NFL Free Agency 2016: Latest Rumors, Predictions on Where Big Names Will Land

Chris RolingMar 9, 2016

The NFL's most interesting game of dominoes begins Wednesday.

When the market opens at 4 p.m. ET, the biggest dominoes, chief among them Doug Martin, Adam Jones and many others, will start to fall. As a result, a flurry of odd patterns will unfold across the board, sending notable names every which way as teams move on to second and third options.

With seemingly more recognizable names on the market than usual as the league prepares for another deep draft class, the impending activity will prove difficult to track, though it won't lack for high entertainment value.

Before the action begins, let's take a look at some updated rumblings and nail down predictions for some of the biggest names making the rounds.

Mohamed Sanu's Market

Mohamed Sanu's potential is drawing plenty of interest.

Quite a few recognizable names dot the market this year, though former Cincinnati Bengals wideout Mohamed Sanu isn't one who would top many lists.

It's a shame, too, as Sanu is just 26 years old and would boast better stats and perhaps receive a bigger payday if he hadn't been mired in a run-first offense with a passing game headlined by A.J. Green for the past four years.

Alas, Terry McCormick of TitanInsider.com revealed that the Tennessee Titans will give Sanu the attention he deserves when the market opens:

Sanu's best season came in 2014 when fellow free agent Marvin Jones missed the season. The situation slapped Sanu as a starter, and he responded with 56 grabs for 790 yards and five touchdowns, though folks should understand that he has a strong versatility as a rusher and a guy who can throw passes when a trick play comes through the headset.

It makes sense that the Titans would have an interest. Dorial Green-Beckham is a work in progress, and there isn't much else in the way of reliable production behind him on a depth chart trying to help Marcus Mariota along.

Other teams will have an interest. The Cleveland Browns have come up, according to Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot. So have the Atlanta Falcons, as reported by ESPN.com's Vaughn McClure. But the Titans make the most sense, as they sound willing to pay a little more for a reliable guy like Sanu so that the front office doesn't have to worry about wideout again on draft day with picks that come early in most rounds.

With that outlook in mind, this pairing makes sense, especially if Sanu wants to go somewhere and prove he can be a top option.

Prediction: Sanu signs with the Titans

The Janoris Jenkins Sweepstakes

Janoris Jenkins is an odd guy to start a sweepstakes, as he's a rather polarizing player on the field.

Some love Jenkins' physical play, and it doesn't hurt that he's only 27 years old. It helps that he ranked as the No. 24 corner in the NFL at Pro Football Focus last season. Using those same metrics, though, he gave up some of the most touchdowns of any corner, coughing up five.

Based on the market, though, it seems teams won't have a problem writing a check for Jenkins. According to NFL Network's Rand Getlin, Jenkins is set to join the New York Giants:

ESPN's Adam Schefter followed with potential contract details.

Much can change before the market opens, of course. Bill Williamson of FanRag Sports hinted that folks should keep an eye on the Oakland Raiders:

Both destinations make sense. Oakland wasn't so hot against the pass last year, ranking 26th by allowing 258.8 passing yards per game. That was with Charles Woodson, who elected to hang up the cleats.

The Giants, though, ranked dead last in that same metric at 298.9. New York's depth chart is also in flux, and this seems like a situation where a franchise will overpay at one of the league's most important spots to get on somewhat stable footing again after whiffing for years in the draft.

Jenkins avoided the franchise tag in Los Angeles. He wants to go somewhere he's wanted, paid well and the guy. Already the top guy on the market since Carolina hit Josh Norman with a tag, the Giants will make the former North Alabama standout an offer he cannot refuse.

Other teams will keep gunning before the deadline, but this seems like the ideal fit for both sides.

Prediction: Jenkins signs with the Giants

The Brock Osweiler Situation

This time last year, most would have scoffed at the idea of Denver Broncos quarterback Brock Osweiler sitting as one of the most important names on the market.

It goes like this: Osweiler came in for an injured Peyton Manning this past season and showed hints of promise, completing 61.8 percent of his passes with 1,967 yards, 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. Manning retired after the Super Bowl win. Now, Osweiler should assume the starting role.

Except that last part just hasn't worked out. In fact, the longer things drag on, the more likely it seems the Arizona State product could go somewhere else.

NFL Network's James Palmer provided the latest update, and it's one that doesn't sound too good for Denver:

This isn't far behind a note from Mike Klis of 9News.com suggesting that the Houston Texans pose a serious threat to sign Osweiler.

Other teams surely have an interest, too. Osweiler isn't just a quarterback with pro experience, which in most situations trumps a rookie. He has live experience and learned for years behind Manning—and he hits the market when one of the weakest quarterback classes in a long time looks the league in the eye.

Osweiler will get the money he wants. The market is leverage. Denver simply cannot afford to start over at quarterback after grooming their project for so long and for this very scenario.

Look for Denver to cave. It's hard to imagine Osweiler really wants to go anywhere, either, not with the Broncos looking like a team poised to contend for a few more titles. It's a matter of who blinks first, though, and Denver has more to lose.

Prediction: Osweiler re-signs with the Broncos
