NFL Power Rankings: St. Louis Rams Take over as League's Worst Team

Zachary D. RymerOct 17, 2011

This was supposed to be a good year for the St. Louis Rams. A year after Sam Bradford raised the franchise from the depths, the Rams were supposed to be a contender for the NFC West title. You might even say that Bradford was supposed to raise the entire division from the depths, too.

As many people have already noticed by now, things are not panning out this way. The Rams went into their Week 5 bye at 0-4, and their 24-3 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday bumped them down to 0-5.

Now, it should be noted that losing to the Green Bay Packers is not the worst thing in the world. In fact, it's almost sort of an honor in a weird kind of way, and I guess you have to give the Rams credit for losing by just 21 points.

Nevertheless, I have moved the Rams down to the No. 32 spot in my NFL power rankings for Week 7. It may seem like an odd thing to do seeing as how I just praised the Rams for holding their own against the Packers, but that's kinda the point. The Rams put up a fight and still got dominated.

This is what makes the Rams different from the 0-6 Indianapolis Colts. They may be losers of six games in a row, but they've had a chance to win each of the last four games in which they've played. Had they gotten a couple of lucky bounces here and there, the Colts could be sitting on one, two or maybe even three wins.

The same can even be said of the Miami Dolphins, who are awaiting a Monday night game against the New York Jets. The Dolphins are awful, but they've at least managed to hold their own this season, and against some pretty tough opponents.

The Rams are different. Unless you want to read into their comeback attempt against the Washington Redskins, the Rams really haven't come close to winning a game. That they've played three of their five games at home makes things look even worse.

The irony here is that the Rams are one of the only teams in the league that really has no need for a "Suck4Luck" campaign. They already have a good young quarterback, so drafting Andrew Luck with the No. 1 overall pick is not in the cards.

As such, it looks like this season is going to end up being entirely fruitless.

Hey, at least the Cardinals are in the World Series.
