Super Bowl Prop Bets 2013: Early Odds and Payout Breakdown

Patrick ClarkeJun 1, 2018

Super Bowl XLVII is finally set. It will be the AFC champion Baltimore Ravens taking on the NFC champion San Francisco 49ers in New Orleans on Feb. 3, 2013.

The early spread out of Vegas has the Niners favored by 4.5 points. But aside from picking a winner and final score, bettors can place a wager on tons of propositions, from the outcome of the coin toss to who will take home Super Bowl MVP honors.

Here we'll break down the latest prop bet odds and payouts.

*All betting info according to Sportsbook.com

Coin Toss

1 of 5

One of the most popular prop bets during the Super Bowl takes place before the game even begins.

The coin toss, whether heads or tails, is a 50-50 bet and one of the most common pregame events bettors often place wagers on. The coin has come up heads the last four Super Bowls, and five of the last six.

Before last year's Super Bowl, the NFC had won 14 straight coin tosses, dating back to Super Bowl XXXII in 1998.

Tails (-105)

Ravens (-105)

49ers (-105)

Prediction

The odds are that if you flip a coin 100 times it should end heads up 50 times, and tails up 50 times.

With the coin having come up heads four straight times at the Super Bowl in the last four years, I'd go with tails in 2013. As far as which team wins the toss, the AFC is due to win it for a second straight year.

The NFC's reign of coin toss victory has lasted long enough.

Score Bets

2 of 5

Beyond the final score, bettors can place wagers on tons of different scoring scenarios for Super Bowl XLVII. From betting on which team will score first, to the halftime score, the possibilities are seemingly endless.

Although some bets are 50-50, like picking which team will score first, others are much more involved, like whether a team will score in the opening minutes or how the first score will come, be it via touchdown, field goal, safety, etc.

Prediction

Given how talented both of these defenses are, you have to like the first score of the game to come on a field goal in the red zone rather than a touchdown. If I had to pick a team to score first, it would be the 49ers. Both teams have given up points and gone down early in their recent playoff wins, but I anticipate Baltimore's offense will have the slower start.

If I had to pick a team to score last though, it would be the Ravens. Baltimore boasts more big-play threats and a big-arm quarterback in Joe Flacco. If they need to make a drive late, I have more faith in them doing so and getting on the board.

MVP Winner

3 of 5

One of the more easier bets to wager on is predicting who will come away with Super Bowl MVP honors this year.

It should be noted that five of the last six Super Bowl MVPs have been quarterbacks from the winning team. Plus, a quarterback has been named Super Bowl MVP 25 times out of 46 championship games.

Only once has a player from the losing team ever won Super Bowl MVP honors. That was Dallas Cowboys linebacker Chuck Howley in Super Bowl V in 1971.

Odds and Payout Info

Joe Flacco (+200)

Ray Rice (+1000)

Aldon Smith (+2500)

Justin Smith (+2500)

Patrick Willis (+2500)

David Akers (+5000)

LaMichael James (+5000)

Randy Moss (+5000)

Prediction

I like Joe Flacco to come away with Super Bowl XLVII MVP honors. The award usually goes to the winning quarterback, and I like that to be Flacco. He and the Ravens play their best football as underdogs, and that's exactly what they'll be this February against the 49ers.

If not Flacco, I think the MVP goes to Ray Lewis, who has played a mighty role in Baltimore's dramatic run this winter.

Player to Score First Touchdown

4 of 5

Another popular bet is picking which player will score the first touchdown of Super Bowl XLVII. Offensive players are always favored in this category, but many factors come into play.

You would be wise to crunch the numbers, analyze the stats and make an informed bet in this case. Although it's an unpredictable bet, it can be quite fun.

At least until the game's first touchdown.

Odds and Payout Info

Frank Gore (+500)

Ray Rice (+600)

Michael Crabtree (+1000)

Colin Kaepernick (+1000)

Torrey Smith (+1000)

Anquan Boldin (+1200)

Vernon Davis (+1200)

Dennis Pitta (+1200)

Bernard Pierce (+2000)

LaMichael James (+2000)

Jacoby Jones (+2000)

Randy Moss (+2000)

Delanie Walker (+2000)

Joe Flacco (+2500)

Vonta Leach (+4000)

Ed Dickson (+5000)

Anthony Dixon (+5000)

Ted Ginn Jr. (+5000)

Prediction

I agree with the oddsmakers here. Frank Gore stands out as one of the top candidates to score the game's first touchdown. The 49ers will be looking to pound him early on, and if San Francisco gets down in the red zone, it will likely hand the ball off to Gore more than once.

Colin Kaepernick is also a good play here. He can run and pass, making him a solid threat to score the game's first touchdown.

Margin of Victory

5 of 5

Another interesting bet is a simple one: margin of victory. It's never easy to predict who will win and how much they will win by, but the safest best is to keep the margin of victory small.

The last two Super Bowl winners have won by four and six points, respectively, with only one winner in the past five years winning by double digits or more (New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV).

Odds and Payout Info

49ers win by 1-3 points (+500)

49ers win by 4-6 points (+550)

49ers win by 7-10 points (+450)

49ers win by 11-13 points (+1000)

49ers win by 14-17 points (+800)

49ers win by 18-21 points (+1500)

49ers win by 22 or more (+800)

Ravens win by 1-3 points (+650)

Ravens win by 4-6 points (+800)

Ravens win by 7-10 points (+700)

Ravens win by 11-13 points (+1500)

Ravens win by 14-17 points (+1200)

Ravens win by 18-21 points (+2500)

Ravens win by 22 or more points (+1500)

Prediction

I've already mentioned that I like the Ravens in this matchup, but as far as the margin of victory is concerned, I like them to win by six. The last two Super Bowls have been decided by a combined 10 points, an average of five, which leads me to believe the Ravens win a closer game.

It just won't be quite as close as many, including the oddsmakers, think it will be.
