Fantasy Football Rankings: Week 9 Big Board
Last weekend gave us plenty of strong fantasy performances from big-name players, but it was also the worst weekend for injuries we’ve seen all year. If you survived the rash of injuries or came out victorious while having to face any of the New Orleans Saints and/or New York Giants, congratulations. If you didn’t, well, it’s just one week, and it’s time to move on quickly because the fantasy regular season is entering the stretch run.
The good news is Week 9 is shaping up to be another big week, especially through the air. Tom Brady and the New England Patriots should continue their onslaught against the Washington Redskins, Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers may end up in a possible shootout with Jay Cutler, and the Chicago Bears and Eli Manning can build on last week’s strong performance when the Giants face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The game I’m most intrigued by happens in Pittsburgh, where the Steelers will host the Oakland Raiders. Ben Roethlisberger struggled in his return from a knee injury last week but needs to get right quickly because he’ll have to be on his game to hang with Derek Carr and a Raiders offense that is legitimately dangerous. This game is chock-full of fantasy implications.
As a result of last week’s injuries, we’ll see if DeAngelo Williams can save fantasy seasons following the loss of Le’Veon Bell to a torn MCL. While Williams has already proved he can be a strong fantasy option, Chicago Bears running back Jeremy Langford has not, but he’ll get the chance to do so in a great matchup with the San Diego Chargers. Langford steps in for Matt Forte, as the veteran’s knee injury could keep him out multiple weeks, per ESPN's Chris Mortensen (via Rotoworld's Evan Silva).
It’s time to see where everyone stands heading into Week 9 as we take a look at my early rankings for every position on this week’s big board.
As always, these rankings will be updated throughout the week and right after inactives come down for the early-afternoon games Sunday.

I’ll be breaking down each position with players looking better than usual, players looking worse than usual, players to avoid and sleepers. Before we get into those, here are the teams I like as a whole for fantasy this week because of their matchups:
Cincinnati Bengals (vs. Cleveland Browns)
New York Jets (vs. Jacksonville Jaguars)
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (vs. New York Giants)
Chicago Bears (at San Diego Chargers)
New England Patriots (vs. Washington Redskins)
Atlanta Falcons (at San Francisco 49ers

Quarterbacks: Take to the Air
2 of 7
Better than usual
- Eli Manning, NYG: Coming off last week’s huge game against the New Orleans Saints, Manning has a great chance to build on that when he takes on the Buccaneers on Sunday. The Bucs have allowed the most fantasy points to QBs in the last four weeks.
Worse than usual
- Andrew Luck, Ind: The only way Luck has been able to scrape together decent fantasy performances is by coming through with garbage-time production. It’ll be tough to get even that against the Denver Broncos. No team has been better against fantasy QBs than the Broncos over the past four weeks and across the entire season.
Avoid
- Blake Bortles, Jac: Based on the numbers, the New York Jets have been one of the worst defenses against QBs in the last four weeks, but that includes a matchup with Tom Brady and their pitiful showing against Derek Carr last week. This is still a good defense and one that could give Bortles a lot of trouble.
Sleepers
- Jay Cutler, Chi: Cutler’s been better in reality than in fantasy, but he should be pretty busy against the Chargers on Monday night. The Chargers have allowed the seventh-most fantasy points to QBs over the past four weeks, and the Bears aren’t far behind them, so this could be a high-scoring matchup. Chicago could take to the air more without running back Matt Forte (knee).
- Jameis Winston, TB: If you’re streaming QBs, Winston is an option against a poor Giants defense. Following their terrible performance against Drew Brees and the Saints, they check in with the sixth-most fantasy points given up to QBs over the last month. While Tampa Bay should be able to run with plenty of success, Winston may need to throw more if the Giants have another offensive explosion like they did in Week 8.

Running Backs: Lead Buc
3 of 7
Better than usual
- Jeremy Hill, Cin: Last week, Hill out-touched Giovani Bernard 16-to-3 and could be even busier Thursday night with a great matchup against the Cleveland Browns. They’ve allowed the sixth-most fantasy points and 583 rushing yards to running backs over the last four weeks.
- Ronnie Hillman/C.J. Anderson, Den: Both Denver running backs had excellent fantasy performances in Week 8 and have a good chance to follow up with more production in Week 9, when they face the Indianapolis Colts. For all the hoopla about the offensive issues for the Colts, you can’t ignore how bad their defense has been. Over the last four weeks, opposing running backs have scored the fifth-most fantasy points against them thanks to 454 rushing yards, five rushing touchdowns and 27 receptions for 215 yards and a score.
- Others: Doug Martin, TB
Worse than usual
- T.J. Yeldon, Jac: Yeldon has played well, but he has a stiff test this weekend in a matchup with the Jets. Even with a poor performance against Latavius Murray and the Raiders in Week 8, the Jets remain a top-five run defense, allowing fewer than 13 fantasy points to RBs in the last four weeks.
Avoid
- None of note.
Sleepers
- LeGarrette Blount, NE: Following a quiet performance against the Jets in Week 7, Blount was busy against the Miami Dolphins in Week 8, rushing 17 times for 72 yards. After a strong start to the season, Washington has fallen apart on defense and comes into this week allowing the third-most fantasy points to running backs over the last month. While Dion Lewis is still the star of the Patriots backfield, Blount has a good chance to come through as an RB2 in a game the team should control with ease.
- Jeremy Langford, Chi: Matt Forte’s knee injury opens the door wide for Langford, and it couldn’t come at a better time for the rookie, as the Bears face San Diego. The Chargers are a bottom-12 defense against fantasy running backs, and they’ve allowed 443 rushing yards and three touchdowns in the last four weeks. If the Bears commit to Langford, he could be a legit RB2 with upside for Week 9.

