Fantasy Football Rankings: Week 3 Big Board
The injuries have already begun to pile up just two weeks into the season, which means these rankings will be very fluid throughout the week. I’ve tried to get a good handle on everything and incorporate all the latest news, but these rankings will be changing as more information comes out from practice reports.
Other than the losses of players like Tony Romo, Dez Bryant and Austin Seferian-Jenkins, major shifts in rankings may come with more information on Drew Brees and his shoulder injury. I’ve decided to rank the Saints as if Brees won’t play on Sunday against the Panthers based on what we know up until this point. Obviously, things would change dramatically across the board if it’s Brees under center and not backup Luke McCown.
In addition to the Brees injury, we’ll have to wait on more news about Eddie Lacy (ankle), Lamar Miller (ankle), Alshon Jeffery (calf/hamstring), Mike Evans (hamstring), Chris Ivory (groin), Todd Gurley (knee), Eric Decker (knee) and likely some other injured players we don’t even know about yet. This is why setting your lineups so early in the week is useless to even think about until we get all the information.
As always, these rankings will be updated throughout the week and right after inactives come down for the early games Sunday.
Top 100: The Tallest Giant
1 of 7
I’ll be breaking down each position with players looking better than usual, worse than usual, players to avoid and sleepers. Before we get into those, here are the teams I like as a whole for fantasy this week because of their matchups:
Seattle Seahawks (vs. Chicago Bears)
Denver Broncos (at Detroit Lions)
San Diego Chargers (at Minnesota Vikings)
Washington Redskins (at New York Giants)
Arizona Cardinals (vs. San Francisco 49ers)

Quarterbacks: Tom on Top
2 of 7
Better Than Usual
- Carson Palmer – Palmer and the Cardinals continue to roll right along without any real concerns and get to face a 49ers defense that couldn’t stop the Steelers last week and has allowed the 11th-most fantasy points to QBs.
- Russell Wilson – I was down on Wilson for the first two weeks, and the Seahawks went 0-2, but they come home to get well against a terrible Bears defense that’s allowed the fifth-most fantasy points to QBs so far.
- Peyton Manning – Last week may not have been pretty, but Manning got it done to open the season 2-0 against two tough defenses. He faces a much easier matchup in Detroit against a Lions defense that’s given up the 12th-most fantasy points to QBs over two games. The Lions are a ship looking for an SOS, and Manning will sink them.
- Others: Cam Newton
Worse Than Usual
- Matthew Stafford – Stafford is obviously playing through pain thanks to injuries to his throwing arm, ribs and chest, and it shows on the field. The Lions are back home this week but face a tough Broncos defense that’s been the toughest unit against QBs so far. Stay away from Stafford if you can.
- Joe Flacco – After an ugly opener against the Broncos, Flacco and the Ravens got their offense on track in Oakland but still came out with a loss. Now, they go back home and face the Bengals. Cincinnati has given up the 28th-fewest fantasy points after facing Derek Carr and Philip Rivers.
Avoid
- Sam Bradford – Things have not gone well for Bradford and the Eagles through two games and it’s hard to see them getting any better against the Jets on Sunday. Only two teams have given up fewer points to QBs in the first two weeks, so this doesn’t look like a good week for Bradford to turn it all around.
Sleeper
- Marcus Mariota – Mariota took a predictable step back in last week’s loss to the Browns, although he managed enough garbage-time production to have a decent fantasy game. The Colts shouldn’t give him as much trouble, especially with all their injuries in the secondary, so he’s worth a shot if you’re streaming QBs.
- Blake Bortles – Bortles is coming off arguably his best game as a pro heading into his biggest game as a pro against the Patriots. While New England has blown out their first two opponents, they’ve allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to the QBs along the way. While I’m not expecting the Jaguars to win, they should be throwing a lot to stay in the game, and the volume makes Bortles worth considering as a sleeper.

