Fantasy Football Rankings: Week 12 Big Board
Week 12 gives us our first 16-game slate since Week 3, but it also comes with three Thursday games because of the Thanksgiving holiday, so lineup decisions become a little tougher, especially if you’re dealing with injuries for players with weekend games.
When composing my rankings, the biggest things that jumped out to me were the matchups at the quarterback position. Other than Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer and New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning, the top-scoring fantasy quarterbacks or those in that conversation are dealing with tough matchups.
At the top of the heap is Tom Brady taking on the Denver Broncos, which is difficult enough at full strength, but the injury bug has hit the New England Patriots hard in recent weeks. Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers come off their bye and head to Seattle for a showdown with the Seahawks.
Other shaky matchups include Andy Dalton and the Cincinnati Bengals hosting the St. Louis Rams, Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys facing the undefeated Carolina Panthers, and Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons with an NFC showdown against the Minnesota Vikings.
On the flip side, the good matchups belong to some quarterbacks you’d consider only as streaming options. Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota is worth a look against the Oakland Raiders, Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston could add to last week’s five-touchdown performance when he takes on the Indianapolis Colts, and Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer comes back to a fantastic matchup with the New Orleans Saints.
The ongoing struggle of talent versus matchup can make or break your fantasy team, especially with playoff spots on the line this late in the fantasy regular season. Let’s try to make sense of it all for Week 12.
As always, these rankings will be updated throughout the week and right after inactives come down for the early-afternoon games Sunday.
Top 100: Go Big
1 of 7
I’ll be breaking down each position with players looking better than usual, players looking worse than usual, players to avoid and sleepers. Before we get into those, here are the teams I like as a whole for fantasy this week because of their matchups:
- Arizona Cardinals (at San Francisco 49ers)
- Houston Texans (vs. New Orleans Saints)
- New York Giants (at Washington Redskins)
- Detroit Lions (vs. Philadelphia Eagles)

Quarterbacks: Feast in the East
2 of 7
Better than usual
- Eli Manning, NYG: Considering how unreliable the quarterback position has been this season, finding consistent, solid play is more than enough to justify a weekly starter, which is exactly what Manning has been, especially over the last month. Now, he faces a Washington Redskins defense that’s allowed the fifth-most fantasy points to quarterbacks in the last four weeks.
Worse than usual
- Matt Ryan, Atl: In last week’s loss to the Indianapolis Colts, Ryan threw three interceptions en route to an ugly loss at home in a beatable matchup. The Falcons are home again this week hosting the Vikings, a much tougher matchup considering they’ve held QBs to just 893 passing yards and five touchdowns in their last four games.
- Andy Dalton, Cin: Before throwing for 315 yards last week, Dalton had gone four straight games without hitting the 250-yard mark. He’ll face a stiff challenge from the Rams in Week 12, as they’ve been a top-10 defense against fantasy quarterbacks in the last four weeks.
- Other: Tony Romo, Dal
Avoid
- Ryan Tannehill, Mia: Tannehill has just four touchdowns in his last four games and hasn’t thrown for more than 217 yards in the last two weeks. He’s been tough to trust and has to face the New York Jets on Sunday. After giving up at least 333 yards to quarterbacks in three straight games, the Jets have held their last two opponents to a total of 387 yards.
Sleepers
- Brian Hoyer, Hou: Hoyer is back from a concussion this week and draws the juicy matchup of the Saints on Sunday. The Saints have given up the most fantasy points to quarterbacks in the last four weeks. In the last four games, New Orleans has allowed at least 320 yards and three touchdowns to each of its opponents.
- Marcus Mariota, Ten: In the last four weeks, Mariota has been the 11th-best scoring fantasy quarterback and has a great chance to keep it up when he and the Titans host the Raiders this weekend. In the last month, Oakland has surrendered the eighth-most fantasy points to QBs.
- Other: Jameis Winston, TB

Running Backs: Feed Him More
3 of 7
Better than usual
- T.J. Yeldon, Jac: Yeldon has played at least 82 percent of the snaps in the last four games for the Jacksonville Jaguars and should be busy with a great matchup against the San Diego Chargers in Week 12. The Chargers have allowed at least 140 total yards to running backs in every single game this season.
Worse than usual
- Latavius Murray, Oak: Murray hasn’t been a top-15 fantasy running back in the last four weeks and heads to Tennessee for a tough matchup with the Titans on Sunday. They’ve held running backs to the seventh-fewest fantasy points in the last month.
Avoid
- Jeremy Hill, Cin: Don’t be fooled by Hill’s fantasy production in Week 11. He scored twice but has failed to rush for at least 65 yards in any game this season. Hill’s fantasy production has been completely touchdown-dependent, and he’s scored in only four games (three multi-score games).
Sleepers
- Ahmad Bradshaw, Ind: Last week, Bradshaw scored a pair of touchdowns and played a season-high 51 percent of the snaps, which outpaced Frank Gore’s 48 percent. Bradshaw has caught three touchdowns in the last two games and faces a Tampa Bay defense that’s given up 25 receptions for 195 yards and two touchdowns in their last four games. Plus, Gore is dealing with a knee/quad issue, so Bradshaw has a chance at a bigger role.

