NFL Power Rankings: Latest Week 2 Outlook and 2014-15 Super Bowl Odds

R. Cory SmithSep 8, 2014

In the words of Maximus in Gladiator, "Are you not entertained?"

After a wild Week 1 in the NFL, much of the landscape has completely shifted. Among the massive upsets, surprising blowouts and nail-biting overtime matchups, nearly every team in the league is either 1-0 or 0-1—with four teams matching up on Monday Night Football.

Teams expected to contend such as the Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys were flattened. Meanwhile, the Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins got the season started with huge wins over divisional opponents.

Before the final two Week 1 matchups take place, here's a look at the latest Super Bowl odds and power rankings for the entire NFL.

*Odds via Oddsshark.com on Sept. 8, 2014 at 2 p.m. ET.

32.  Oakland Raiders (250-1)

It wasn't a blowout loss for the Oakland Raiders, but a 19-14 loss to the New York Jets certainly didn't help matters for this team. Derek Carr looked good in his debut, going 20-of-32 with 151 passing yards and two touchdowns, but needs help to compete in the AFC West.

31. Washington Redskins (52-1)

New season, same old Washington Redskins. Following an abysmal 2013 season, the team was crushed by J.J. Watt and the Houston Texans. Washington is in an NFC East division that was shaky on Sunday, but it won't compete if it can't figure out the offensive woes.

30. St. Louis Rams (50-1)

A defense that came into the season with plenty of hype was blistered by the Minnesota Vikings for 34 points. Shaun Hill was replaced by backup Austin Davis after a thigh injury, per Lindsay H. Jones of USA Today, with neither able to muster up a single touchdown.

That's enough to raise more than a few red flags for the St. Louis Rams and drop them down near the bottom of the totem pole. In a loaded NFC West division, things might only get worse for the Rams.

29. Dallas Cowboys (60-1)

How bad were the Cowboys and Tony Romo on Sunday? Let's just say the final score of 28-17 was nowhere near as horrid as it looked for the atrocious team.

The San Francisco 49ers jumped on top early with a 21-3 lead over the Cowboys in the first quarter and were on cruise control after a 28-3 lead heading into the half. As for Romo, ESPN Stats & Info notes just how bad it was for the franchise quarterback:

Rather than the focus being on the decimated defense—which wasn't entirely to blame for the final score—it was squarely on Romo's struggles. If both sides continue to scuffle against the Tennessee Titans in Week 2, this could be an even longer season than expected in Big D.

28. Kansas City Chiefs (44-1)

As if a 26-10 dismantling at the hands of the Titans weren't enough, the Chiefs were also destroyed by injuries. With both Derrick Johnson and Mike DeVito going down with a ruptured Achilles tendon, per The Associated Press (via The Washington Post), even Jamaal Charles might not be able to save this team.

27. Jacksonville Jaguars (300-1)

The first quarter went as well as the Jacksonville Jaguars could have hoped. The second half went about as poorly as they could have imagined. With a Week 2 matchup against Washington, Jacksonville has a chance to move to 1-1 or drop further down in the power rankings.

26. Tennessee Titans (200-1)

A huge win over the disappointing Chiefs proved the Titans offense might be better than expected. But a game against the Cowboys might actually prove where this team stands and how well the defense can hold up.

25. Cleveland Browns (90-1)

Just when it looked like the cries for Johnny Manziel might be on the horizon, Brian Hoyer proved his worth in the second half. Though the Cleveland Browns came up short, Hoyer nearly knocked off the division-rival Pittsburgh Steelers and looked the part of the No. 1 signal-caller.

Chris Chase of USA Today offered his take on the quarterback battle after the 30-27 loss for Cleveland:

"

Johnny Bench will get his shot one day, but that day isn’t in the near future. It’s hard to imagine a situation that gets Manziel in a game over the next few weeks, aside from some possible use as a change-of-pace QB. Unless Hoyer gets injured or the Browns fall out of the playoff race, Manziel will stay where he was in Week 1: standing on the sideline watching a better quarterback lead the team.

"

After going 19-of-31 for 230 yards and a touchdown, Hoyer more than led his team against a tough defense. While he doesn't provide the dual-threat ability of Manziel, his patience shined through and will be needed against the New Orleans Saints in Week 2.

24. Buffalo Bills (37-1)

For those who saw the Buffalo Bills taking down the Chicago Bears in Week 1, give yourself a round of applause. Equipped with a stout defense, talented receiving corps and stable EJ Manuel, the Bills might have more upsets coming up.

23. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (75-1)

Despite spending the entire offseason building both sides of the ball, neither was noticeably better against a Derek Anderson-led Carolina Panthers team. With time to lick its wounds, this young team has a chance to bounce back against the Rams this weekend.

