Fantasy Football Rankings: Week 6 Big Board
Forget all your preseason fantasy predictions and where you drafted players, because after five weeks you should be reassessing every part of your roster. If you’re still setting lineups with expectations based on last year’s numbers and preseason performances, you’re asking to lose.
Did you take Denver Broncos running back C.J. Anderson to be your RB1? Well, he hasn’t come through and yet we’ve seen the Broncos play five games and win them all, so how long can you wait for him to show up?
Have you seen enough of Seattle Seahawks tight end Jimmy Graham to know that the player who was once considered a no-doubt, top-two fantasy tight end has been reduced to someone you can’t even rely on to be a top producer in your lineup every week?
Obviously, it’s not all bad. Free-agent pickups such as New England Patriots running back Dion Lewis and Green Bay Packers wide receiver James Jones have become reliable fantasy starters over the first five weeks.
We’re officially at the point where only this season’s performance matters. The sooner you can get over disappointing draft picks, bad roster moves and unfortunate injuries, the better off you’ll be as a fantasy owner.
Before we get into this week’s look at the positional rankings, let me remind you that these are compiled with only the earliest snippets of news, especially when it comes to injuries, such as Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones (hamstring). I’ve done my best to integrate what we know, but you’ll have to stay on top of everything throughout the week.
As always, these rankings will be updated throughout the week and right after inactives come down for the early games Sunday.

Quarterbacks: Reliability Is Golden
2 of 7
Better than usual
- Sam Bradford, Phi: Bradford is starting to creep up the fantasy leaderboard, and if not for some poorly timed interceptions and way too many drops, we might already be talking about him as a no-doubt fantasy starter. I expect that conversation to happen next week after he takes apart the New York Giants this weekend. The Giants are a bottom-10 defense against quarterbacks and had their hands full last weekend with San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick.
Worse than usual
- Cam Newton, Car: Because there are so many quarterback injuries and concerns around the league, it’ll be hard to stay away from using Newton in Week 6. Even though they’ve looked a little more vulnerable than expected, especially last week against Andy Dalton and the Cincinnati Bengals, the Seattle Seahawks are still a good defense. Plus, Newton is still low on talent in his receiving corps and hasn’t gotten much help from the rushing attack.
Avoid
- Peyton Manning, Den: The matchup tells you the Cleveland Browns have woefully underachieved as a defense and are giving up the fifth-most fantasy points to quarterbacks this year, so it sets up well for Manning to have a solid game. I’m telling you to avoid the name value of Manning and understand he is a big reason why the Broncos are struggling on offense, which is being hidden by their undefeated record. In previous years, I wouldn’t think twice about Manning crushing a vulnerable defense, but we’re talking about a QB who’s 23rd in total fantasy points at the position after five games. Six players in front of Manning have played just four games.
Sleepers
- Jay Cutler, Chi: Cutler managed to lead the Chicago Bears to a big comeback victory over the Kansas City Chiefs and did so without wide receivers Alshon Jeffery (hamstring) and Eddie Royal (ankle). While it’s still too early to know if either receiver will be back this week, Cutler looks like a good play no matter who is catching passes from him because the Detroit Lions are a complete mess. They’re also giving up the seventh-most fantasy points to quarterbacks in the first five weeks.

