to OchoCinco's Robin really backfired on the pair, and considering that they had more success on their reality TV show than on the field I can all but guarantee you the good ole’ days in the “natti” are done.
27. Carolina Panthers
6 of 32
I think the Panthers would do almost anything to get Owens on their team.
Steve Smith is merely just a memory of who he was at this point, and they are going to have to find someone for their quarterback to throw too.
If they draft Cam Newton or Blaine Gabbert then they might have a chance of lobbying for Owens, but in my opinion he is going to want to stay out of the doldrums.
26. Houston Texans
7 of 32
Owens came out earlier this week and all but said that he will not sign with any team in the AFC South
So, even though an Owens-Andre Johnson combination might sound pretty epic, it is all but impossible.
25. Jacksonville Jaguars
8 of 32
Owens apparent lockout of the AFC South really hinders Jacksonville’s chances here.
I wouldn’t hold your breath Florida…
24. Tennessee Titans
9 of 32
If the Titans didn’t learn from their experiment with Randy Moss then I could see them taking a stab at Owens.
The only problem is he will have nothing to do with it.
23. New England Patriots
10 of 32
If New England didn’t want Randy Moss they are definitely not going to want Terrell Owens.
Honestly, I could break it down further than that but there really is no need to.
New England is a tight run organization that wont put up with Owen’s shenanigans.
22. Green Bay Packers
11 of 32
Even though the Packers might start looking to replenish their depth at wide receiver I am all but certain that Owens is not what they have in mind.
The Packers are still a very young team and they are primed to make another run at the Super Bowl.
They don’t need any potential distractions and I think they will address wide receiver in the draft.
21. Minnesota Vikings
12 of 32
The problem with this scenario is that at this point Owens would have no idea who would be throwing him the ball.
Chances are the Vikings won’t have a big name behind center. We’ve seen Owens attack some of the biggest names in football, so what makes you think he won’t go after the little guy?
20. Indianapolis Colts
13 of 32
The Colts have a very small window left where they can utilize the skills of Peyton Manning so adding a guy like Terrell Owens to the roster could be a risk well worth the reward.
The problem with this though is that I don’t see him working well with the organization, and it doesn’t seem like the Colts style to take that risk.
19. Washington Redskins
14 of 32
I think Washington has their hands full with the whole Albert Haynesworth and Donovan McNabb situation, so adding Owens to the mix is going to be the last thing they want to do.
He would be an attractive option to add to their offense, but not to the locker room
18. New York Jets
15 of 32
Giving Sanchez one more big name to throw too would really work out nicely for the guys in green.
Rex Ryan would be the perfect coach to deal with T.O and he would fit in beautifully under the bright lights of New York City.
Can the Jets pay the price though, and how would Owens fit in the system?
It’s certainly intriguing.
17. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
16 of 32
To me the Bucs are one of the more interesting places that Owens could land up at. They have a young and talented team that barely got edged out of the playoffs.
They only need a few more pieces to be seen as serious contenders and Owens could be a huge spark to that offense and a big target for Josh Freeman.
16. Pittsburgh Steelers
17 of 32
Pittsburgh really suffered because of their lack of depth at the wide receiver position in the Super Bowl, and I could make the case that it is the reason that they lost.
Mike Wallace is the only deep threat they have and Hines Ward is all but finished and could be preoccupied dancing with the stars.
Owens would be a huge addition.
15. Detroit Lions
18 of 32
If I were Detroit I would give Owens a look or two, but addressing their needs in the later round of the draft could be a smarter move.
That being said, Calvin Johnson and Nate Burleson are really getting log jammed due to the lack of depth at wide receiver, so adding Owens would open the field up tremendously for those two, specifically Johnson.
14. Cleveland Browns
19 of 32
I can see Owens signing with Cleveland purely because of the fact that they rival the Bengals in Ohio.
Colt McCoy is a great young quarterback that could really benefit from an experienced receiver like Owens.
The question becomes whether or not Owens can be a good influence.
13. Kansas City Chiefs
20 of 32
Kansas City is going to be making to look a big push in the AFC West and for all intents and purposes it is up for grabs.
There is not one team that I could confidently put above the rest, but the addition to Owens to any of them would be huge.
Matt Cassel might not be up to Owens standards though which could present a problem, but if he sucked up his pride they could be a good fit together.
12. Denver Broncos
21 of 32
The Broncos need a big time receiver because they quarterback play is anything but big time.