Running Backs: Back the Beast
3 of 7
Better Than Usual
- Joseph Randle – No team has given up more fantasy points to RBs than the Falcons, and Randle is a lot more important to the offense with the absences of Tony Romo, Dez Bryant and possibly Jason Witten. The Cowboys don’t really have a choice but to rely on their ground game, and the matchup calls for it.
- Dion Lewis – A quick look at the numbers shows that the Jaguars have held RBs to the sixth-fewest fantasy points in the first two games, which might be reason enough to downgrade Lewis and the Patriots RBs. However, they’ve allowed an average of 7.5 receptions to RBs in those two games, so Lewis has a good chance to make up for any lost rushing production through the air.
Worse Than Usual
- Matt Forte – Through two games, the Seahawks have given up the fourth-fewest fantasy points to RBs, which would be reason enough to worry about Forte. With Jimmy Clausen filling in for an injured Jay Cutler, the Bears offense takes an even bigger hit while Seattle will be able to focus on stopping Forte.
- Eddie Lacy – An ankle injury forced Lacy to leave Week 2 and has put his status in question for the team’s Monday night Week 3 matchup against the Chiefs. Relying on Lacy is probably too risky, especially when you factor in how well the Chiefs have handled RBs. In two games, they're giving up the third-fewest points to the position. Expectations have to be lowered, if Lacy is even able to play.
- Lamar Miller – For some odd reason, the Dolphins have not committed to running the football in their first two games, and that’s made Miller a massive fantasy disappointment. He’s rushed just 23 times for 67 yards and is coming out of Week 2 with an ankle injury that could linger into the Week 3 matchup with the Bills. Buffalo has been a top-10 defense against running backs, so the concerns for him will likely continue for yet another week.
- Others: Chris Ivory, DeMarco Murray
Avoid
- C.J. Spiller – Spiller made his debut in Week 2, but played just seven snaps coming off a knee procedure in the preseason. While he should see an increase in playing time in Week 3, the Saints have to figure out what to do with their offense if Drew Brees (shoulder) can’t play. Spiller needs to show he can produce in a bad situation before I’m willing to trust him. Plus, he has a tough matchup against a Panthers defense that’s allowed the seventh-fewest fantasy points to RBs in two games.
- Rashad Jennings – The Redskins have been one of the better defenses in football through the first two weeks and that’s spells trouble for Jennings and the Giants on Thursday night. No team has given up fewer fantasy points to the RB position and Jennings already has enough trouble producing in a three-headed backfield with Shane Vereen and Andre Williams.
Sleepers
- Matt Jones – Jones will have a chance to build on his Week 2 breakout performance just four days after it happened when he faces the Giants in New Jersey on Thursday night. Considering how bad their defense is, especially at the second level, it should be no surprise to see they’ve allowed the seventh-most points to RBs so far. Jones and Alfred Morris should carry the offense once again and will likely do so with a lot of success.
- Isaiah Crowell – Crowell bounced back from a rough Week 1 to run for 72 yards and a touchdown in Week 2. Even though Duke Johnson is very much in the mix, Crowell looks like the lead back for Cleveland, and he’ll have an opportunity to do some major damage against the Raiders in Week 3. No matter who starts for the Browns at QB, they have to run the ball, which won’t be a problem since Oakland has given up the second-most fantasy points to RBs.

Wide Receivers: Great 88
4 of 7
Better Than Usual
- Allen Robinson – Robinson proved the preseason hype was for real with six catches, 155 yards and two touchdowns in Week 2. He’ll find himself in a much bigger spotlight against the Patriots in Week 3, but it’s not like the matchup is a hard one. Only two teams have allowed more fantasy points to WRs after the first two games. Jacksonville may not pull off the upset, but it’ll have plenty of chances to test the beatable New England secondary.
- Brandon Marshall – Marshall’s tenure with the Jets has gotten off to a fantastic start, highlighted by a Week 2 performance featuring seven catches, 101 yards and a touchdown. Eric Decker’s knee may keep him out for Week 3, which puts Marshall in line for even more targets against an Eagles defense that’s given up the seventh-most fantasy points to WRs in the first two weeks.
Worse Than Usual
- Calvin Johnson – It’s hard to downgrade Johnson too much following a Week 2 game with 10 receptions, 83 yards and a touchdown, but it’s important to look ahead to a much tougher matchup against the Broncos in Week 3. Denver has given up the fewest points to WRs so far and will make life difficult for quarterback Matthew Stafford, who may have to play through multiple injuries.
- Alshon Jeffery – Speaking of injuries, Jeffery was forced to sit out Week 2 after playing through a calf injury in Week 1 that also led to a hamstring injury. Even if Jeffery is able to play, the Bears are rolling with Jimmy Clausen in place of an injured Jay Cutler and are doing so in Seattle. Expectations should be very low for Jeffery if he’s able to play.
- Terrance Williams – Williams’ stock was on the rise following the foot injury to Dez Bryant in Week 2, but he’ll likely come crashing back to Earth with Brandon Weeden taking over for Tony Romo in Week 3. With Romo out thanks to a broken clavicle, Williams takes on the Falcons, and they’ve been solid against WRs in the first two weeks. Weeden is the biggest buzzkill if you thought you had a legit WR2 in Williams.
Avoid
- Brandon Coleman/Marques Colston – The Saints didn’t look very good at home last week with Drew Brees under center, so it’s hard to feel good about their offense's chances if Brees is out and Luke McCown has to step in. The Panthers have been a top-10 defense against WRs, so even if Brees does go, this isn’t a good week to consider Coleman or Colston.
Sleepers
- Michael Crabtree – With the Raiders facing the Browns in Week 3, rookie WR Amari Cooper will likely draw top cornerback Joe Haden, so Crabtree won't get a tough matchup, and that could afford him more targets. He’s already been very busy in his first two games, with 14 receptions for 148 yards and a touchdown, so you have to think that will continue against a Browns defense that’s allowed the eighth-most fantasy points to WRs.
- Rishard Matthews – Others may still be sleeping on Matthews, but the Dolphins aren’t, and you shouldn’t be, either. He had six catches for 115 yards in Week 2 and faces a Buffalo defense that’s allowed the sixth-most fantasy points to WRs in the first two weeks. It’s only a small sample size, but all indications are that this is much more than a fluke by Matthews.