22. Minnesota Vikings (110-1)

Maybe this is a bit of an overreaction, but the Minnesota Vikings looked outstanding against a St. Louis defense that was expected to contend in the NFC West. That came without Adrian Peterson going over 100 yards during the entire game.

Also, Cordarrelle Patterson is the real deal after posting a total of 128 yards and a touchdown on six touches. Expect that to change in Week 2 when they take on an angry Patriots team looking to move to 1-1.

21. New York Giants (40-1)

Though they haven't played yet, it's hard to move the New York Giants up in the rankings without seeing the team hit the field. Going up against a tough Detroit Lions team, a victory would say a lot about where this franchise is heading.

20. Houston Texans (60-1)

Not only do the Houston Texans finally have a win, but they have yet another favorable matchup in Week 2 against the hapless Raiders. Watt was brilliant, and DeAndre Hopkins looked explosive, but the team still dealt with a huge blow.

After starting off the season with promise, Jadeveon Clowney left the field due to a meniscus injury. The injury could cause the rookie to miss several weeks, as John McClain of The Houston Chronicle notes:

In a division where the Indianapolis Colts look like the only team with playoff potential, the Texans have a chance to contend. And with games against the Raiders, Bills and Cowboys before meeting the Colts on Oct. 9, the Texans might be a team to watch this season.

19. New York Jets (75-1)

A win is a win, and the Jets got just that in Week 1 against the Raiders at home. Geno Smith wasn't perfect, but going 23-of-28 for 221 yards, one touchdown and one interception, he proved he is the unquestioned leader for the team.

With a true test against the Green Bay Packers in Week 2, fans will see who the true Jets are on Sunday.

18. Miami Dolphins (60-1)

Savor this moment, AFC East fans. After Week 1, the New England Patriots are the only team in the division without a win. That loss came courtesy of the Miami Dolphins, who proved they are ready to compete for a spot in the postseason.

One of the biggest revelations for the Dolphins was an offensive line that looked much more dominant after giving up 58 sacks in 2013. Jeff Darlington of NFL.com provides a look at an exchange between Ryan Tannehill and Branden Albert:

If Tannehill can remain clean throughout the season, the Dolphins offense can continue it's success after Week 1. Oh, and Miami has a chance to take over the top spot or at least tie for the division lead in Week 2—against the Bills. That's the NFL world we live in right now.

17. Chicago Bears (38-1)

A deflating loss to the Bills in overtime is one thing, but Jay Cutler's instability with an elite receiving corps raises even more flags. With two prime-time games coming up against the Niners and Jets before facing the Packers, the Bears have no room for error moving forward.

16. Detroit Lions (50-1)

Before facing the Giants on Monday Night Football, the Lions remain near the middle of the pack. But thanks to an explosive receiving corps and a gritty defense, Detroit has a chance to make a playoff push this season.

After New York, Detroit travels to Carolina and hosts Green Bay. Needless to say, winning in Week 1 might be a necessity if the Lions want to start with a winning record through the first three weeks.

15. Baltimore Ravens (37-1)

Though they were able to rally back to a respectable loss, the Baltimore Ravens never looked the part of a top team against the Cincinnati Bengals. With nearly an entire season remaining, Joe Flacco and Co. can heal some of those wounds with a win on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

14. Atlanta Falcons (38-1)

Any questions about whether the Atlanta Falcons were for real were answered on Sunday with a 37-34 overtime victory against the New Orleans Saints.

Matt Ryan was brilliant on Sunday and had a healthy receiving corps to thank for his final stat line of 31-of-43 with 448 yards and three touchdowns. With Julio Jones and Roddy White healthy, Ryan has a chance to have the best season of his career, as Chris Wesseling of NFL.com notes:

"

If he stays healthy, Ryan is a strong bet for his first career 5,000-yard season. The Falcons' defense is weak enough that the offense will be involved in shootouts. Julio Jones and Roddy White look fantastic after injuries ravaged their 2013 seasons. Devin Hester had a major impact, with five catches and 99 yards -- two yards shy of his career high. Atlanta is going to run a lot of four-wide receiver sets.

"

Behind the arm of Ryan and two field goals of over 50 yards to send the game into overtime and win it by Matt Bryant, the Falcons shocked the NFL. With a Week 2 matchup on the road against the Cincinnati Bengals, an even bigger statement can be made.

13. Arizona Cardinals (42-1)

Yet another team awaiting its first game of the year, the Arizona Cardinals are here based on last year and their offseason. If the defense can prove itself against the San Diego Chargers, the Cards might be competitive again in the difficult NFC West.

12. Pittsburgh Steelers (37-1)

After doing nearly everything they could to give away a win to the Browns, the Steelers found a way to pull out a nail-biter over their rival. Based on the first half, this team has a chance to make a postseason push.

But with a short week before facing the Ravens followed by a prime-time matchup in Carolina, the road ahead looks tough for Pittsburgh. Being 1-0 is one thing, but the next two games will be more telling for the Steelers.

