Report: Lou Williams, Clippers Have 'Momentum' on New Contract Amid Trade Rumors
The Los Angeles Clippers and guard Lou Williams are reportedly making progress toward a contract extension prior to Thursday's NBA trade deadline.
According to ESPN.com's Adrian Wojnarowski and Brian Windhorst, the two sides have picked up "significant momentum," and teams across the league are "increasingly resigned" to Williams and L.A. staying together.
Multiple teams have reportedly expressed interest in acquiring Williams, including the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers.
The 31-year-old Williams is in the midst of a career year, averaging 23.3 points, 5.3 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game. His previous career high in points was 17.5 last season split between the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets.
The Clippers acquired Williams in the offseason in a trade that sent point guard Chris Paul to Houston. The 2014-15 Sixth Man of the Year has previously had stints with the 76ers, Atlanta Hawks, Toronto Raptors, Lakers and Rockets.
He is the Clippers' go-to player offensively, especially following Blake Griffin's move to the Detroit Pistons.
Center DeAndre Jordan has also been heavily rumored to be on the trading block, which means Williams could be the last star-caliber player left on the team if the Clippers decide against dealing him.
Even with the Clippers dismantling their roster since the offseason, they trail the New Orleans Pelicans by only a half-game for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
