Nnamdi Asomugha Signs with Eagles: 6 Moves New York Jets Can Make Next
Nnamdi Asomugha signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in a stunning move on Friday evening. The New York Jets and the Dallas Cowboys appeared to be the frontrunners up until the point when the signing was announced by the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Jets are now left picking up the pieces and trying to fill the holes in their team. They need another cornerback, another receiver and some help in the front seven.
They have worked hard over the past few days to free up some cap space, so it now appears that they have the cap room to make a splash in the rest of free agency.
Here are six players who could be playing for the Mean Green next season:
Sign Antonio Cromartie
1 of 6Antonio Cromartie at the top of this list should be no secret to anyone as he played opposite of Darrelle Revis last season.
Cromartie played well for the Jets last season and provides a spark in the special teams for the Jets also.
He is not as good of a cover corner as Asomugha is, but he played very well being left on an island all alone across from Revis.
We won't be naming any islands after Cromartie, but he certainly fits in with what the Jets do on the defensive side of the ball.
Sign Braylon Edwards
2 of 6Braylon Edwards has been much more effective with the New York Jets over the past two seasons than he was with the Cleveland Browns, but he still falls short of his potential.
However, the New York Jets already lost Brad Smith to the Buffalo Bills and need to bring in a lot of receiver help for Mark Sanchez and Santonio Holmes.
Edwards should be a bargain at this point considering the market is very slim for Edwards. At this point the only team showing interest is the Minnesota Vikings, so they should be able to bring him back at a hometown discount.
Edwards clearly wants to return as evidenced by his comment on Twitter, saying he will love Jets Nation no matter what happens.
Trade for Asante Samuel
3 of 6According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Eagles plan to carry all three of their cornerbacks (Asante Samuel, Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie) on the roster for this season. McLane posted this on Twitter following the Eagles' acquisition of Asomugha:
"The #Eagles plan is to carry all three CBs for the season unless they get a good trade offer.
"
If for some reason the Jets are unable to bring Cromartie back to New York, they may have to pony up a good offer for Samuel. They desperately need a corner and the market is getting thin, so they may have to make Philadelphia an offer they can't refuse.
Philadelphia may find themselves adding another second-round pick to their arsenal if the Jets become interested in Samuel.
""
Sign Mike Sims-Walker
4 of 6Mike Sims-Walker could become the backup plan for the New York Jets if they are unable to bring back Braylon Edwards,
Sims-Walker is a big, physical receiver who can help stretch the field for the Jets and would likely head to New York for a reasonable price as he has not gotten a lot of attention so far in free agency.
Sims-Walker has been inconsistent during his career, but for a team that is going to be desperate for receiver help, he makes sense for the Jets.
Edwards remains the primary target for the Jets at receiver, but if he doesn't want to rejoin New York at a reasonable price, Sims-Walker will be just a phone call away.
Sign Cullen Jenkins
5 of 6The New York Jets desperately need to add a pass-rusher this offseason, and Cullen Jenkins certainly fits the bill.
Jenkins did an excellent job of rushing the passer out on the 3-4 defensive end spot in Green Bay and could look to do the same thing in New York.
Jenkins was rumored to have been linked to the Washington Redskins for the larger portion of the offseason, but they signed Stephen Bowen and have not been in contact with the Super Bowl winner.
If Jenkins is looking to win another Super Bowl, New York would be the place for him to go. He would be a solid fit in Rex Ryan's defense and could use his strength to get some pressure on the quarterback in the New Meadowlands.
Sign Carlos Rogers
6 of 6If things don't work out for Antonio Cromartie or Asante Samuel, Carlos Rogers will likely be the next best option.
Rogers has been a solid cover corner for the Washington Redskins but has had butter fingers for the large part of his career.
However, he would be an effective No. 2 corner opposite of Revis and plays a similar press style to Asomugha. Unfortunately, he is not as physical as Cromartie, so he is not the ideal fit for Rex Ryan's defense, but desperate times could call for desperate measures.
Rogers is without a doubt the worst case scenario for the Jets as they would much rather land Cromartie.
