Fantasy Football Rankings: Week 4 Big Board
Are you ready to live a fantasy life without the New England Patriots?
As we dive into Week 4, we do so without the services of Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman. Oh, and the Tennessee Titans are off too, so the Marcus Mariota show goes on hold and the resurgence of Kendall Wright has to wait a week.
Meanwhile, we push forward trying to make sense of it all, and by all, I mean the long list of significant injuries to top players we’ll be dealing with throughout the week. The Buffalo Bills could be without running back LeSean McCoy (hamstring) and wide receiver Sammy Watkins (calf). The New York Jets need to get running back Chris Ivory (quad/groin) and wide receiver Eric Decker (knee) back. The Miami Dolphins need to get their offense back on track. That's just the AFC East.
We could be looking at the return of Houston Texans running back Arian Foster (groin), Chicago Bears wide receiver Alshon Jeffery (hamstring) and New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz (calf/knee), so it’s not all bad.
However, the running back rankings will likely see another week of changes up until game time. The Philadelphia Eagles are hoping to have DeMarco Murray (hamstring) back, and the Seattle Seahawks hope Marshawn Lynch (hamstring) can play after barely contributing last week.
Unfortunately, I’ve learned to expect more injuries that haven’t been reported to reach the surface during practices this week. As always, understand that the rankings for each position are put together to the best of my ability with the limited injury information we have early in the week. They’ll go through multiple changes as we learn more from practice reports.
I can't stress enough how important it is to wait on making lineup decisions until the last possible moment. Setting your lineup early in the week won't win you many fantasy matchups.
As always, these rankings will be updated throughout the week and right after inactives come down for the early games Sunday.
Top 100: Pack It On

I’ll be breaking down each position with players looking better than usual, players looking worse than usual, players to avoid and sleepers. Before we get into those, here are the teams I like as a whole for fantasy this week because of their matchups:
Baltimore Ravens (at Pittsburgh Steelers)
Buffalo Bills (vs. New York Giants)
Oakland Raiders (at Chicago Bears)
Indianapolis Colts (vs. Jacksonville Jaguars)
Green Bay Packers (at San Francisco 49ers)
Seattle Seahawks (vs. Detroit Lions)

Quarterbacks: Changing Luck
2 of 7
Better than usual
- Andrew Luck: Coming into Week 4, Luck hasn’t scored enough points to rank among the top 20 quarterbacks, but he’ll have a chance to move up against the Jacksonville Jaguars, as they’ve allowed the 10th-most fantasy points to QBs.
- Andy Dalton: With a scorching start, Dalton has been outscored by only Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady this season, and he has a great chance to remain a top-five QB when he faces the Kansas City Chiefs, the worst defense against fantasy QBs this season.
- Tyrod Taylor: You shouldn’t need much convincing when it comes to playing Taylor, as he’s a top-five QB in fantasy points coming into this week, and he'll likely look even better against a beatable New York Giants defense this weekend.
- Others: Aaron Rodgers
Worse than usual
- Ryan Tannehill: Tannehill was supposed to make the leap into fantasy superstardom this season, but we’re still waiting for him and the Dolphins to get it together. Don’t expect that to happen against the Jets. They’ve been the second-best defense against fantasy QBs.
Avoid
- Teddy Bridgewater: Bridgewater isn’t even a top-25 QB through the first three weeks, and he’ll have a tough time moving up against the top-ranked defense when it comes to fantasy points allowed to QBs, the Denver Broncos.
- Matthew Stafford: Stafford has scored just 1.8 fantasy points more than Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett. You won’t see any improvement when he faces the Seahawks on Monday night. They’ve allowed the 10th-fewest fantasy points to QBs this season.
Sleepers
- Derek Carr: Carr may not be a sleeper anymore, but if you’re still in doubt, it would be wise to roll with the 12th-best fantasy QB this season when he takes on the Chicago Bears, who have allowed the eighth-most fantasy points to QBs.
- Joe Flacco: Thursday games aren’t always fun to watch, and Flacco is only the 20th-best fantasy QB coming into this week, but he could be in for a shootout against a Pittsburgh Steelers defense that is the seventh-worst against QBs through three games.
- Blake Bortles: Bortles failed to produce in the blowout loss to the New England Patriots last week, but he should have a chance to rebound against the struggling Indianapolis Colts. They’ve been average against QBs and could put up enough points to force Bortles to the air pretty often in Week 4.

