The 5 Worst Case Free-Agency Scenarios for the Dallas Cowboys Post-Lockout

Jason HenryJun 7, 2018

With news that the NFL lockout is set to end by the end of the week, teams are gearing up for a frenzied free-agency period.

The Dallas Cowboys have their eyes set on cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha and safety Michael Huff. There’s also linebacker Barrett Ruud and defensive lineman Jacques Cesaire.

Who will the ‘Boys spend their resources on and is it worth it? If Jerry is unable to land his prized free agent then what?

Let's take a look at the five worst case free-agency scenarios for the Dallas Cowboys.

The Eagles Throw Their Checkbook at Asomugha

1 of 5

If Jerry wants to sign cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, he’s going to have to give out Deion Sanders type of money. The Cowboys need help in the secondary if they have any hope of winning a Super Bowl.

They’ll need the assistance of a talented corner like Asomugha.

But, there are other teams in the mix for his services, and one of the worst things that may happen to Dallas is if Asomugha decides to sign with another NFC East team.

The Eagles will have to dish out the funds as well, but if they are willing to do so and Nnamdi finds them more attractive, then that may spell trouble for the ‘Boys in blue.

Michael Huff Returns to Oakland

2 of 5

Huff has made no secret of his want to be a Dallas Cowboy.

He’s from Irving, Texas and CBS sportswriter Jon Machota seems to think that he would be a wonderful fit in Dallas.

But if Huff is lured back to Oakland with the promise of a larger check, then the Cowboys may be, ahem, sol. They need help at the safety position, and Huff’s skill set seems to fit well in Dallas.

But there is always the possibility that he stays in Oaktown or chooses another city, and if so, that may spell disaster for the Cowboys.

Dallas Fails To Re-Sign Doug Free

3 of 5

Free was graded as one of the best offensive lineman for the ‘Boys last season and because of it, he’s in store for a grandiose type of payday.

The team has stated that Free is a priority, and everything will be done to re-sign the talented offensive lineman. But what if Free feels lowballed, or Jerry believes that he isn’t worth the type of money he’s commanding?

Free will be well within his rights to leave.

If so, the Cowboys offensive line will back into flux, and we may see more plays with Alex Barron instead of Doug Free.

Dallas Fails To Sign Any Key Free Agents

4 of 5

Dallas had an OK draft as they were able to pick up offensive lineman Tyron Smith and running back DeMarco Murray. But they still have holes to fill in the defensive backfield and the defensive line.

If Jerry is unable to convince any key free agents, like Huff, Asomugha, Ruud and cornerback Jonathan Joseph, to come to town, then it’s safe to say that free agency would be an unmitigated failure.

Jerry’s mind is on a Super Bowl, and without help in free agency, then his team may well end up on the couch again come February.

Losing Marcus Spears and Failing To Sign a Suitable Replacement

5 of 5

Here’s why allowing Marcus Spears to walk would spell disaster for Dallas.

No other player on the roster can produce like Spears, and if Dallas can’t fill his slot, then there is a Texas-sized gap left in the defensive line.

Spears was great at stuffing the run, and with games against running backs like LeSean McCoy, Frank Gore and Brandon Jacobs, the ‘Boys will need help at stopping the run.
