NFL Free Agency 2011: Buy or Sell on Each Team's Moves
The NFL offseason is in full swing, which means we can start breaking down the trades and signings being made and assigning opinions and reaction to the biggest deals.
Which teams have made the 2011 offseason their personal love slave? Which teams have been owned by their competition? And which teams could use a little blue pill to get their offseason game going?
We take a look at each team, deciding if we're buying or selling what it's done thus far.
Arizona Cardinals
1 of 32The Arizona Cardinals have stumbled out of the gate, but that could all change if a trade for Philadelphia quarterback Kevin Kolb goes down within the next few days.
Moves
Traded for QB Kevin Kolb (Philadelphia)
Signed OG Daryn Colledge (Green Bay)
Signed TE Jeff King (Carolina)
Signed OG Daryn Colledge (Green Bay)
Signed LB Stewart Bradley (Philadelphia)
Signed DE Nick Eason (Pittsburgh)
Re-signed C Lyle Sendlein
Re-signed S Hamza Abdullah
Re-signed CB Michael Adams
Re-signed T D'Anthony Batiste
Re-signed C Ben Claxton
Re-signed P Ben Graham
Re-signed FB Reagan Maui'a
Re-signed TE Stephen Spach
Signed CB Richard Marshall (Carolina)
Lost WR Steve Breaston (Kansas City)
Lost CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie via trade (Philadelphia)
Verdict: Sell
The massive trade that sent cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second-round pick to Philadelphia for quarterback Kevin Kolb was a desperate move to fill the team's need at quarterback.
The Cardinals needed to address the quarterback position and get better on the offensive line this offseason. So far, they have taken care of the guard and quarterback positions, but they have to find tackles before this offensive line is good enough to win a playoff spot.
Losing Steve Breaston isn't a huge blow, as it was easy to see during the season that his role was being diminished, but the fact of losing Breaston and signing a backup tight end so far isn't going to excite season ticket buyers.
Atlanta Falcons
2 of 32The Atlanta Falcons have a lot of work to do this offseason. Three of their five starting linemen are free agents still, and they have not yet addressed a need at defensive end.
Much could change over the course of the weekend, but Atlanta needs to get busy.
Moves
Signed DE Ray Edwards (Minnesota)
Re-signed K Matt Bryant
Re-signed CB Eric Weems
Re-signed OT Tyson Clabo
Re-signed LB Stephen Nicholas
Re-signed LB Mike Peterson
Re-signed RFA Brent Grimes to one-year tender
Verdict: Buy
Getting Brent Grimes locked up for the 2011 season was Atlanta's No. 1 priority. Priority No. 2 was re-signing Tyson Clabo.
Priority No. 3 was signing a free agent defensive end, and boy did they. Atlanta moved to strike and picked up a player who many considered to be the best available defensive end. Ray Edwards will round out what should be the most talented roster, top to bottom, in the NFC.
Baltimore Ravens
3 of 32In Baltimore, the Ravens made news early this free-agent period more for who they were letting go than who was coming in.
Baltimore could still re-sign some lost players at a lower rate later on, but as of now, it's hard to see the logic behind letting go of four established veterans.
Moves
Re-signed OG Marshall Yanda
Re-signed CB Chris Carr
Released WR Derrick Mason
Released RB Willis McGahee
Released TE Todd Heap
Released NT Kelly Gregg
Lost WR Donte' Stallworth (Washington)
Lost CB Josh Wilson (Washington)
Verdict: Sell
I have never been one to doubt general manager Ozzie Newsome, but these moves are questionable as of this writing. I do love the move to keep Marshall Yanda, but Baltimore will be relying on young players to fill the holes at wide receiver, tight end and nose tackle.
Baltimore is still in the running for many top cornerbacks this offseason. If it can land a Johnathan Joseph-level player, the verdict will quickly change.
Buffalo Bills
4 of 32It's tough being a bad team in a horrible climate that is rumored to possibly be leaving for Los Angeles down the road, but that's what the Buffalo Bills are dealing with.
As such, it's hard to keep marquee free agents and even harder to convince guys who have never played in Buffalo that the weather, small-town atmosphere and outdated facilities are the place for them.
