NFL Power Rankings: Who Is the League's Real Dream Team?

Ryan PhillipsJun 6, 2018

While the Philadelphia Eagles made the biggest splashes during free agency and were referred to as the "Dream Team," there is another squad out there that looks destined for greatness this season. While their defense needs some work, the New England Patriots are the NFL's real top dog.

After two weeks, the Patriots have averaged 563 yards per game. That's almost 90 yards more per game than the second-place Carolina Panthers. At this point, reigning NFL MVP Tom Brady is on pace to throw for more than 7,500 yards. I obviously don't expect him to keep that pace up, but the Patriots have looked absolutely unstoppable on offense.

Brady has hit nine different receivers thus far, and four players—Wes Welker, Deion Branch, Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez—have more than 10 receptions already. Once Chad Ochocinco gets more comfortable with New England's offense, you've got to believe he'll be more involved than the three catches he has thus far.

Second-year tight end Aaron Hernandez has become a real threat for Brady, but he will likely miss several weeks with a sprained MCL. While he will be missed, I don't expect that to slow down the team's attack.

The Patriots do have a lot of work to do defensively. But the fact that they are switching to more of a 4-3 look from their former 3-4 scheme probably has something to do with players being out of position. In addition to that, the Pats released a big part of their secondary in Brandon Meriweather earlier this year. They are clearly still adjusting to his absence, as they have allowed an average of 381 passing yards per game.

In their first two games, the Patriots have six sacks, but haven't been able to get consistent pressure. I believe that will improve as the season goes along.

If New England somehow rights the ship defensively, they will be almost unbeatable. Tom Brady looks to be on his way to another MVP season, and his offense doesn't look like it can be stopped.

That offensive firepower makes the Patriots far and away the NFL's top team right now.
