NFL Power Rankings: The Top Teams in Each Conference

John RozumNov 14, 2011

As the weeks continue to fly by, it's intriguing to see which NFL teams are legit and which are not. The difference lies within each respective conference, where the NFC has clearly been more consistent.

In any event, here are the current top-two teams in each conference through Week 10 (regardless of what happens on Monday night).

Even if the Packers somehow fall to the Minnesota Vikings at home on Monday (which is highly unlikely), Green Bay will still be atop the NFC, they'll just have some company from a playoff rival (spoiler alert). That said, the Packers do have a big weakness in pass defense but still continue to win.

As scary as that is for opponents, the more impressive factor here—with flaws in mind—is that Green Bay has a perfect record despite still not having yet played perfect football from an all-encompassed perspective.

Their defense has been improving (just at the slightest margin), but they will figure it out before the postseason. Regardless, barring a complete meltdown, expect the cheese to be No. 1 whence January begins.

Speaking of "barring a complete meltdown," remember back in Week 2 when San Fran blew a two-score lead (twice) at home against Dallas and ultimately lost in overtime? Well, either that was the catalyst that sparked the Bay Area, or it was just a flop that happened to go another way.

Nonetheless, that game is what's preventing the 49ers from being undefeated right now. However, it's not like new head coach Jim Harbaugh has anything to complain about. The 49ers have run off seven straight since then and have one of the best defenses in football.

And with five divisional games remaining, we have to anticipate San Fran finishing at least 13-3. Which is quite an impressive turnaround, as they were 6-10 just one season ago.

AFC

The Houston Texans are arguably the most dangerous team in the NFL right now. They've been without wide receiver Andre Johnson since Week 5 and also lost linebacker Mario Williams for the year that same week.

However, Houston has ran off four straight wins and is currently 7-3 and tied for the AFC's best record. With a bye in Week 11, don't be surprised if Johnson makes a return to the field in Week 12 (he's been out long enough you think he'd be back by now).

That being said, whether Johnson returns is a moot point. The Texans are great without him and will at least finish 11-5 and make their first postseason appearance in franchise history.

The Steelers may have gotten swept by the Baltimore Ravens, but at least Pittsburgh has played better on a more consistent basis. The only other team to defeat the Steelers was Houston back in Week 4, so it's reasonable to suspect Pittsburgh's legitimacy.

To that end, expect the Steel Curtain to finish around 12-4 as the remaining schedule is rather favorable compared to Baltimore's. Only San Francisco appears to be a team that can best Pittsburgh, as the Cleveland Browns, St. Louis Rams, Kansas City Chiefs, and Cincinnati Bengals are all inferior opponents.

Cincinnati is by far the best of that group; however, their inexperience was exploited by Pittsburgh in Week 10, so expect much of the same in their Week 13 rematch.
