Dee Milliner Cut by Jets: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction
Three years after making Dee Milliner the ninth overall pick in the draft, the New York Jets are releasing the oft-injured cornerback.
ESPN's Field Yates reported—and Newsday's Kimberley A. Martin confirmed—that the Jets cut Milliner. Yates noted he is now placed in the waiver system, where all 31 other teams will have the chance to claim him on Thursday.
It's been a sharp and steep fall from grace for Milliner, who was regarded as one of the top prospects in the 2013 draft coming out of Alabama.
NFL.com's Mike Mayock ranked him as the No. 2 cornerback in his draft class, behind fellow bust D.J. Hayden.
Milliner struggled as a rookie, but by the end of 2013, he had showed some of the promise that made him a high draft pick, recording three interceptions and 15 passes defensed in 13 games, including 12 starts.
That was the height of Milliner's tenure with the Jets, though. He played in just three games during the 2014 season after tearing his Achilles tendon during an October matchup against the Denver Broncos.
Milliner started last season on the injured reserve list with the designation to return after undergoing wrist surgery in August. He returned to play in five games but didn't record a tackle or interception.
Last year, in redrafting the 2013 class, Khaled Elsayed of Pro Football Focus noted Milliner's injury woes made it difficult to give him a proper grade.
In addition to his injuries, it didn't help that Milliner had to adjust to a new coaching staff after the team fired former head coach Rex Ryan in 2014. New head coach Todd Bowles likes to utilize a lot of cornerbacks in his scheme, but Milliner's inability to stay healthy made him impossible to depend on.
At just 25 years old, Milliner has age on his side. While he needs to focus on getting back to full strength, another team will likely give him a shot because of his first-round pedigree and the promise he showed when he got substantial playing time.