Moves
Signed QB Tyler Thigpen (Miami)
Re-signed CB Drayton Florence
Signed WR Brad Smith (NY Jets)
Lost LB Paul Posluszny (Jacksonville)
Verdict: Sell
Losing their middle linebacker hurts this defense a lot. Not many believed that Posluszny would actually leave, but the warm weather and $42 million Jacksonville was offering were hard to beat.
Tyler Thigpen is a great option as a backup to Ryan Fitzpatrick, but it's not enough for a bad Buffalo team.
The addition of Brad Smith in Chan Gailey's offense should be fun to watch, but adding a multi-purpose wide receiver is not a "need" move, at all. The Bills need to get better on defense and the offensive line.
Carolina Panthers
5 of 32It was thought that the Carolina Panthers might see a player exodus after a 2-14 season.
That's not the case at all. This is what I get for calling Panthers owner Jerry Richardson "cheap" earlier this summer.
Carolina has done the best job so far of retaining its players, but it may have overpaid to do so.
Moves
Re-signed RB DeAngelo Williams
Re-signed DE Charles Johnson
Re-signed LB James Anderson
Re-signed LB Jon Beason
Re-signed LB Thomas Davis
Traded for TE Greg Olsen (Chicago)
Signed TE Ben Hartstock (NY Jets)
Signed S Kevin Payne (Chicago)
Signed S Sean Considine (Jacksonville)
Signed LB Omar Gaither (Philadelphia)
Signed K Olindo Mare (Seattle)
Signed DT Ron Edwards (Kansas City)
Verdict: Buy
Originally I had thought of the Panthers offseason a "sell", but the moves they have made are really starting to add up—and in a good way. Greg Olsen will give Cam Newton a great tight end to mature with, and the deals to keep established linebackers on defense long-term was smart.
Chicago Bears
6 of 32One of many teams who have done absolutely nothing this week, the Chicago Bears have added zero players.
Moves
Signed WR Roy Williams (Dallas)
Signed WR Sam Hurd (Dallas)
Signed TE Matt Spaeth (Pittsburgh)
Signed P Adam Podlesh (Jacksonville)
Signed DE Vernon Gholston (NY Jets)
Re-signed LB Nick Roach
Lost S Kevin Payne (Carolina)
Lost TE Greg Olsen via trade (Chicago
Verdict: Sell
The Bears were a team I expected to be involved heavily in talks for top wide receivers like Sidney Rice, Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards—instead they pick up players off the Dallas Cowboys' trash pile in Williams and Hurd.
So far, they have lost out on my top two free-agent wide receivers in Rice and Holmes, and traded away their best pass catcher in Greg Olsen.
Chicago needs to piss or get off the pot.
Cincinnati Bengals
7 of 32Cincinnati fans knew this offseason would be based more on players leaving than players coming in—at least they should have.
So far no players have been cut, but I do expect Chad Ochocinco and possibly Antwan Odom to be let go eventually.
The big elephant in the room is whether or not Carson Palmer will retire. So far, there has been no solid news on that front.
Moves
Signed QB Bruce Gradkowski
Signed LB Thomas Howard
Re-signed RB Brian Leonard
Signed G Deuce Lutui (Arizona)
Re-signed S Gibril Wilson
Signed CB Nate Clements (San Francisco)
Verdict: Buy
The Bengals are accepting the fact that Palmer may never play another down and that rookie Andy Dalton should not be able to learn Jay Gruden's offense in four weeks.
Bruce Gradkowski is a solid quarterback to bring in for one season and then hand the ball to Dalton.
Cleveland Browns
8 of 32Cleveland was expected to be a player for defensive ends and wide receivers.
While the Browns have been linked to guys like defensive end Ray Edwards, they have yet to make any deals.
Moves
Signed RB Brandon Jackson (Green Bay)
Signed S Usama Young (New Orleans)
Re-signed LB Jayme Mitchell
Traded for DT Brodrick Bunkley (Philadelphia) for fifth-round pick
Re-signed G Billy Yates
Released QB Jake Delhomme
Lost LB Jason Trusnik (Miami)
Verdict: Sell
The Browns finally brought in two free agents, but both are backups. The Browns are not talented enough to bypass opportunities to add starters to this roster.
