Week 16 NFL Picks: Over/Under Projections, Odds Advice and Line Spreads

Chris RolingDec 22, 2015

With the disparity between teams heading to the postseason and those that will watch from home growing, Week 16 looks like another slate set to feature a handful of riots.

Last week really showcased what the rest of the season will look like when mismatches come together. New England blew away Tennessee 33-16, Kansas City trounced Baltimore 34-14 and Seattle lambasted Cleveland 30-13, to name a few.

It's a fun environment for bettors, who usually can't get away with swinging for the fences on the over with so many large spreads.

Early Odds to Bet

Pittsburgh (-11.5) at Baltimore

The Baltimore Ravens earned a spot in the intro for good reason.

Baltimore, sans Joe Flacco, Justin Forsett, Steve Smith and many more, have now dropped consecutive games by a total of 69-20. The Ravens have four wins on the year, with three of them coming against pushovers in the form of San Diego, St. Louis and Cleveland teams.

The fourth? Pittsburgh.

Even that's deceptive, though. Pittsburgh had to trot out Michael Vick under center and took a loss in overtime. Since starting the season 2-2, Pittsburgh has gone on a 7-3 run with three in a row.

Last time out, Pittsburgh stormed back from a 27-13 deficit behind 16 catches for 189 yards and two touchdowns from Antonio Brown to take down an elite Denver Broncos defense and stay alive in the postseason race.

That unstoppable offense now hits the road to take on a Baltimore defense coughing up 25.7 points per game on average, a unit that has allowed the Cleveland Browns to score 27 or more points in each of two divisional contests this year.

Sometimes, one could suggest a heated divisional rivalry will end up close no matter who's missing, where it's played and what the weather decides to do.

This isn't one of those times.

Prediction: Steelers 36, Ravens 10

Cleveland at Kansas City (-14)

The Broncos, Buffalo Bills and Oakland Raiders are just a handful of teams that have been unable to stop the streaking Kansas City Chiefs on their eight-game tear.

The three-win Browns won't be the one to do it.

The Browns haven't beat a team with more than four wins this year and in their last six losses have allowed a minimum of 30 points to the opposing offense.

That sound is Alex Smith rubbing his hands together. His offense has posted 29 or more points five times over the eight-win streak, and he's personally thrown 10 touchdowns with just one pick over the span. For his part, though, Smith gives the credit to one of the league's hottest defenses.

"They've kind of got that mojo," Smith said, according to ESPN.com. "The defense, you see them kind of salivate, so to speak."

Two teams have scored 20 or more points against the Chiefs during their streak. With Johnny Manziel under center, the Browns don't have the firepower to put a major dent in the Eric Berry-led unit, especially not once they fall behind and have to collapse into a one-dimensional attack.

Prediction: Chiefs 35, Browns 14

Carolina (-7.5) at Atlanta

Bettors need to get all over this one in a hurry.

Atlanta's suddenly only a dog by about eight points here because…well, why? They snapped a six-game skid by beating the Jacksonville Jaguars?

While the Falcons sit at 7-7 and have plenty to play for, so, too, do the undefeated Carolina Panthers, bye secured or not.

According to ESPN.com's David Newton, the Panthers won't just stop trying when there are still benefits from winning more games: "Panthers coach Ron Rivera says as long as the game has meaning and value he won't rest players. He likes that this week's game has value in terms of clinching home field throughout."

Before the Falcons turned things around with a win in Jacksonville, they took a 38-0 whipping at the hands of these same Panthers.

There, Cam Newton threw for a trio of touchdowns, and the Panthers ran for 142 yards and two touchdowns while intercepting Matt Ryan twice and holding the Falcons to 54 rushing yards.

The rematch doesn't figure to be much different. Even against the Jaguars, Ryan only threw for a single score with an interception. Like they did the first time around, the Panthers can jump out ahead and then force Ryan into a predictable attack.

This one might go down in Atlanta. Ryan might have big-name recognition still. But the Panthers shut out the Falcons last time and still have yet to lose. Bettors know what to do.

Prediction: Panthers 34, Falcons 20
