The Longest Mock Draft in NFL History Continues...
If I’m wrong about the Dolphins taking Glenn Dorsey with the number one overall pick, I wonder if I can file a lawsuit against them for ruining my mock draft.
Filing lawsuits against NFL teams seems to be the hip thing kids are doing these days. I surely don’t want to be left out.
I’m also wondering if there will be a congressional hearing if a good player drops to the Patriots. Those lousy cheaters. Videotaping other teams. Forget Bin Ladin, someone lock up Bill Belichick!
You know, I was only kidding in my Roger Clemens column when I said there would be a Congressional hearing on spygate. I’m both shocked and saddened to learn that the government was reading and took me seriously.
My bad.
Rather than rehashing my feelings on the government’s involvement in professional sports, here’s a link that does a nice job of doing it for me.
Pick No. 10: New Orleans Saints
Like the Cincinnati Bengals, the New Orleans Saints were a massive disappointment in 2007.
Most of the preseason rags had the Saints among the elite in the NFC. Some experts had them representing the NFC in the Super Bowl (certainly not this expert—and even if I did, since I didn’t start at Bleacher Report until December, there’s no proof).
Jason David was signed as a free agent from the Indianapolis Colts to help sure up what was a questionable defensive secondary. What the Saints forgot is that in 2006, the Colts had a questionable defensive secondary as well.
What happens when you take a questionable cornerback from a questionable secondary and add him to an already questionable secondary?
You get the third worst pass defense in the NFL and a Super Bowl favorite finishing in the bottom 10 of the NFL.
Peyton Manning showed the entire country in the first game of the NFL season exactly how to defeat the Saints: Pick on their secondary, especially Jason David.
There have been a few games in my life were I’ve actually felt sorry for a professional athlete. By the end of that Colts game, I was actually rooting for David to pull a hamstring so his torture would end.
It was painful. Very, very painful.
Week one’s 41-10 loss to the Colts was the start of a trend that continued for the entire season.
Drew Brees and the offense just couldn’t overcome their porous defense.
For the Saints to make their move back into the NFL elite, they’ll have to address the defense early and often in the 2008 NFL draft.
The Pick: Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy
Leodis McKelvin is one of the top three cornerbacks in the draft. Most mocks have either McKelvin or Mike Jenkins as the first cornerback to come off the board.
McKelvin is a prototypical NFL cornerback.
At 5’11, 190 pounds, he has the size most teams look for. He’s relatively fast and has pretty good instincts.
The knock on McKelvin is that he hasn’t exactly played against elite competition (he did play for the Troy Trojans, after all). But he does have the tools that make NFL GMs drool, so I would expect someone to look past the level of competition to the level of potential, which is limitless.
The Saints will make him the first corner taken in the 2008 draft.
Other options: Mike Jenkins, CB, South Florida or Aqib Talib, CB, Kansas

Sean, I'm curious about something. In the Pats column you said you'd rather trade down and acquire Aqib Talib (his name is giving spellcheck on my computer a headache ps.) but what about trading down and taking Leodis? I'm just curious is all. Are you preferring Talib over Leodis based on Leodis' ability to shy away from elite competition, or is the big thing with Talib quite literally that: he's 6'2 giving the Pats a corner who can battle with the taller receivers. Just wondering that's all.
As for the Saints, they were one of the more frustrating teams last year, as people in fantasy leagues all over the world were pulling out their hair over Bush, Deuce, and Brees (early on). I think you're bang on with the fact that the Saints need defense. Some of their corners are getting up there in years (Craft and Thomas), so adding in some fresh legs could be just what they need.

I have long dreamed of a +6 foot cornerback playing in the NE secondary. Especially after watching the Super Bowl....a taller CB would have come in handy a few times.
I have Aqib as the top ranked corner in the draft. I didn't think anyone else did, until I checked out Kiper's big board this morning. For a few seconds I considered changing my rankings, but I really like Talib. So, as a fan, I'd rather NE trade down and grab him.
Aqib is taller, stronger, and played against better college competition.
Between Jenkins and Leodis, I'd take Leodis...

