Redskins Could Make Pick Available to Teams Seeking QB
Wednesday, April 20
Britt McHenry of ESPN reported Wednesday the Redskins are "open to trading back," thinking they would be able to find value in the second and third rounds. The source also told McHenry it could be prime territory for a team looking to trade up for quarterback Paxton Lynch.
This year's draft class is certainly characterized more by depth than top-end talent. That's why it wasn't a surprise to see the Tennessee Titans trade the No. 1 overall pick as part of a deal with the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a plethora of other selections.
If there isn't a player a front office truly loves, it makes a lot of sense to trade back so a team can get two or three players it likes instead.
Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan recently spoke with Bleacher Report's Jason Cole about the draft process. He believes recognizing talent is something a lot of people can do, but figuring out which prospects have the drive to become stars is the key:
"The tough part is figuring out the person. Is he a competitor? What's his toughness? What's his mindset? I've been around long enough, which is great because I've made a lot of mistakes, and I've learned from them, but what makes a guy average to good, good to great and great to exceptional?
"
In terms of the No. 21 pick, Washington could benefit from having needs where the draft class is deepest, such as at defensive line and wide receiver. McCloughan could move back and still have an opportunity to fill those voids with a player he may have considered in Round 1 anyway.
The other aspect of the ESPN report makes sense, too. Top quarterbacks Jared Goff and Carson Wentz are likely to come off the board inside the first 10 picks, but then, there will be a wait for Lynch. But nobody is sure how long that will be.
The Denver Broncos, who watched Peyton Manning retire and Brock Osweiler leave in free agency, are looming at the end of the first round, though. So if Lynch is on the board at No. 21, interested teams will probably start to get a bit antsy and look to move up.
As a result, the Redskins trading out of the first round to pick up additional picks elsewhere in the draft would be ideal. They may have to wait until draft day to make the move, however, since teams will want to know if Lynch, or whichever other prospect they prefer, is still there.
The only exception for Washington could be if inside linebacker Reggie Ragland is available. He fills a need, and it's one of the few positions without much depth. So he could make the team stay put, but otherwise, the trade talk should be quite active.