The Browns did the right thing by cutting quarterback Jake Delhomme, but this is a roster in need of a talent infusion.
Dallas Cowboys
9 of 32The Cowboys made news for cutting well-known starters on day one of the offseason period. They backed that up today with a re-signing that sets the tone for their 2011 season.
Many expect Dallas to be a player for cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, but I don't. Dallas may go another route at cornerback or keep its two starters from 2010.
Moves
Re-signed OT Doug Free
Re-signed OG Kyle Kosier
Re-signed DE Marcus Spears
Released RB Marion Barber III
Released WR Roy Wiliams
Released OG Leonard Davis
Lost WR Sam Hurd (Chicago)
Verdict: Buy
The three players released by Dallas were all overpaid and overrated, even Davis, who has made three Pro Bowls in the last four years.
Dallas did the smart thing by re-signing Doug Free. This lets the team keep rookie first-round pick Tyron Smith at his more natural position of right tackle early in his career.
Denver Broncos
10 of 32The Denver Broncos will be making a trade to move Kyle Orton within the next few days, but until then we are basing their offseason on another, less notable trade.
Moves
Signed RB Willis McGahee (Baltimore)
Traded WR Jabar Gaffney to Washington for DT Jeremy Jarmon
Released RB Correll Buckhalter
Verdict: Buy
Denver has made two quiet moves, but both are good for the team. It was also heavily involved in negotiations for running back DeAngelo Williams (Carolina) before wisely backing down.
The Broncos badly needed to add defensive tackles, and Jarmon looks like a nice platoon player at the three-technique position. Head coach John Fox knows a thing or two about defensive linemen, so I trust this trade.
With Denver signing running back Willis McGahee, they may be able to move former first-round pick Knowshon Moreno for draft picks, or help on the defensive line.
Detroit Lions
11 of 32The Detroit Lions have made no major moves yet, but they have done some smart housecleaning in locking up key backups and an important special teams player.
If the Lions can lure Stephen Tulloch to town, watch out.
Moves
Re-signed K Dave Rayner
Re-signed QB Drew Stanton
Re-signed S John Wendling
Signed LB Justin Durant (Jacksonville)
Signed CB Eric Wright (Cleveland)
Signed DB Maurice Leggett (Kansas City)
Signed WR Rashied Davis (Chicago)
Re-signed C Dylan Gandy
Verdict: Buy
The moves are not flashy, but they are solid and will provide Detroit with two options behind quarterback Matthew Stafford should be go down with an injury again.
Getting better on defense will be the next big step for the Lions this week. The move to add linebacker Justin Durant gives Detroit another fast, active linebacker.
Eric Wright was once thought to be an up and coming star at cornerback in the NFL. While he's not reached that level, he's still better than anyone the Lions have on the roster.
Green Bay Packers
12 of 32The defending Super Bowl champions have not made much noise this week, even though they have many key free agents of their own to re-sign.
Green Bay cannot sit back and hope to win another title without improving the roster through re-signings and new player additions.
Moves
Re-signed K Mason Crosby
Lost G Daryn Colledge (Arizona)
Verdict: Sell
Green Bay has notified linebacker Nick Barnett that it will either release or trade him, so count him among the departed. This isn't a major move, as Desmond Bishop took over for him nicely in 2010, but it matters.
The Packers need to make moves fast to re-sign wide receiver James Jones if they hope to keep him in town.
Houston Texans
13 of 32Making moves to keep your own players is not a bad thing, and I'm not penalizing teams for it, but the Houston Texans need to get better outside of their own locker room if they want to compete with the Indianapolis Colts in 2011.
Moves
Signed CB Johnathan Joseph (Cincinnati)
Signed S Danieal Manning (Chicago)
Re-signed QB Matt Leinart
Re-signed WR Jacoby Jones
Re-signed DL Damione Lewis
Re-signed OT Rashad Butler
Verdict: Buy
The Texans made the smartest move of free agency so far by refusing to raise their bid for Nnamdi Asomugha and signing No. 2 cornerback Johnathan Joseph. The addition of Joseph and Manning will help solidify a secondary that was terrible in 2010.
