New Orleans Saints vs. San Francisco 49ers: Nawlins Headed for Frisco Bay

Randy SavoieSep 13, 2010

Anymore games like this and San Francisco head coach Mike Singletary may resort to dropping his pants again at halftime.

The road does not figure to get any easier as the 49ers play the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football following a 31-6 loss to Pete Carroll's Seattle Seahawks in the season opener.

Poor Alex Smith looked like he got the s*#t kicked out of him by the time it was all over.

The Niners should have seen this coming after ESPN's Mike Greenberg picked them to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl last Thursday morning.

When Greenberg picks you to win anything, well, that's never a good sign.

After Greenberg's prognostication,Michael Crabtree, owner of over 1,000 pair of shoes, denied being a diva and then said he doesn't even know what a diva is and the whole week went downhill from there.

Bill Walsh must be turning over in his grave.

Your grandfather's 49ers this definitely ain't cher—as they say down on the Louisiana bayou.

One of those sports' talk show hosts on WWL Radio in New Orleans (the guy who sounds like he flunked out of broadcasting school) said that if the Saints can stop Frank Gore and shutdown Vernon Davis they should win easily over these 49ers and I, for one, believe him.

When is the last time any of those guys were wrong about anything.

They may sound a little thick but they are usually dead spot on with their predictions.

I was reading that smartass who writes for the San Francisco Chronicle. He said: "This is supposed to be the Year of the Alex. Not Sunday. Smith missed high and low, up and away, and into the other team's arms twice to set up Seattle touchdowns...When the game was over, Smith couldn't even agree with coach Mike Singletary over why they couldn't get off plays without timeouts and penalties. The other 10 players on offense won't matter until Smith irons out his issues."

In retrospect, it is easy to see why Pete Carroll never offered Alex Smith a lucrative contract to play at USC. It was a wise decision on Carroll's part and I would even say a keen one. Carroll wasn't going to waste big money on a prep star who couldn't throw accurately.

They say gratitude is the least heartfelt of all the emotions.

That has never been a problem though for Mike Singletary.

Did Singletary pull down his pants and thank somebody for kicking his ass again?

Not this time. But he did express his heartfelt gratitude to the Seattle Seahawks.

"I want to very much tell Pete Carroll 'Thank you very much for kicking our tails.' " Singletary told the Chronicle, "it was good medicine and we're going to take it."

"You're a young football team, you win four preseason games, and you start to feel pretty good about yourself," Singletary said. "Maybe you begin to read your press clippings and think, 'Hey, we've got the division won.' Obviously, we don't."

If the 49ers keep this up, Singletary may become a target of David Letterman again, and, given Letterman's low ratings these days, it just doesn't get any worse than that.