Running Backs: It May Take All Day
3 of 7
Better than usual
- Joseph Randle: Randle absolutely lit up the Atlanta Falcons last weekend and has locked down the lead back spot in Dallas. With Brandon Weeden at QB, you know the Cowboys will feature Randle once again in an average matchup against the New Orleans Saints.
- Mark Ingram: Much like Randle is important to the Cowboys because of their less-than-ideal QB situation, Ingram should be an active part of the Saints’ game plan, especially because the Cowboys have allowed the eighth-most fantasy points to RBs.
- Frank Gore: After a slow start, Gore is back on track with the 22nd-most fantasy points among RBs this season. He should roll right along with plenty of success against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 4. They’ve given up the sixth-most fantasy points to RBs so far.
- Others: Eddie Lacy
Worse than usual
- Devonta Freeman: Following a breakout performance in a great matchup with the Cowboys, the RB with the second-most fantasy points in Week 3 draws a much tougher matchup against a Houston Texans defense that’s allowed the ninth-fewest fantasy points to RBs.
- Jeremy Hill/Giovani Bernard: Neither Hill nor Bernard had strong fantasy production last week, and it won’t get any easier when they face the Chiefs on Sunday. Their defense has held RBs to the fourth-fewest fantasy points in the first three weeks.
- Matt Jones/Alfred Morris: We’re already trying to forget Jones’ fumble on his way into the end zone against the Giants last week, but he may have trouble making up for it against a surprisingly stout Eagles run defense Sunday. Only five teams have allowed fewer fantasy points to RBs.
- Others: Ameer Abdullah, Todd Gurley
Avoid
- Doug Martin: That comeback season for Martin isn’t going so well. He’s the No. 50 fantasy RB and has just 20.8 fantasy points compared to 26.9 fantasy points for teammate Charles Sims. This weekend’s matchup against the Carolina Panthers isn’t a great one, but you’d be avoiding Martin no matter what in Week 4.
- Lamar Miller: Miller played through his ankle injury in Week 3 but ended up with just seven carries, giving him a total of 30 on the season. The Dolphins have not committed to the run and will have a difficult time doing so against the Jets this week. The Jets are a top-eight defense against fantasy RBs.
Sleepers
- Karlos Williams: If you’re asking about using Williams in Week 4, the answer is a strong yes. McCoy is expected to rest until he gets healthy, and part of that is because Williams has played so well. He’s a top-15 fantasy back through the first three weeks of the season and should have a busy afternoon against an average Giants defense.
- Melvin Gordon: Gordon has dealt with a sharing situation along with Danny Woodhead in the early part of the season, but he had more touches than the veteran in last week’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings. He has a chance to play an even bigger role this week against a vulnerable Cleveland Browns defense that got crushed by Raiders running back Latavius Murray in Week 3.

Wide Receivers: Silver into Gold
4 of 7
Better than usual
- Amari Cooper: For some reason, I took a lot of questions on whether to start Cooper last week even after he posted seven receptions, 109 yards and touchdown in Week 2. He followed that with eight receptions for 134 yards and made the Browns top cornerback, Joe Haden, look pedestrian on multiple occasions. Cooper is an automatic start from now until the end of his career and gets a boost with this week’s matchup against the Bears. They’ve allowed the eighth-most fantasy points to WRs.
- Keenan Allen: Allen bounced back in Week 3 after failing to live up to high expectations in Week 2. The Browns are giving up the ninth-most fantasy points to wide receivers, so there’s no concern about the matchup for Allen.
- Others: A.J. Green, Randall Cobb
Worse than usual
- Jarvis Landry: If you drafted Landry to be a solid WR2, he’s obliged with 50.9 fantasy points, making him a top-20 option for the first three weeks. He gets downgraded this week because the Dolphins offense is not playing well and he comes into a tough matchup against a Jets defense that’s been in the top 10 when it comes to WR fantasy points allowed. Lower expectations for Landry.
- Calvin Johnson/Golden Tate: For the second straight week, you have to downgrade Johnson and Tate because of the matchup. Last week, they struggled to get anything going against the Broncos. This week, they face a top-10 pass defense in the Seahawks. Don’t trust Stafford to come through in such a bad spot.
- Others: Mike Evans
Avoid
- Roddy White: White has one target and zero catches in the last two weeks. Not only should he be out of your lineup, but he should probably be off your fantasy team as well. Leonard Hankerson seems to have moved at least even with, if not past, White in the pecking order for Atlanta’s passing game. White won’t get any help getting back on track when he faces a Texans defense that’s held WRs to the eighth-fewest fantasy points.
Sleepers
- Marvin Jones: If you picked up Jones coming into Week 4 hoping he could add to his strong start, you should be in for another productive outing when he takes on Kansas City. The Chiefs have the worst pass defense in the league and have allowed the most fantasy points to QBs and WRs.
- Michael Crabtree: Crabtree has received at least eight targets in his first three games with the Raiders, so while Cooper is on the verge of breaking out in a big way, Crabtree has maintained an active role in the offense. The Bears are giving up the eighth-most fantasy points to WRs and could pay extra attention to Cooper. Oakland’s offense is strong enough to support two fantasy-relevant WRs.
- Others: James Jones

