Rob Ryan The Cowboys' Defensive Coordinator? Dallas Fans Beware

J. Allen StatonJan 15, 2011

Reports out of Valley Ranch have all but annointed Rob Ryan as the new Defensive Coordinator in Dallas.

After talking to Greg Manusky, who has since accepted a position with the Chargers as their DC, ย Vic Fangio, who appears to be headed to San Francisco to be the 49ers' new DC, and Todd Bowles, who is returning to Miami, the Dallas Cowboys are in serious talks with Rob Ryan.

I have a lot of respect, some say undeservedly so, for Jason Garrett.

I have extremely lofty expectations for his future as the Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

If this is any indication of things to come however, I may have drastically overestimated his abity to evaluate talent. Coaching talent anyway.

Rob Ryan is the twin brother of the incredibly arrogant, foot-fetished Rex Ryan of the New York Jets.

He is the son of incredibly arrogant and peer-punching Buddy Ryan.

Rob Ryan has an impressive pedigree.

His father was a helluva Defensive Coach, and his brother just led the Jets to a victory over Peyton Manning and the Colts in the playoffs.

Rob Ryan has...um. He's...Uh. He's been a Defensive Coordinator in the NFL for 7 seasons, that's what he's done. He was in Oakland for 5, and then with the Browns for the past two.

Success you ask? Oh no, he's not been successful, but he's a Ryan. Isn't that impressive?

Okay, he had a successful year in Oakland 5 years ago.

In 2006 his defense ranked 3rd in overall defense, so maybe I'm being a little tough on him.

Here's how his defenses have ranked in his 7 years as a Coordinator:

From 2004 - 2008 in Oakland: 30th, 27th, 3rd, 22nd, 27th.

In 2009 and 2010 in Cleveland: 31st and 22nd

Cleveland is not asking him back. Why would they? Why would anyone?

The vacated position of Defensive Coordinator in Dallas looks to be Rob Ryan's new gig.

Dallas fans beware.