Indianapolis Colts
14 of 32The window to win another Super Bowl is closing in Indianapolis, and the Colts have done nothing this week to improve a roster that hasn't improved much in the last few seasons.
Moves
Re-signed QB Peyton Manning
Re-signed RB Joseph Addai
Re-signed K Adam Vinatieri
Signed QB Nate Davis (San Francisco/Seattle PS)
Re-signed S Melvin Bullitt
Verdict: Sell
Getting Peyton Manning signed to a five-year deal, at a discount even, makes the Colts' offseason grade better. However, they have a lot of work to do on this roster before they are considered favorites in the AFCS.
Indianapolis has sat and watched a lot so far this week, which is historically what it does, but it should be targeting improvements on defense.
Jacksonville Jaguars
15 of 32The Jacksonville Jaguars have made one move during free agency, but it was a damn good one.
Finding a middle linebacker instantly improves a defense that was terrible in 2010.
If Jacksonville can pull off another upset and add a talented cornerback, it might just surprise people this year.
Moves
Signed LB Paul Posluszny (Buffalo)
Signed LB Clint Sessions (Indianapolis)
Signed S Dawan Landry (Baltimore)
Signed P Matt Turk (Houston)
Lost LB Justin Durant (Detroit)
Signed CB Drew Coleman (NY Jets)
Signed C Jason Spitz (Green Bay)
Verdict: Buy
Jacksonville does have additional needs to address, but getting a marquee free agent like Posluszny to sign with it will give the franchise confidence and also give prospective players a better feeling about signing with the ballclub.
Two moves that may not receive as much attention, but are just as important, are the Landry and Sessions deals. Both are great values and will give Jacksonville's defense a much needed kick in the rear.
Kansas City Chiefs
16 of 32The Kansas City Chiefs may have trouble repeating their 2010 record when facing a much harder schedule this season, but at least they will be fun to watch.
And cheesus, they will be fast.
Moves
Signed WR Steve Breaston (Arizona)
Signed DT Kelly Gregg (Baltimore)
Re-signed WR Terrance Copper
Re-signed C Casey Wiegmann
Re-signed S Jon McGraw
Re-signed TE Leonard Pope
Re-signed RB Jackie Battle
Re-signed CB Travis Daniels
Re-signed T Ryan O'Callaghan
Verdict: Buy
I have no idea where the Chiefs plan to use Steve Breaston yet, but all I know is they will have the NFL's fastest offense.
Breaston joins Jamaal Charles, Dexter McCluster, Dwayne Bowe and Jonathan Baldwin to give Kansas City a solid corp of young skill players.
Kansas City has, on paper, very few holes left to fill.
Miami Dolphins
17 of 32The entire football world is waiting for the Miami Dolphins to make a trade for quarterback Kyle Orton (Denver), but until that happens we're basing a quiet offseason in Miami on the two moves they've made so far and the one deal they failed to finalize.
Moves
Signed QB Matt Moore (Carolina)
Signed LB Jason Trusnik (Cleveland)
Signed LB Kevin Burnett
Traded for RB Reggie Bush (New Orleans)
Re-signed DL Tony McDaniel
Released LB Channing Crowder
Verdict: Sell
Miami did a nice job signing two underrated players on defense, but the big move that everyone expected was bringing in a running back.
DeAngelo Williams has re-signed in Carolina, and every day that Ahmad Bradshaw doesn't sign elsewhere makes it all the more likely he will return to the Giants. That left the Dolphins with Reggie Bush as their top option.
Bush has never lived up to expectations in New Orleans. In Miami it is likely he will be the featured back, with bruiser Daniel Thomas complementing him.
I actually like Chad Henne, but Matt Moore is not a realistic option as a starting quarterback if Miami decides to sit Henne.
Minnesota Vikings
18 of 32You have to give the Minnesota Vikings credit for staying busy.
The team traded pocket change for a quarterback to carry them through Christian Ponder's transition to the NFL, locked up a receiver to replace Sidney Rice (Seattle) and kept one of the best kickers in the NFL.