Running Backs: The Biggest Roles
3 of 7
Better than usual
- Eddie Lacy, GB: Because the Packers have gotten off to an undefeated start, the only complaining about Lacy is coming from fantasy owners who took him to be their top back. My assertion is that his slow start has to do with the team being extra cautious with him following the ankle injury he suffered in Week 2. The lack of touches is unfortunate, but it’s not like he looks bad; he's still producing at 4.1 yards per carry. Week 6 looks like his time to shine against a San Diego Chargers defense that’s given up the second-most fantasy points to running backs in five weeks. Plus, they’re one of the better pass defenses in the league, which is even more reason to put Lacy in a prominent role.
Worse than usual
- Jonathan Stewart, Car: Stewart has battled multiple leg injuries this season and has failed to find the end zone in his first four games. Even if he’s feeling better coming out of the bye, he’ll face a stiff matchup against a Seattle Seahawks defense that’s been the toughest to get fantasy points on if you’re a running back. Don’t expect Stewart to get off the schneid in Week 6.
Avoid
- Matt Jones, Was: The Washington Redskins are a bad team with a three-headed backfield featuring Jones, Alfred Morris and Chris Thompson. That’s usually reason enough to stay away from the group, but let’s add a matchup with the second-best defense against fantasy running backs in the New York Jets. It’s the wrong place and the wrong time to have Jones.
Sleepers
- LeGarrette Blount, NE: The one New England Patriots running back you can trust on a weekly basis is Dion Lewis, as he proved yet again in Week 5. Blount can be hit-or-miss depending on if he can find the end zone. We’ve seen him in the closer role in recent weeks, but with just 74 yards on 13 carries last week, he didn’t have strong fantasy value because he didn’t score. I’d fully expect the Patriots to have a lead in the second half of this week’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, so Blount isn’t a bad option based on volume and chances to score.

Wide Receivers: There Is No Prototype
4 of 7
Better than usual
- Julian Edelman, NE: Coming into Week 6, Edelman is 11th at wide receiver in total fantasy points and fourth in fantasy points per game. Matchups don’t really matter to him, but he’ll get a favorable one against the Indianapolis Colts. They’ve allowed the third-most fantasy points to wide receivers this year and may not have top cornerback Vontae Davis (foot) at full strength for the second straight game. Plus, Davis likely wouldn’t shadow the versatile Edelman anyway.
- Jordan Matthews, Phi: Matthews has been a disappointing fantasy asset after a strong start in the first two weeks. Drops have plagued him recently, and according to the Washington Post, Matthews already has three drops in just five games. However, he continues to stay active with at least seven targets in every game. Plus, he faces the New York Giants, who had their hands full with a San Francisco 49ers team that had done nothing but struggle with its passing attack. Look for Matthews to rebound in this favorable matchup.
Worse than usual
- Pierre Garcon, Was: Despite the shaky play of quarterback Kirk Cousins, Garcon has been a top-25 fantasy wide receiver with 65.7 points in PPR formats. The Redskins have been crippled by injuries all over their receiving corps, which is a big reason Garcon has remained relevant in fantasy. Staying relevant will be tough this week if you own Garcon, as he’ll be the primary and likely only focus of the Jets defense.
Avoid
- Travis Benjamin, Cle: Plenty of credit should go to the Cleveland Browns for becoming more of a passing offense as opposed to the run-first philosophy it looked like the team was planning on heading into the season. It’s given a boost to quarterback Josh McCown as well as Benjamin, but that will be tough to keep up against the Denver Broncos. No team has been tougher to score on for fantasy QBs and wide receivers than the Broncos. After the team's fairly easy schedule to open the season, the challenges will begin for Cleveland starting against Denver.
Sleepers
- Roddy White, Atl: Through five games, White is barely a top-90 fantasy wide receiver. He has a grand total of eight receptions for 115 yards on 17 targets. With both wide receivers Julio Jones and Leonard Hankerson playing bigger roles and the team sitting at 5-0, there’s really no reason to change anything unless Jones and Hankerson are too hurt to play Thursday night against the Saints. Jones’ status is up in the air because of a hamstring injury, and Hankerson hurt his ribs in Week 5. An absence by either players, but especially Jones, would boost White’s value for the week with a great matchup against the New Orleans Saints.
- Stefon Diggs, Min: Before the Week 5 bye, the Vikings gave Diggs a chance to play a bigger role with Charles Johnson sidelined by a rib injury. In Johnson’s absence, Diggs posted six receptions for 87 yards on 10 targets in a difficult matchup against the Denver Broncos. Johnson isn’t a lock to play, and Mike Wallace is battling a knee issue, so Diggs may remain an important part of Minnesota’s offense. He gets sleeper consideration because the Kansas City Chiefs have allowed the most fantasy points to wide receivers and head to Minnesota for this Week 6 matchup.