Their defense betrayed them this past season--but they could use a cornerback because their CBs got burned especially their game against the Colts.

I couldn't agree more with this pick. The Saints NEED a stronger backfield and McKelvin would be a big step in the right direction for them. I personally like Aqib Talib better, but i can see him falling to a later pick in favor of McKelvin seeing as New Orleans seems to like corner's of McKelvin's size more (5 out of 7 of their corners are within an inch and five pounds of him)

Hey SEAN, CB Aqib Talib sounds like some terrorist from Iraq. I'll bet he's no match for CB Nnamdi Asomugha of the Raiders. The Saints are one of the sorriest NFL franchises in history. What have they done ever? Nothing! I'm sorry that Hurricane Katrina didn't wipe out their sorry ass scrub team. New Orleans has a football team and no town. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA !!!!!!!!!! The Saints will have to make this draft a good one, to redeem themselves for picking the biggest RB bust in history, Reggie Bush. Reggie Bush fucked shit up for my USC Trojans, but is a major scrub in the NFL. A good rookie season and that's it. The real RB named Bush is the Raiders Michael Bush. We'll see what the Saints got this year when the Raiders come to their poor, shitty, flooded ass town. Hey SEAN, your dreaming about big black football players? I was right on your Raiders forum. Your a bigtime homo!

Wow. You're acting like an ass. You may not agree with Sean's picks, but you don't have to post a horribly bigoted and insulting response. It's rude, inappropriate, and makes you look like an uneducated jerk. Although, I'm pretty sure you know that, or you would have had the balls to leave your name. We'll see what happens when the Saints play the Raiders.
Also - have some respect. Sean took the time to write a well thought out article. Agree or disagree, there is NO REASON to behave in such a juvenile manner.

Anonymous..did someone from New Orleans or the South in general beat your ass or are you just jealous because your raiders are horrible? Making comments degrading a city and a fanbase in general because of a hurricane shows your immaturity and you might as well have a big blinking sign reading "IM A JACKASS..DONT RESPOND TO MY POINTLESS posts next to your name

Hey "anonymous" you wouldn't say that to a NOLA resident, cause you're just a pussie bitch.
Oh, and knowing you're a Raider and USC Rubbers fan = Greatest irony of all.
from 2 months ago
Oh, I most definitely would say it to a ''NOLA''. Whatever dumb shit that means.

Awwww, sounds like someone doesn't like the taste of sour grapes...GET USED TO THE RAIDERS LOSING, SUSIE!!! As long as they've got oxygen theivin hungry ass havin smhucks like you as fans, that is.
On a positive note, I'm glad to hear that the siants will play the Riaders this year, and at home no less. I'll just mark that one as a win right now. SHitheel. You sound like you got a real purty mouth there, hot pants. I'll see you at the game, that is if you decide to grace us filthy little swamp dwellers with your divine Californian presence.... Fag.
NOLA = New Orleans, Louisiana. SInce you seem to be unfamiliar withthe concept of acronyms. They don't teach you lil' Trojans English at USC?

I think the Saints trade with the ravens, if Dorsey or Ellis are there, and pick 8th.

As a Saints fan, I hope and pray a better defense will come out of this offseason, but I don't know that they couldn't use this pick a little better. With the free-agent acquisitions and trades that they've made so far, and the potential for more defensive pick-ups before the draft, I'd like to think that they'll work on the offense a little bit - maybe someone for Drew Brees to throw the ball to, or someone to help Reggie Bush and Deuce McAllister out if there are still injury issues next year. (big "if" - being three deep at running back, reinforcements should probably be a lower concern.) There's no denying that the defense needs help, but the hot and cold offensive production also needs to stop. The problem with that theory is that there really aren't a whole lot of viable options for tight ends and wide receivers that early on. As a Notre Dame fan I'm a little partial to John Carlson, but his combine performance along with the horrific season that the school had has really dropped his draft potential, so even if they wanted him, it's a good gamble that he'll be around later on. If they don't pick up a wide receiver from free agency (like maybe the Cardinals Bryant Johnson) Malcolm Kelly has possibility. He's a big receiver who could be a major asset - and he has alot of the traits that Sean Peyton looks for. DeSean Jackson could be an option as a receiver with enough speed to take some of the special teams pressure off Reggie Bush, but he's small, and with "star receiver" character issues he may not be worth the risk.