Moves
Traded 2012 sixth-round pick and 2013 conditional draft pick for QB Donovan McNabb (Washington)
Signed WR Devin Aromashodu (Chicago)
Signed DT Remi Ayodele (New Orleans)
Signed WR Michael Jenkins (Atlanta)
Re-signed K Ryan Longwell
Lost WR Sidney Rice (Seattle)
Lost QB Tarvaris Jackson (Seattle)
Verdict: Buy
I love the deal to get Donovan McNabb for what amounts to two sixth-round draft picks.
If McNabb doesn't work out, no harm done.
If he does, Minnesota has a quarterback who could lead it to a wild-card berth in what many thought would be a rebuilding year.
New England Patriots
19 of 32I have told myself in the past to never question Bill Belichick, but what the hell is he doing?
The New England Patriots cut their best outside linebacker and then re-signed a veteran running back after drafting two players at the position this year.
Moves
OG Logan Mankins signed one-year franchise tender
Traded 2013 fifth-round draft pick for DL Albert Haynesworth (Washington)
Traded for WR Chad Ochocinco (Cincinnati)
Re-signed RB Sammy Morris
Released LB Tully Banta-Cain
Released DE Ty Warren
Released OT Nick Kaczur
Released TE Alge Crumpler
Released DL Marcus Stroud
Verdict: Buy
The fact that Logan Mankins signed his franchise tender on time this year is huge, as it guarantees he will be in camp on time and will not hold out of any games early this season, but how has this team improved?
The Patriots now have five running backs on the roster, assuming restricted free-agent BenJarvus Green-Ellis is back, but no proven pass rushers.
It took New England a little while to get started, but they hit the jackpot on Thursday with trades for Albert Haynesworth and Chad Ochocinco.
New Orleans Saints
20 of 32The New Orleans Saints were not expected to be big players on the free-agent market, and they haven't been. The plan here is to re-sign as many key free agents as possible, something the Saints started today. However, they must find a way to keep guard Carl Nicks, who has yet to sign his RFA tender.
Moves
Re-signed WR Lance Moore
Re-signed OT Jermon Bushrod
Re-signed LB Scott Shanle
Re-signed LB Jo-Lonn Dunbar
Re-signed LB Danny Clark
Signed RB Darren Sproles (San Diego)
Signed FB Korey Hall (Green Bay)
Signed LB Will Herring (Seattle)
Traded RB Reggie Bush to Miami
Verdict: Buy
The Saints' free-agent acquisitions rank among the more boring in the NFL so far, even including the trade of the $11 million man, Reggie Bush—but it works.
New Orleans has one of the best overall rosters in the NFL, so making moves to keep established starters from leaving in the future is smart business.
New York Giants
21 of 32The New York Giants' biggest moves this week have been who they let go.
The big task for the G-men will be locking up wide receiver Steve Smith and running back Ahmad Bradshaw.
Once that's done, they can start looking at possibly giving other players extensions or building depth on the offensive and defensive lines.
Moves
Signed C David Baas (San Francisco)
Re-signed DE Mathias Kiwanuka
Re-signed T Kevin Boothe
Released C Shaun O'Hara
Released G Rich Seubert
Released DT Barry Cofield
Verdict: Sell
If New York loses either Smith or Bradshaw, it will be hurting to replace both with short notice.
The move to sign Baas is a good one, but he has struggled to stay healthy in San Francisco and is not a sure thing for the Giants.
New York Jets
22 of 32The New York Jets started the offseason right by re-signing their priority free agent, wide receiver Santonio Holmes. The rest of their re-signings are now on hold as the team tries to convince cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha to join the J-E-T-S.
Moves
Re-signed WR Santonio Holmes
Re-signed T Wayne Hunter
Re-signed K Nick Folk
Lost QB Kellen Clemens (Washington)
Verdict: Buy
The Jets appear to be a favorite to land Asomugha, a move that would completely shake the landscape of the NFL. If they cannot sign Asomugha, the Jets will return their focus to Antonio Cromartie.
It looks like wide receivers Brad Smith and Braylon Edwards will be allowed to leave.
Oakland Raiders
23 of 32The Oakland Raiders are usually known for making head-scratching moves. So far this offseason they've played it safe by letting expensive veterans leave and avoiding the temptation to overpay for players with expired contracts.
