Bill Belichick Responds to Rex Ryan's Comments on Bills vs. Patriots
New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick offered a typical Belichickian response to Rex Ryan's antics ahead of Sunday's game with the Buffalo Bills on Wednesday.
Which was, essentially, no response.
“I’m just focused on getting ready for the Bills,” Belichick told reporters. “I’m not really in tune to all of that. I’m sure it’s important to you guys but it’s not really anything I spend much time with.”
Ryan has been his typically boisterous self coming off a win against the Arizona Cardinals. He opened his Monday press conference by poking fun at Belichick, giving a monotone impression of the Patriots coach before expressing his admiration.
"I think my admiration is really for Belichick more than anything," Ryan said, per Mike Rodak of ESPN.com. "As a coach, that's the guy. He'll go down as probably the best in the history of the game. I like poking fun at him and all that stuff, but there's no coach I respect more than him."
Ryan upped the ante Wednesday, posing as a reporter while asking Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman if he would play quarterback this week. Rodak provided a transcript of the exchange:
""Julian, this is, uh, Walt Patulski from The Buffalo News," Ryan said. "Are you playing quarterback this week?"
"Huh?" Edelman responded.
"Are you playing quarterback this week?" Ryan repeated.
"I'm gonna do whatever the coaches ask me to do," Edelman said, "so if they ask me to go out and get a glass a water to someone on the sideline, I'm gonna do that with a smile on my face if it helps our team win. So you can ask Coach that one."
"All right, Julian, I will, buddy," Rex said, as he laughed and walked to the lectern.
"
The Patriots have given no indication of who will be under center Sunday. Tom Brady remains suspended one more game for his role in the Deflategate scandal, while backups Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett are dealing with injuries. Garoppolo started the first two games before suffering an AC sprain to his shoulder, while Brissett hurt his thumb in a Week 3 win over the Houston Texans.
The farcical actions of Ryan have rarely resulted in success. Belichick is 11-4 against Ryan-coached teams overall (including playoffs), including losses in four straight contests. Belichick is 9-1 in their last 10 head-to-head matchups after struggling against Ryan early in his New York Jets tenure.
So, regardless of who winds up playing quarterback, odds are the Patriots will walk away from Sunday 4-0 while Ryan's Bills continue licking their wounds.