Wide Receivers: More Than a Feeling
4 of 7
Better than usual
- Mike Evans, TB: The Buccaneers haven’t thrown the ball 30 times in any of their last three games, so Evans has been a hit-or-miss player, but he should be a hit this weekend in a great matchup with the Giants. In the last four weeks, the Giants have yielded the second-most fantasy points to wide receivers, and if Tampa Bay’s defense struggles, it may mean more volume out of necessity for Evans.
- Martavis Bryant, Pit: We know Antonio Brown is always looking good, but I wanted to spotlight Bryant against the Raiders this weekend because Oakland is tied with the Patriots for a league-high 59 receptions given up to wide receivers in the last four weeks. The Steelers should get back on track following an underwhelming performance against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 8.
Worse than usual
- T.Y. Hilton/Donte Moncrief, Ind: The Colts have struggled plenty all season no matter the matchup, but there’s little hope for their passing attack with the Broncos on the docket this week. Only the Seattle Seahawks have allowed fewer fantasy points to wide receivers in the last month. Lower expectations significantly for Hilton and Moncrief.
- Allen Robinson, Jac: Robinson has played at a high level all season, so that means he’ll likely see a lot of Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis on Sunday. Being stuck against Revis is an automatic downgrade for any receiver.
- Others: Randall Cobb/James Jones, GB, Travis Benjamin, Cle
Avoid
- Anquan Boldin/Torrey Smith, SF: Things are so bad in San Francisco that they’ve decided to bench quarterback Colin Kaepernick in favor of Blaine Gabbert. That’s reason alone to stay away from Boldin and Smith, but that decision is solidified when you see that the Atlanta Falcons are holding wide receivers to the third-fewest fantasy points in the last four weeks.
Sleepers
- Stevie Johnson/Malcom Floyd, SD: The Chargers lost wide receiver Keenan Allen (kidney) for the season, and with tight ends Antonio Gates (knee) and Ladarius Green (ankle) banged up, both Johnson and Floyd become even more important to their offense, which continues to post great fantasy production through the air thanks to quarterback Philip Rivers. Rivers is a big boost to their fantasy values, but so is a favorable matchup against the Bears.

Tight Ends: Safe Isn't Sorry
5 of 7
Better than usual
- Heath Miller, Pit: While the Raiders have shown improvement against tight ends in the last month, they’ve still allowed a touchdown to the position in all but one game. Miller is coming off one of his best games of the season and could be more important to the offense as a chain-mover and a red-zone threat with running back Le’Veon Bell (knee) out for the season.
Worse than usual
- Jordan Reed, Was: No team has given up fewer fantasy points to tight ends than the Patriots in the last four weeks, so there’s some concern for Reed, but that’s mostly because they haven’t allowed any touchdowns during that span. It’s only a slight downgrade for Reed.
Avoid
- None of note.
Sleepers
- Vernon Davis, Den: Davis hasn’t been fantasy-relevant since the 2013 season, but his stock jumped for the first time since then when he was traded to the Broncos this week. Davis gets an immediate upgrade at quarterback in Peyton Manning and finds himself with a great matchup against the Colts this weekend. They’ve allowed the third-most fantasy points to tight ends in the last month.

Defense/Special Teams: Stay on the High Horse
6 of 7
Best options based on matchups
- New York Jets (vs. Jac): After a poor showing against the Raiders last week, the Jets come back home to host the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jags have given up 11 sacks, five interceptions and the second-most fantasy points to defenses over the last month.
- New England Patriots (vs. Was): The Patriots have been one of the best defenses all season and get to pad their stats when quarterback Kirk Cousins and the Washington Redskins come to Gillette Stadium on Sunday. Washington has given up the ninth-most fantasy points to opposing defenses in the last four weeks.
- Cincinnati Bengals (vs. Cle): Over the last four weeks, the Browns have given up 13 sacks and are starting quarterback Johnny Manziel over the injured Josh McCown. The Bengals defense played a great game against the Steelers in Week 8 and should be ready to tee off against Manziel and the Browns in a short week.
- Atlanta Falcons (at SF): While the Falcons won’t get the pleasure of facing a Colin Kaepernick-led 49ers offense, they do get the satisfaction of taking on Blaine Gabbert instead. The 49ers have given up the 12th-most fantasy points and 14 sacks to opposing defenses in the last four weeks. The QB change won’t help them.
- Philadelphia Eagles (at Dal): Plenty of attention has been given to the struggles Philadelphia is having with its offense, but what’s being overlooked is a good defense ready to come after quarterback Matt Cassel and the Dallas Cowboys this week. The Eagles have been a top-four fantasy defense over the last month, and the Cowboys have given up the third-most fantasy points to defenses during that span.

Kickers: Take Your Chances
7 of 7
Best options widely available on the waiver wire
- Connor Barth, TB: Since rejoining the Buccaneers a few weeks ago, Barth has been one of the hottest kickers in all of fantasy football, and he could be in for a busy day against the Giants, as they have one of the worst defenses in the league. He’s hit three field goals in each of his three games with Tampa Bay.
- Blair Walsh, Min: The Vikings keep winning, and Walsh stays busy. He has 11 field goals in his last three games and hasn’t missed since Week 4. Minnesota’s offense has been just good enough to give him chances but not good enough to score a lot of touchdowns, and we should see more of the same against a good St. Louis Rams defense in Week 9.
