NFL Power Rankings: Week 16 Conference Standings and Latest Super Bowl Odds

Chris RolingDec 23, 2015

With two weeks of games left on the schedule, plenty remains undecided as the NFL continues its march to the 2015 season's Super Bowl.

On the AFC side, the New England Patriots sit cozy, but the rest mostly seem in flux with so many teams surging late. The NFC, led by the Carolina Panthers, sits much more defined ahead of the postseason, though how the wild card will shape up looks almost impossible to discern.

As always, Las Vegas has numbers to display how it feels about each team's pursuit of the Lombardi Trophy. Below, let's look at those paired with power rankings based on season-long results.

Highlighting Notable Lines

New York Jets (100-1)

What to do with the New York Jets?

This is a nice payout for a team not getting enough credit, but the situation looks bleak. New York doesn't have a choice but to beat the New England Patriots in Week 16 while hoping for a loss from other teams such as the Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs. If those teams and the Denver Broncos win while the Jets take a loss, New York's mathematically eliminated.

For head coach Todd Bowles, he wants his guys to only focus on what they can control.

"If the football gods deem that we are worthy, and somehow we win these last two games, maybe we will, maybe we won't (get in)," Bowles said, according to ESPN.com's Rich Cimini. "But you can't worry about it because you can't control it."

It's not as if the Jets can't beat the Patriots. They went to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, in Week 7 and fell in a 30-23 loss despite a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

New York has quietly won four games in a row behind strong play from Fitzpatrick and a defense that hasn't let any of the four victims post more than 20 points.

When it comes to the stuff outside of New York's control, Denver has a tough game against the Cincinnati Bengals, and Pittsburgh has to suit up for a divisional clash with the Baltimore Ravens. There's enough all around to encourage bettors to at least put a little down here on the chance the underdog roars from behind to make the playoffs, where anything is possible.

Cincinnati Bengals (22-1)

AJ McCarron played well in place of Andy Dalton last week.

The world isn't collapsing around the Cincinnati Bengals like some thought it might when starting quarterback Andy Dalton went down with an injury.

Instead, the team rallied around backup AJ McCarron in Week 15 for a 24-14 win against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi's Stadium in which arguably the league's most dangerous defense forced four turnovers.

The Bengals clinched a playoff berth with the win. Not even 48 hours later, the team received some good news about Dalton's progression, according to ESPN.com's Coley Harvey:

While it doesn't sound like Dalton will be back before the playoffs, it's good news. In the meantime, Cincinnati goes to Denver in Week 16 and might have a shot at the No. 2 seed in the conference before a season-ending duel with Baltimore.

It would be silly to suggest it's impossible for Cincinnati to upend Denver. The Bengals won last week without tight end Tyler Eifert (12 receiving touchdowns) while sitting wide receiver A.J. Green (eight) for most of the game. Anyway, last year it was the defense that carried the Bengals to an upset of Denver in December via four interceptions of signal-caller Peyton Manning.

Cincinnati's having a tough time with injuries right now, but all signs point in an encouraging direction, which makes the potential payout here quite attractive.

Green Bay Packers (12-1)

Of the teams with something left to fight for in the NFC, the Green Bay Packers might be the most interesting.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Co. have a playoff berth in hand but have yet to secure the NFC North thanks to the Minnesota Vikings hanging around at 9-5. The Packers took care of business against the Vikings in their first meeting in a 30-13 win in Week 11, but other concerns hog the spotlight—specifically, the struggling offense.

Wideout Randall Cobb touched on the main concern this week with SiriusXM NFL Radio:

Given the injuries plaguing the unit, Cobb only has 70 catches for 777 yards and six scores this year. Lead back Eddie Lacy has been inconsistent at best, rushing for 124 yards against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 14 then posting just 23 against the Oakland Raiders last week.

The globe's about to find out what the Packers are made of in Week 16 on the road against the Arizona Cardinals, a 12-win team with eight victories in a row. Rodgers and the Packers have to show up big before welcoming the Vikings to town to close the season.

With Rodgers, anything seems possible, of course. This line seems worth the buy, though it's important to keep in mind that it could swing in either direction in the coming weeks. Once the playoffs start, though, having this potential return while counting on Rodgers doesn't sound like such a bad deal.