Maybe this is a sign of a new era for the Raiders.
Moves
Signed QB Trent Edwards (Jacksonville)
Re-signed DE Jarvis Moss
Lost OG Robert Gallery (Seattle)
Lost QB Bruce Gradkowski (Cincinnati)
Verdict: Buy
The Raiders have not done much, but they did not and do not need to.
The best moves for Oakland have been allowing Gallery, Gradkowski and other free agents to leave town without breaking the bank for them.
Philadelphia Eagles
24 of 32As fans we are all holding our breath waiting for the Philadelphia Eagles to trade backup quarterback Kevin Kolb.
And while we all waited and watched the Kolb situation, Philadelphia went out and signed a dang good defensive end.
Moves
Signed DE Jason Babin (Tennessee)
Signed QB Vince Young (Tennessee)
Signed DT Cullen Jenkins (Green Bay)
Signed CB Nnamdi Asomugha (Oakland)
Signed TE Donald Lee (Green Bay)
Signed WR Johnnie Lee Higgins (Oakland)
Traded for CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (Arizona) and 2012 second-round pick
Traded DT Brodrick Bunkley to Cleveland for fifth-round pick
Verdict: Buy
Picking up a top 10 caliber cornerback and a draft pick in exchange for a backup quarterback was sheer genius. Replacing that backup with a talented player like Young was just as smart.
The signing of Jason Babin makes sense, but is he more than a one-year wonder? Having former DL coach Jim Washburn with him in Philadelphia is a huge part of this puzzle.
Update: Well, we didn't see that one coming. The NFL Network is reporting the Eagles have signed No. 1 free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. If so, NFC teams can forget making the Super Bowl. Philadelphia will be the conference rep.
Pittsburgh Steelers
25 of 32Maybe the best teams in the NFL know something the rest of us don't.
The Pittsburgh Steelers, Green Bay Packers, New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts have all sat back and watched the Carolina Panthers and Washington Redskins overspend, waiting for the market to cool.
Moves
Re-signed CB Ike Taylor
Re-signed OT Willie Colon
Re-signed OT Jonathan Scott
Re-signed K Shaun Suisham
Released T Max Starks
Verdict: Buy
Pittsburgh needed to lock up Ike Taylor, and it did. Keeping tackles Colon and Scott will give Pittsburgh the consistency they have lacked at the position over the last several seasons.
San Diego Chargers
26 of 32Well, you can't blame the San Diego Chargers for being active over the first few days of free agency. Hey, we are excited too.
Moves
WR Vincent Jackson signed one-year franchise tender
Re-signed S Eric Weddle
Re-signed T Jeromey Clary
Re-signed TE Randy McMichael
Signed LB Takeo Spikes (San Francisco)
Signed LB Travis LaBoy (San Francisco)
Re-signed LB Antwan Barnes
Verdict: Buy
The Chargers have a talented roster, and they have made moves to keep that talent together.
The team kept its best wide receiver, found a replacement at inside linebacker and kept a talented offensive line together.
Again, it's hard to argue against.
San Francisco 49ers
27 of 32There are two schools of thought regarding the San Francisco 49ers' free-agent moves thus far:
1) They are smart for keeping a veteran quarterback and young defensive end in town.
2) They are absolutely stupid for re-signing Alex Smith.
Moves
Signed K David Akers
Re-signed QB Alex Smith
Re-signed DE Ray McDonald
Lost C David Baas (Giants)
Lost LB Takeo Spikes (San Diego)
Released QB David Carr
Verdict: Sell
The 49ers dropped out of the running for cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, leaving their only new player as kicker David Akers.
If that happens, everything will change. I'm sure most 49er fans would gladly take one more year of Alex Smith if the team can sign the NFL's best cornerback.
Seattle Seahawks
28 of 32There are some who do not like the aggressive moves made by the Seattle Seahawks this week. I am not one of those people.
Seattle has nothing to lose. It was 7-9 last season and won a home playoff game. Pete Carroll can afford to gamble on a young quarterback right now.
