Vikings HC Reacts to 'Violent, Physical Play' That Caused Kyler Murray Injury vs. Packers
The Minnesota Vikings lost their starting quarterback early in Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers after Kyler Murray suffered a concussion caused by a big hit as he was sliding.
Speaking to reporters Monday, Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell called it a "violent, physical play," but added that he doesn't "put any fault on anybody there."
In the first quarter of Murray's first game with the Vikings, he was scrambling and attempted to slide, but took a hit from Packers safety Javon Bullard, who was flagged for unnecessary roughness on the play.
Murray was evaluated for a concussion and later ruled out for the rest of the game. He finished with just 18 passing yards and an interception, completing three of his five passes.
While O'Connell said he didn't place blame on anyone for the play, Vikings right tackle Brian O'Neill, who shoved Bullard afterwards, regretted not standing up for his quarterback more.
"It was so bang, bang," O'Neill told reporters. "You don't want to freak out if you're wrong. I was probably wrong to not freak out more than that. So I kind of wish I took a shot at him."
Murray was listed as day-by-day on Monday, and O'Connell said he was able to participate in team meetings, which is a good sign that he'll at least have a chance to play in Week 2.
After Murray came out of the game, he was replaced by veteran Carson Wentz, who threw for 133 yards and three touchdowns, helping Minnesota score 29 unanswered points to win 39-22.
The Vikings would prefer to get Murray back on the field by Sunday, but Wentz's performance against the Packers showed he can at least hold his own against the Chicago Bears.