Wide Receivers: Above the Rest
4 of 7
Better than usual
- DeSean Jackson, Was: In one of his toughest matchups, Jackson came through with five receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown against the Panthers last week. There should be confidence that he'll keep it up against the Giants, as they’ve allowed the third-most fantasy points to wide receivers in the last four weeks.
- Golden Tate, Det: Tate is coming off one of his best performances of the season with eight receptions for 73 yards in Week 11 against the Raiders. On Thursday, the Philadelphia Eagles come to Detroit with a defense that’s given up the second-most fantasy points to wide receivers in the last month.
- Other: Amari Cooper/Michael Crabtree, Oak
Worse than usual
- Dez Bryant, Dal: Confidence in Bryant’s fantasy value is back on the rise, but it can’t be too high in this week’s matchup with the Panthers, as Bryant will likely see a lot of top cornerback Josh Norman. The Panthers have held wide receivers to just 41 receptions and three touchdowns in their last four games.
Avoid
- Leonard Hankerson, Atl: Hankerson may have scored last week, but he has just nine receptions since Week 5 and draws a tough matchup against Minnesota in Week 12.
Sleepers
- Marquess Wilson, Chi: With Alshon Jeffery battling a groin injury, the Chicago Bears may need more out of Wilson on Thursday night against the Green Bay Packers. Opposing wide receivers have scored the 11th-most fantasy points against Green Bay in the last four weeks.

Tight Ends: Top Cat
5 of 7
Better than usual
- Antonio Gates, SD: Gates was a massive disappointment last week, posting one reception for six yards against the Kansas City Chiefs, but, luckily, he has a favorable matchup with the Jaguars and a chance to bounce back. They’ve allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to tight ends in the last four weeks.
Worse than usual
- Eric Ebron, Det: Ebron failed to come through in Week 11 after dropping a sure touchdown against the Raiders, and the struggles may continue when he faces the Eagles on Thursday. Over their last three games, the Eagles have held tight ends to just 11 receptions for 103 yards and a touchdown.
Avoid
- Jacob Tamme, Atl: By the numbers, Tamme had the best possible matchup for a tight end last week against the Colts and managed just one reception for 16 yards. Following that up with a better game should prove to be difficult, as he matches up against a Minnesota defense that’s been a top-five unit against fantasy tight ends in its last four games.
Sleepers
- Crockett Gillmore, Bal: Injuries have decimated the Baltimore Ravens this season, but that’s made Gillmore a more important part of the offense and someone new starting quarterback Matt Schaub may look to lean on, especially this week against the Cleveland Browns. The Browns have yielded the third-most fantasy points to tight ends in the last four weeks.

Defense/Special Teams: Green Machine

Best options based on matchups
- New York Jets (vs. Mia): The Jets need a get-well week for their fantasy defense and should get one against the Miami Dolphins. Over the last four games, the Dolphins have yielded the most fantasy points to opposing defenses thanks to 14 sacks, three interceptions, one touchdown and three safeties.
- Carolina Panthers (at Dal): The Cowboys got quarterback Tony Romo back last week, but the turnovers from that position continued, as he threw two interceptions against the Dolphins. The Panthers will only make things tougher, as they come into this matchup as a top-three fantasy defense over the last four weeks.
- Kansas City Chiefs (vs. Buf): No fantasy defense has scored more points over the last month than the Chiefs thanks to 14 sacks and eight interceptions, so while the Buffalo Bills haven’t surrendered much to fantasy defenses, they could be in for a rough afternoon in Kansas City.

Kickers: You Gano It

Best options widely available on the waiver wire
- Chandler Catanzaro, Ari: I was surprised to see Catanzaro as widely available as he was coming into this week. He’s posted at least two field goals and four extra points in three straight games as a member of one of the best teams in the league. The Cardinals draw a fantastic and beatable matchup against the San Francisco 49ers this weekend, so it should be another busy day for Catanzaro.