Tight Ends: Life Without Gronk
5 of 7
Better than usual
- Jimmy Graham: Graham hasn’t lit it up over the first three weeks of the season, but he’s been productive enough to check in as the eighth-best fantasy TE in terms of total fantasy points. As the only reliable options for the Seahawks in their passing attack, he won't have much trouble against a Lions defense that’s surrendered the sixth-most fantasy points to TEs.
- Martellus Bennett: If you’re not a believer in quarterback Jimmy Clausen, you may be moving right past this blurb on Bennett. After putting up just four receptions for 15 yards last week, Bennett has a chance to post big numbers in the easiest matchup for fantasy TEs this season when he takes on the Oakland Raiders.
Worse than usual
- Jordan Reed: Reed has at least six receptions and 60 yards in his first three games, so you’ll likely have him in your lineup when the Washington Redskins take on the Eagles. Lost in the struggles of the offense has been the strong play of Philadelphia’s defense. Only the Ravens have allowed fewer fantasy points to TEs.
Avoid
- Jordan Cameron: Cameron played through a groin injury in Week 3 but caught just three of eight targets for 16 yards and is barely a top-20 fantasy TE through the first three games. If that’s not reason enough to sit him, know that he’ll be facing a Jets defense that’s been in the top three against fantasy TEs.
- Heath Miller: Miller is just outside the top 12 TEs in fantasy points this season. Unfortunately, the Steelers are turning to quarterback Michael Vick after the knee injury suffered by Ben Roethlisberger last week. The situation only gets worse when you find out the Ravens are the toughest team to score fantasy points on for TEs.
Sleeper
- Charles Clay: A healthy Clay is usually a productive Clay, which is exactly what we saw in last week’s win over the Dolphins. With Watkins battling a calf injury and McCoy also in danger of missing the Week 4 matchup with the Giants, Clay becomes that much more important in a great matchup.

Defense/Special Teams: Feast on Bad Quarterbacks
6 of 7
Best options based on matchups
- Green Bay Packers: You shouldn’t need much convincing to play the Packers this week against the 49ers. Following a pair of pick-sixes and four total interceptions by quarterback Colin Kaepernick, the 49ers have allowed the most fantasy points to defenses in the first three games of the season.
- Carolina Panthers: The Panthers look like they’ll be in the hunt for the NFC South all year, and following a solid victory against the Saints last week, they’ll take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this weekend. The Bucs have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to opposing defenses and have only gotten better with the acquisition of DE Jared Allen from the Bears to replace DE Charles Johnson (hamstring, designated-to-return injured reserve).
- Arizona Cardinals: The Cardinals have a good defense, but Kaepernick made them look great with a pair of pick-sixes. There’s no concern about facing the St. Louis Rams this week, as quarterback Nick Foles has thrown just 87 passes with two touchdowns and an interception. The Rams have surrendered the eighth-most fantasy points to defenses.
- Seattle Seahawks: Are you excited about Seattle's defense facing the Lions? You should be! Not only do the Seahawks have the third-best fantasy defense through three games, but they also get to take on a Lions team that has failed to show any consistency on offense, whether it’s running or receiving. Play Seattle’s defense with confidence.

Kickers: The Air Up There
7 of 7
Best options widely available on the waiver wire
- Josh Brown: Brown has been outscored by only Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski so far this season, and that’s been by just one point (40-39). The Bills should slow down the Giants, so touchdown opportunities could end up being more field-goal attempts for Brown.
- Chandler Catanzaro: The Cardinals have one of the best offenses in the league, so Catanzaro has been a top-12 option even with just two field goals on the season. The scoring should continue against the Rams, and even if it doesn’t, Catanzaro is a good enough kicker to handle more field-goal chances with success.