Why would we even think about taking a reciever in the the draft we have a reciever that has size and speed that sean peyton looks for by the name of ROBERT MEACHEM so to get another reciever in the draft would just add to the number of stupid moves the saints have made on recent years. The saints need to address cornerback in the first round. Maybe somebody like leodis mcclevin or mike jenkins and in the second round we need to address the defensive tackle with somebody like pat sims and in the third round we need to address safety because lets face it josh bullocks is not a premier safety. The saints could draft thomas mcloud from california. Since we have signed two linebackers in the offseason they could use the fourth round pick on a guy like ali highsmith who will probaly still be their because of a poor combine but is still one of the top linebackers in the draft. The fifth round pick should go on another linebacker just incase morgan don't pan out. And once again the six and seventh round picks should go on cornerbacks and defensive tackles. This is were you find the stars of the draft people who don't have raw talent so they use fundamentals to make plays (tom brady, marcus colston, willie parker, pierre thomas who is a better runningback than bush.) But I think they should take chevis jackson or jonathan zenon who will still be their because of a poor 40 time which is overrated. And they can use the free agents after the draft to fix whatever problems we may have on the offensive line. (We only gave up 13 sacks). Oh yeah bench jason david.

GEAUX SAINTS!!!!! SUPER BOWL GUMBO RECIPE- a 325 plus rookie DT to plug tha d-line on side of big HOLLIS THOMAS.WILL SMITH should up this season after taking a vacation last year!GRANT do well every year against the run except the same with VILMA and FUJITA backing tha d-line we can stop tha best backs in the in nfl!
we need a nice young CB WITH 4.3 ,4.4 SPEED!!MCKENZIE and YOUNG tha only chance we have at stopping tha pass rite now and YOUNG have a lot more 2 learn so we cant rely on him just yet.RANDEL GAY...hahahahahaha thats all i got 2 say about that. JASON DAVID should play nickelback or serve as THE NEW WATERBOY!! so our number 1 pick should be a corner since MICKEY LOOMAS dont have an eye for talent on the defensive side of tha ball! PLEASE STOP SOMEONE THIS YEAR!!!!!
last but not least WE NEED A FREE SAFETY!JOSH BULLOCKS should be on special teams since STEVE GLEASON retired!he's a poor tackler he has poor field vision and he blow far to many defensive schemes!YES HE IS THA WEAKEST LINK!ROMAN HARPER is a solid run support safety thats getting better by the year hes not to bad in coverage either i must say that guy is good with me.

As a saints fan, i seriously hope we dont pick up a corner at the 10 spot. I dont see any corners in this draft that will make that big of an impact. I understand most of these corners are the best at their position and so many teams need corners, they will come off the board. However Im hoping for us to jump up 3 spots or so to get Ellis from USC. I'd rather have a DT. No single corner is going to come in and help us get to the superbowl THIS YEAR. The draft is so deep we could easily pick one up in the 3rd round, coach and train him up to help us in the future. In the second round im looking for Adibi from VT to still be there. Im lookin for our draft to go DT, LB, CB, S, C, WR, CB...then again he saints never do what you think they will do
from about 1 month ago
The Saints to draft Leodis Mekelvin with the 10th pick in the second round could pick LB Xavier Alabi from (VT). They could also play it safe and trade for Lito Shepard some kind of way. Other needs is to find a WR to put on side of Marques in the draft like Early of LSU. Also find them a young DT.