Be it Tim Tebow or Kyle Orton, neither of the two have enough NFL “star power” to lead this team to the playoffs in my eyes, so Owens would be the perfect guy for the situation.
Owens would make either quarterback look a whole lot better.
11. New York Giants
22 of 32
Owens would be a great compliment to the Giants offense, and once again I think he would love the big lights of New York.
Hakeem Nix has the potential to be one of the best receivers in the league, but defenses have the luxury of honing in on him.
Owens could work his magic opposite of Nix.
10. New Orleans Saints
23 of 32
New Orleans really suffered from the dreaded “Super Bowl Hang Over” and their explosive offense looked like a shadow of what it was during the year they won it all.
The team is still as explosive as they come though, and anytime you have Drew Brees under center things could get interesting with a talent like Owens on his side.
9. Atlanta Falcons
24 of 32
The prospect of adding T.O to this team seems like it could be a recipe for success
Putting another great wide receiver opposite of Roddy White would really open things up for Atlanta’s offense and it would give Matt Ryan another dangerous weapon to throw too.
Atlanta could definitely use a possession receiver like Owens, and he could be the guy who puts them over the top
Matt Ryan could really use another top notch receiver.
8. Baltimore Ravens
25 of 32
Baltimore took a big step in the improvement of their offense with the addition of Anquan Boldin, but he still wasn’t enough to get the Ravens over the hump.
There were times when Boldin disappeared and I think the lack of help around him could be the cause.
Terrell Owens would fit in well with Baltimore.
7. Chicago Bears
26 of 32
Jay Cutler has next to nobody to throw to right now and in my opinion that was a huge reason why he spent a lot of his time on the ground last season.
Owens would be an instant deep threat for a team that really suffered in the long ball game, and he would also benefit the running game and play action pass.
Owens would be a perfect fit for Chicago. I’m just not sure of Chicago would be a good fit for his likings.
6. Arizona Cardinals
27 of 32
Larry Fitzgerald has been lobbying for some help on the offense, so the addition of Owens would keep him happy for the time being and would definitely give the fans a reason to come out.
The Cardinals have bigger problems though, and that’s who exactly is going to be throwing to these great wide receivers?
If they figure that out and add Owens to the mix we could see resurgence in the desert.
5. San Diego Chargers
28 of 32
The Chargers are another one of those teams on this list that has one great or above average wide receiver that is suffering because defenses can key in on him.
In this case Antonio Gates is also feeling the lack of a vertical presence on this team, and it is a shame considering the talent that they have at quarterback.
Owens would love the weather down in southern California and could also be a huge component in an offense and city that desperately needs him.
4. Oakland Raiders
29 of 32
When in doubt go to Oakland!
The Raiders never ever have a problem taking a risk when it comes to players and Owens might actually fit well on the other side of the bay.
Oakland is a young team that is a dark horse for the playoffs in my eyes.
In the weak division they are in just one player can make the difference, and Owens could be the guy!
3. Seattle Seahawks
30 of 32
Seattle made a surprising push into the playoffs to knock off the former defending champs in shocking fashion.
I’m not sure how much longer the Seahawks are going to ride Matt Hasselbeck but in my opinion he has one more good year in him.
Might as well go all out and put as many options as you can around him.
Mike Williams stepped out of obscurity to resurrect his career, but he’s going to need somebody on the other side of him now that teams will be legitimately game planning against him.
2. St. Louis Rams
31 of 32
One would assume that St. Louis is going to address the big time wide receiver position in this years draft, but putting a young guy out on an island week after week could prove to be a bad idea.
Terrell Owens would be a huge addition to the Rams offense and in my opinion he would make them the favorites in the NFC West.
Owens would take lots of pressure off of this presumed young wide receiver, and he would be a great safety net for Sam Bradford.
He would also benefit from playing indoors for a good chunk of the season.
Could be a win-win situation
1. Miami Dolphins
32 of 32
“This season I will be taking my talents to south beach.”
That is my mock Terrell Owens decision press conference, but I really do see this as a strong possibility.
Think about it for a second though and it could make sense.
Owens has a thing for the spotlight and definitely has a knack for night life.
He would have the opportunity to go down to Miami and add his presence to the star studded athletic landscape.
As far as football is concerned Brandon Marshall is really the only threat the Dolphins have in the air, and no matter who the quarterback is they will struggle getting him the ball in one-on-one situations.
Owens could really stretch out the field for the Dolphins and he would even probably prove useful in the Wildcat offense.