Tight Ends: Great Isn't the Norm
5 of 7
Better than usual
- Zach Ertz, Phi: Ertz’s role has been somewhat inconsistent in the Eagles offense thus far with at least seven targets in three games but no more than three in the others. He’s also had some bad luck, such as losing a touchdown to a penalty in Week 4 and sacrificing a couple of scores to teammate and fellow tight end Brent Celek in the last two games. Still, Ertz has outsnapped Celek in all but one game this year and has a chance at a big performance against the New York Giants, who have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to tight ends.
Worse than usual
- Gary Barnidge, Cle – So far, Barnidge is one of the craziest stories in fantasy football, seemingly coming out of nowhere to not only be fantasy-relevant, but also be a top-10 fantasy TE over the first five weeks. This week things will be much tougher for Barnidge and the Browns against the Denver Broncos. The Broncos have been the best defense against fantasy quarterbacks and wide receivers and they’re top 13 against tight ends. Time for Barnidge to come back to earth.
Avoid
- Charles Clay, Buf: The Buffalo Bills are expected to turn to quarterback EJ Manuel for this week’s matchup against the Tennessee Titans. That’s because starting QB Tyrod Taylor is dealing with an MCL issue in his knee. Manuel is basically a great unknown, and that’s not a good thing for Clay or anyone in this offense. Stay away from Clay.
Sleepers
- Jacob Tamme, Atl: Can Tamme build on his eight-catch, 94-yard performance from Week 5 in this week’s matchup against the New Orleans Saints on Thursday night? If wide receivers Julio Jones (hamstring) and Leonard Hankerson (ribs) are too banged up to play or are limited by their injuries, Tamme is a name to watch, as the Saints have allowed the third-most fantasy points to tight ends this year.

Defenses: Ganging Up
6 of 7
Best options based on matchups
- New York Jets: The Jets are already a top-10 fantasy defense in fantasy points per game, but they’ll have a great chance to move up the rankings with a matchup against the Washington Redskins in Week 6. There’s minimal confidence in quarterback Kirk Cousins, they don’t run it well, and the team has given up the 10th-most fantasy points to opposing defenses.
- Cincinnati Bengals: If you can predict which version of the Buffalo Bills will show up on a given week, it would certainly help with their fantasy projections and those of their opponents. The Bengals have been an average fantasy unit but might get a boost from playing against quarterback EJ Manuel this week thanks to the knee injury Tyrod Taylor suffered last week. The Bengals can do some damage if Manuel gets the call.
- Carolina Panthers: With five weeks completed, the Panthers are fifth in total fantasy points despite playing just four games. Coming off their bye, Carolina has to head to Seattle to face the Seahawks. Seattle’s offense has been totally discombobulated and can’t seem to figure out how to fix itself, which has been great for opposing defenses. No team has allowed more fantasy points to opposing defenses than the Seahawks.
- Minnesota Vikings: The Vikings are a top-14 fantasy defense in total points in just four games of action. The talented group comes off the bye and gets to face a Kansas City Chiefs offense that just lost running back Jamaal Charles (torn ACL) for the season. KC has given up the 13th-most fantasy points to defenses in the first five weeks.

Kickers: Nothing Is Automatic
7 of 7
Best options widely available on the waiver wire
- Chandler Catanzaro, Ari: As a top-10 fantasy option, Catanzaro is still up for grabs in many leagues, and this would be a good time to get him. He’s hit a league-high 23 extra points and faces the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend, which certainly isn’t a bothersome matchup. Look for Catanzaro to get plenty of work as part of one of the best teams in the league.
