Kentavious Caldwell-Pope Rights Renounced by Pistons, SG Will Become UFA

The Detroit Pistons are renouncing their rights to Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, which means he will now become an unrestricted free agent.

Caldwell-Pope was previously a restricted free agent, but with the Pistons hard-capped following the signing of Langston Galloway, they wouldn't have been in a situation conducive to matching a lucrative offer sheet for the 24-year-old wing.

The move comes shortly after the Pistons agreed to trade Marcus Morris to the Boston Celtics for Avery Bradley and a 2019 second-round pick, according to The Vertical's Shams Charania.

As far as Caldwell-Pope's free-agent outlook is concerned, ESPN.com's Zach Lowe noted a pair of teams who previously had plenty of money to spend could be out of the running if KCP's camp moves quickly to find him a new home:

But if Caldwell-Pope remains patient, Wojnarowski reported the Brooklyn Nets will be a "strong contender" to land him—assuming the Washington Wizards match Brooklyn's four-year, $106 million offer sheet for Otto Porter Jr.

ESPN's Bobby Marks noted the only other teams with cap space for the time being are the Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Lakers, Orlando Magic, Philadelphia 76ers and Sacramento Kings. The New York Knicks would also factor into that equation, but only if the Atlanta Hawks match their four-year, $71 million offer sheet to Tim Hardaway Jr.

A 2013 lottery pick of the Pistons, Caldwell-Pope has steadily morphed into a solid three-and-D contributor over the past four seasons.

Last year, he averaged 13.8 points on a career-high 35.0 percent shooting from three, including 36.8 percent on catch-and-shoot attempts.

Caldwell-Pope's pick-and-roll defense could still use some work, but considering he won't turn 25 until February and has proved capable of making developmental strides, he's a worthy gamble for teams in need of perimeter reinforcements.