11. San Diego Chargers (45-1)

Much like the Cardinals, a victory on Monday Night Football is crucial for the remainder of the season. A matchup with the Seahawks looms, so taking down one NFC West opponent would be massive for Philip Rivers and the Chargers as a whole.

10. Carolina Panthers (44-1)

No Cam Newton, no problem for the Panthers against the Bucs. But Carolina fans won't have to wait much longer for Newton's return as he's projected to start against the Lions in Week 2.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera spoke about whether Newton will be on the field against Detroit, per Jonathan Jones of The Charlotte Observer:

Anderson carved his way through a retooled defense that was expected to compete with the Panthers on the road. If Newton can find similar success and the defense can remain dominant, Carolina has a shot to repeat as NFC South champions.

9. Cincinnati Bengals (31-1)

Andy Dalton and A.J. Green were doing their thing against the Ravens and helped stave off a late comeback in the fourth quarter. But after ending a four-game losing streak to Baltimore, Cincy needs a similar performance with Atlanta coming to town.

8. Indianapolis Colts (23-1)

Despite an effort at a late comeback, the Colts were unable to go 2-0 against Peyton Manning and have another tough prime-time game against the Eagles. But in a weak division, Indy will still be a playoff team when January rolls around.

7. New Orleans Saints (16-1)

Bryant and Ryan will cause nightmares in New Orleans for a while after the Week 1 loss, but the Saints have a chance to recover. Matchups against the Browns and Vikings await before a Sunday Night Football game in Dallas.

But in a division where every win counts, the Saints can't afford to slip too far behind either the Panthers or Falcons. And with a relative unknown in the Bucs still looming as a potential contender, this should be one of the best groups in the league by the end of the season.

6. Green Bay Packers (13-1)

If any team gets a mulligan, it's a franchise that goes into Seattle on opening night after they won the Super Bowl. Needless to say, the 12th man was pumped and helped lead the Seahawks to a 36-16 drubbing of the Packers.

While the Packers remain a contender in the NFC, one glaring issue is the offensive line. After Aaron Rodgers was sacked three times by the Seahawks on Thursday night, Pat Kirwan of CBS Sports notes the recent numbers:

For an offense that has a chance to be one of the best in the NFL, Green Bay needs an improved line and healthy Eddie Lacy to make it work. After Lacy's concussion, coach Mike McCarthy said he has cleared the first step of concussion protocol, per the Packers.

Heading back to Lambeau Field to take on the Jets, the team has another chance to prove itself. If Lacy is healthy and the line improves, the Packers are still a Super Bowl contender.

5. Philadelphia Eagles (27-1)

It wasn't the best of starts for the Eagles, but the second half led to a 34-17 victory over the Jaguars. That came after trailing 17-0 after the first half, with Nick Foles turning the ball over three times before heading to the locker room.

After surviving a potential train wreck against the Jags, Philly takes on an Indy team coming off a huge loss to the Denver Broncos. Depending on which Foles shows up, this Week 2 matchup could go in two very different directions on Monday night.

4. New England Patriots (9-1)

Week 1 was a forgettable one for the Patriots, but it is far from a great predictor of what's to come. New England's offense came out flat in the second half, and the defense surrendered 23 unanswered points in a 13-point loss to Miami.

But even with the shocking upset, Ross Tucker of NBC Sports provides a cautionary tale for those down on the Patriots:

Much like the Packers, it was just one week of football. The Pats get a chance to rebound against the Vikings and Raiders—yawn—before a ravaged Chiefs team, so the woes should be forgotten in Week 5 against the Bengals.

3. San Francisco 49ers (7-1)

Beating up on a defenseless Cowboys team simply shows the 49ers are exactly who we thought they were. Tougher matchups with the Bears, Cardinals and Eagles in the coming weeks might give us a better glimpse of where San Francisco stands during the 2014 season.

2. Denver Broncos (32-5)

After ending the 2013 season with a blowout loss to the Seahawks, the Broncos remain behind them after Week 1. Denver was able to escape the opening weekend with a win against the Colts after holding off a late comeback.

With the second-most difficult strength of schedule in the NFL, it won't be an easy road ahead for Denver. Equipped with weapons like Julius Thomas and Demaryius Thomas, Manning will still lead the team to another playoff run and potentially head in as the top team in the AFC.

1. Seattle Seahawks (21-4)

Taking down a playoff contender in Week 1 will earn any team respect. Blowing out said team by 20 points on national TV during the season opener, well, that makes a statement that the Seahawks are here to stay.

Marshawn Lynch entered Beast Mode again, and the defense swarmed a prolific offense that had weapons all over the field. With the defending champions heading to San Diego before hosting Denver, they'll have plenty of other opportunities to stake their claim as the NFL's best.
