Derrick Henry to Titans: Twitter Reacts as RB is Selected in 2016 NFL Draft

Joseph ZuckerApr 28, 2016

For the first time in nearly a decade, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner fell out of the first round of the NFL draft, but Derrick Henry didn't have to wait much longer to hear his name called.

The Tennessee Titans selected Henry with the 45th overall pick Friday, giving them the last two Heisman winners; they took Marcus Mariota second overall in last year's draft. Troy Smith is the last player to win the Heisman and subsequently not get selected in the first round. The Baltimore Ravens took the former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback 174th overall in 2007.

At Alabama, Henry looked like a man among boys, and even when he hits the NFL, his impressive size will make him stand out:

ESPN.com's Bill Barnwell isn't so sure drafting Henry was the right move for Tennessee given its other offseason business:

Yahoo Sports' Eric Edholm sees the selection as part of head coach Mike Mularkey's overarching plans:

Titans running back DeMarco Murray doesn't appear to be upset with the additional competition:

Here are some of the best reactions on social media to Henry heading to Tennessee:

The Atlanta Falcons snagged Devonta Freeman in the fourth round, while Le'Veon Bell and Cincinnati Bengals running back Giovani Bernard were both second-rounders. The Kansas City Chiefs struck gold with Jamaal Charles in the third round. Finding talented runners outside the first round is becoming easier and easier, and the Titans may have found nice value with Henry.

Slipping out of Day 1 will work in Henry's favor to a certain extent as well since he won't be burdened with the weight of expectation that comes with being a first-round draft pick. The narrative on Melvin Gordon's rookie season might have been slightly different if the San Diego Chargers hadn't spent the 15th overall pick to select him.

The Titans certainly have enough security at running back to cover for Henry should he fail to meet his potential in the NFL. The bigger question will be whether he'll get enough touches in Tennessee's offense to make a meaningful impact.
