NFL Free Agency: Philadelphia Eagles and 5 Landing Spots for Plaxico Burress

Mick AkersJun 7, 2018

Plaxico Burress and his potential landing spot has been a hot topic this locked out offseason, and his list of potential suitors has grown since his release from prison in early June—which has had the Philadelphia Eagles at the head of the pack.

Where ever Burress lands his is going to be a game changer once he gets his play back to in-game speed, and the waiting period for whatever team nabs him will be well worth it.

Here's the list of the five potential teams who are in the best position to land Burress and the game changing ability that comes with him.

1. Philadelphia Eagles

1 of 5

As soon as Plaxico Burress was seen wearing a Philadelphia Phillies hat upon his release from prison, the sports world has been buzzing about the former NFC East rival switching sides and joining the Philadelphia Eagles.

Burress would make the Eagles already impressive receiver core that more impressive, and would give opposing teams nightmares trying to contain DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant and Buress if he so choses to sign with the Eagles.

With Jackson revealing his hope to play with Burress in a radio interview, and Eagles quarterback Michael Vick expressing his support of Burress going in a separate interview with the Herd, the Eagles should step in line behind their two stars and make a solid push at landing Burress.

2. Houston Texans

2 of 5

Plaxico Burress himself named a list of a select few that he would like to play for going forward and the Houston Texans is one of them.

Gushing about how good Matt Schaub has become and naming Arian Foster as a top five running back in the NFL in an interview with the NFL Network, Burress in Houston would make a lot of sense.

Playing alongside of Andre Johnson—who Burress called the top receiver in football—would make a solid one-two punch and give the ever improving Schaub another solid weapon to throw to. Burress would help spread out defenders and give Johnson more open spots to create game changing plays and vice-versa.

With the Houston Texans already on the brink of becoming serious contenders in the NFL, the addition of Burress would put them that much closer to being a perennial Super Bowl team.

3. New York Jets

3 of 5

Another team Plaxico Burress himself said he'd love to play for is the New York Jets.

Setting up a comfortable situation for himself, Burress could chose to stay in the area he has already lived in for the past few seasons and play for the Jets.

The Jets offer Burress some attractive offensive options—all thought they are not as attractive as the ones in Philly or Houston—and have one of the leagues best defenses to back them up.

Playing with the ever improving Mark Sanchez and pairing up with either Braylon Edwards or Santonio Holmes—as the Jets are set to lose one of the two to free agency if they pick-up Burress—the Jets breaking through and actually getting passed the AFC championship game this season could finally be realized.

4. Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears are in need of some some offensive power and Plaxico Burress would give them an ample boost.

In a recent interview with ESPN 1000 in Chicago, Urlacher said he would welcome Burress to the team, and said he could not see him doing anything but helping his team—not seeing his addition as any kind of distraction.

Though it has been said that Burress would not fit into Bears offensive coach Mike Martz's system of play, I feel he could fit into their offensive scheme as red-zone and third down threat, utilizing his size to extend drives and score touchdowns.

With Jay Cutler already equipped the speedy Devin Hester and emerging talents Johnny Knox and Earl Bennett already in place for the Bears, Burress would not need to shoulder a heavy load of offensive pressure and could help ease him back into the rigors of an NFL season.

New York Giants

5 of 5

With all the hype around everyone but the New York Giants, I feel that you can't count out Burress' former team in the running to land the wide receiver.

Throughout his prison stay, his ex-teammates went to visit Burress while locked up, showing that his team was still supporting him during his prison stint, which could factor in to his decision.

There have been various reports ever since Burress was sent to prison that the Giants will look in to bringing back Burress—who caught the game winning catch against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII in 2008—although they have cooled down as of late.

The Giants are in need of help in their offensive unit, and Burress—someone who is familiar to the game plan for the Giants—would be an obvious piece to fill the one of the voids they have at the wideout position.

The Giants and quarterback Eli Manning have an explosive play-maker in Mario Manningham in place now, and pairing him up with Burress could help the Giants get back to their Superbowl form of 2008.
