Stevie Brown Cut by Giants: Latest Comments and Reaction
Stevie Brown's return to the New York Giants did not last long, with the team parting ways with the veteran defensive back Monday.
Brown was made available late in the preseason after the Houston Texans, who signed him in May, released him. The five-year veteran previously played for the Oakland Raiders, Indianapolis Colts and the Giants. New York agreed to terms with Brown back on Aug. 31.
Tania Ganguli of ESPN.com provided details of why the Texans decided to release him:

It was a strategy that seemed to work well for Brown, with the Giants seeking depth in the secondary. New York lost four defensive backs in one preseason game against Cincinnati, with safety Mykkele Thompson suffering a torn Achilles. However, he did not do enough to impress during his brief time back in New York.
A torn ACL suffered in a preseason game two years ago seemed to alter Brown's career trajectory. He was coming off a stellar 2012, finishing tied for second in interceptions (eight), forcing two fumbles and adding 11 passes defended.
After missing the entire 2013 season, he did appear in all 16 games for the Giants last year and made eight starts without recording an interception with 30 tackles.
Despite the lack of statistical production, Pro Football Focus (via Nick Powell of NJ.com) had Brown producing a plus-2.3 rating against the run.
Running situations would seem to be Brown's best role moving forward, as Powell also noted opposing quarterbacks completed 70.3 percent of their passes with a 152.6 rating when looking in the safety's direction.
In the right scheme, Brown will be a valuable asset. He may not be the dynamic playmaker who will finish near the top of an interception leaderboard, but the versatile safety is a big hitter who isn't afraid to attack at the line of scrimmage.