Tight Ends: Stick with What Works
5 of 7
Better Than Usual
- Ladarius Green – Green has been solid thus far filling in for the suspended Antonio Gates and is facing a Minnesota defense that’s giving up 11th-most fantasy points to TEs so far. Keenan Allen has been up and down, and the team needs a consistent threat in its passing game, so Green gets another great chance to prove his worth before Gates comes back.
Worse Than Usual
- Jason Witten – Witten was already downgraded when the Cowboys lost Tony Romo to a broken clavicle, but it turns out Witten is also hurt and may not even play in Week 3. According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, Witten sprained both of his ankles and has a sprained knee. You should probably plan for life without him in Week 3, but if he does gut it out, the downgrade in quarterback to Brandon Weeden serves as another big blow to Witten’s fantasy value against the Falcons.
Avoid
- Larry Donnell – Hopefully, you got off the Donnell bandwagon by the end of last year, but if you’re still holding out hope for a resurgence after he scored last week, just stop right now. The Redskins defense has shown great improvement in the first two games, and I don’t trust anyone in the Giants receiving corps outside of Odell Beckham Jr., and you shouldn’t either. Forget Donnell.
Sleeper
- Heath Miller – Miller has been a productive fantasy TE in each of the first two games and should have a chance to keep that going against the Rams in Week 3. With WR Martavis Bryant still out another two games, the Steelers need a reliable option in the passing game other than WR Antonio Brown. Miller can provide that against a defense giving up with 12th-most fantasy points to tight ends.

Defense/Special Teams: Orange Crush
6 of 7
Best Options Based on Matchups
- Seattle Seahawks – This is pretty much a no-brainer. Seattle gets its first home game of the year after starting the season 0-2, and it comes against a Bears offense that will start Jimmy Clausen thanks to the hamstring injury suffered by Jay Cutler in Week 2. Chicago is giving up the 12th-most fantasy points to defenses in the first two weeks, but I have a feeling that number goes up after playing the Seahawks.
- Denver Broncos – In the first two weeks, the Lions have faced mediocre defenses in the Chargers and Vikings, yet they still need their first win. I’m not expecting it to come against a Broncos defense that’s been the top unit for fantasy through two games. Matthew Stafford is one injury away from being listed on the practice report with “overall body soreness.” Denver will make life very difficult for Stafford and company.
- Houston Texans – Just the thought of rookie QB Jameis Winston trying to lead the Buccaneers against J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney seems so unfair—and it likely will be, especially without Austin Seferian-Jenkins, who's out with a shoulder injury. Look for the Texans to feast on the Winston and the Buccaneers this weekend.
- New York Jets – Only the Broncos defense has scored more fantasy points than the Jets defense. New York gets to head down the New Jersey Turnpike to face the Eagles. That’s the last thing Chip Kelly needs after his offense was embarrassed in every single way in Week 2. If Kelly’s offense was operating at a higher level, you might stay away from the Jets, but after what we saw last week, there are no concerns in using the Jets.

Kickers: Seattle's Best
7 of 7
Best Options Widely Available on the Waiver Wire
- Brandon McManus – For some reason, McManus is still not owned in every league despite scoring the second-most fantasy points, but this was probably your last week to scoop him up. He’s hit all five of his field-goal attempts and all of his extra points so far. Plus, he has the added bonus of kicking in the distance friendly confines of Denver. He’ll be in Detroit this week, but he should have more opportunities to produce for fantasy.
- Josh Brown – Very quietly, Brown has racked up the third-most fantasy points in the first two weeks and gets a jump on just about everyone with a Week 3 matchup against the Redskins on Thursday night. Washington’s defense has been good enough to stall the Dolphins and Rams offenses so far, but hopefully Brown gets enough chances in field-goal range to continue his strong start.
