Keenan Robinson Comments on Redskins' Locker Room Dysfunction

Scott PolacekSep 20, 2016

New York Giants linebacker Keenan Robinson didn't sound surprised Tuesday while discussing potential issues inside Washington's locker room before Sunday's NFC East showdown.

Robinson played for Washington from 2012 to 2015 and said it's "the same old story" regarding his former team, per Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com. Raanan noted that Robinson delved into the finger-pointing that went on within the organization when he was a member of the defense:

"

When I was there, three out of four years, it was the same thing. Once they get down, they start pointing fingers. And that is true. That is what happens. And for the Redskins -- I've only been on one team before I came here, and that was them -- and all I saw was not the right way to handle it. I feel like they didn't handle it the right way when I was there. They may be handling it different now. But when I was there, they started pointing fingers, people started talking. That's how you get dissension in the locker room.

Robinson's comments come after Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk cited a source who said some of Washington's players have complained about quarterback Kirk Cousins after the 0-2 start, especially after he threw a critical interception in the red zone late in the team's 27-23 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

On Wednesday, Washington head coach Jay Gruden responded to Robinson's comments, via Tom Pelissero of USA Today:

When asked about Robinson's comments, DeAngelo Hall asked where Robinson was playing, adding, "I didn't even know he was on a team," per Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post

Cousins led Washington to a division crown in 2015 behind 4,166 passing yards and 29 touchdown throws, but he tallied only one touchdown against three interceptions in the opening two losses to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cowboys.

According to John Keim of ESPN.com, wide receivers DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon in particular have already expressed frustration with their team's signal-caller this year.

Washington's defense has also struggled and allowed 65 combined points in those two losses, even though it added 2015 Pro Bowl cornerback Josh Norman during the offseason. Robinson probably could have helped that group if he hadn't left as a free agent and signed a one-year deal with New York this offseason.

Raanan pointed out that the linebacker elected not to sign a long-term contract with Washington after a career year in 2014 (109 combined tackles, 1.5 sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery) because he didn't think it "was where he wanted to be for the next four or five years."

"I like it here better," Robinson said when comparing the two situations, per Raanan. He has eight combined tackles through the first two games for New York this season.

He will probably like it even better with the Giants if they beat Cousins and Washington in Week 3. New York is 2-0 and has a golden opportunity to move a commanding three games ahead of the defending division champs in the early going this year.
