Fells Undergoing Another Surgery
Monday, Dec. 7
Fells posted on Instagram as he prepared to go under the knife once more:
He last posted on Instagram Nov. 5 to let fans know he was undergoing his eighth surgery:
The Nov. 5 procedure was one Fells and his doctors planned on, as Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported on Oct. 19:
"But sources informed of his condition say his scans and cultures have come back "looking good" and there is a real chance he's released from the hospital this week.
In addition, doctors now believe they will be able to save Fells' foot. Amputation had been a serious concern throughout the process. ...
At one point, there were the gravest of concerns for Fells, whose infection crept into his lungs. But finally the doctors got it under control, the foot looks clean, and the infection has not returned.
At least two more surgeries are scheduled, mostly to ensure that the infected area is clean, properly medicated and washed out. The infected bone has been removed, and antibiotics are treating his lungs.
When he is allowed home (Fells is not contagious), he'll have a nurse and physical therapist for several months.
"
After his fifth procedure, Rapoport reported Fells did not have a fever on Oct. 11 for the first night in 10 days after he received new medication. On Oct. 11, Rapoport reported Fells was placed in the intensive care unit on Oct. 9, but was then "moved to a private room to have a nurse focus solely on his care." He added:
"Fells has had five surgeries, according to a person with knowledge of his condition. More are coming, as doctors try to stave off further infection. As of Saturday night, they were fighting to save his foot, which is at risk given the nature of the infection. ...
The situation arose, the source said, when Fells suffered a toe injury, then an ankle injury. To treat it, Fells was given a cortisone shot. After a week of ankle and foot pain, Fells' wife took him to the emergency room on Oct. 2 with a 104-degree temperature. There, they found his ankle was infected with MRSA, a dangerous staph infection that is resistant to many antibiotics.
With doctors hoping to avoid amputating his foot, the more urgent fear is that the MRSA has gotten into the bone and that it could travel into his blood. That could have the gravest of consequences.