Moves
Signed QB Tarvaris Jackson (Minnesota)
Signed WR Sidney Rice (Minnesota)
Signed OG Robert Gallery (Oakland)
Signed DT Alan Branch (Arizona)
Re-signed LB Leroy Hill
Re-signed DT Junior Siavii
Re-signed FB Michael Robinson
Lost QB Matt Hasselbeck (Tennessee)
Lost WR Brandon Stokley (Washington)
Lost LB Will Herring (New Orleans)
Verdict: Buy
So the Seahawks lost a quarterback they didn't want and signed three players who can help them immediately this season in the NFL's weakest division? I'd call that a good day at the office.
The signing of Tarvaris Jackson will meet criticism, but Jackson will only compete for the starting job with Charlie Whitehurst.
The moves to bring in Rice and Gallery may be the best signings any team has made so far.
St. Louis Rams
29 of 32The St. Louis Rams have a good thing going with a talented, young roster.
That doesn't mean they haven't tried to get better with big free-agent signings this week.
The Rams made a move to shore up a weakness on defense and were rumored to be in play for Sidney Rice before he signed with Seattle.
Moves
Signed S Quintin Mikell (Philadelphia)
Signed OG Harvey Dahl (Atlanta)
Signed CB Al Harris (Miami)
Signed LB Zac Diles (Houston)
Signed DT Justin Bannan (Denver)
Verdict: Buy
St. Louis has yet to make a huge splash in free agency, but the signing of Mikell has flown too far under the radar. He is a solid option at strong safety and fills a need at a key position on the Rams' depth chart.
Getting a very underrated guard, when healthy, in Harvey Dahl was a great pick up for a team that's really improving through the draft and free agency.
If St. Louis can get a top-tier wide receiver to sign, the offseason will be complete.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
30 of 32Tampa Bay may have fallen prey to the enormous amounts of money being thrown around by NFL teams today.
The Buccaneers were smart to lock up a key young player, but they may have paid him on potential and not realistic expectations.
Moves
Re-signed G Davin Joseph
Re-signed OT Jeremy Trueblood
Signed P Michael Koenan (Atlanta)
Re-signed LB Quincy Black
Verdict: Sell
Giving a second-tier linebacker $29 million over five years seems like too much to me, especially when looking at the other deals being made. Quincy Black is a good player, and the Buccaneers wanted to keep their core defensive players together, but does this rule out a possible Barrett Ruud re-signing?
I do like the moves to keep Joseph and Trueblood on the offensive line, but that's about it.
Tennessee Titans
31 of 32Well, for one team to make the best moves this offseason, someone has to also make the worst. Congratulations, Tennessee Titans.
Moves
Signed QB Matt Hasselbeck (Seattle)
Signed DT Shaun Smith (Kansas City)
Re-signed C Leroy Harris
Released QB Vince Young
Verdict: Sell
Signing a quarterback who will turn 36 years old during Week 3 of the 2011 NFL season to a multi-year deal is the worst possible move the Titans could have made in finding a mentor for rookie Jake Locker.
Hasselbeck is a West Coast offense quarterback with no experience in Chris Palmer's offense. He also cannot be considered a reliable option to start all season, much less for multiple years.
This is the Jake Delhomme signing of 2011.
Washington Redskins
32 of 32There are teams that have done nothing through three days of free agency.
And then there are the Washington Redskins, who are treating free agency like a 100-yard dash.
Moves
Re-signed WR Santana Moss
Signed DT Barry Cofield (NY Giants)
Signed OG Chris Chester (Baltimore)
Signed WR Donte' Stallworth (Baltimore)
Signed QB Kellen Clemens (NY Jets)
Signed CB Josh Wilson (Baltimore)
Traded DT Jeremy Jarmon to Denver for WR Jabar Gaffney
Traded DL Albert Haynesworth to New England for 2013 fifth-round draft pick
Verdict: Buy
For those counting at home, the Redskins acquired four wide receivers today. They also drafted Leonard Hankerson at the position. The Redskins are hoarding receivers like the Patriots are running backs.
There are some solid moves here, all good roster builders, but the sheer number of wide receiver signings overshadows smart signings like those of Barry Cofield and Josh Wilson.
