2012 NFL Draft: In a Perfect World the Houston Texans Select...

Nate DunlevyJun 7, 2018

All this week, I'll be looking at whom AFC South teams would take if everything broke their way.

Teams should always take the best available player, regardless of need, but every once in a while the perfect "need" player is also the best player available. Obviously, Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III are not going to fall to the back of the first round, so we'll try to focus on players that could realistically land near where each team is drafting.

The Houston Texans' hopes of advancing deep in the playoffs ended against the Baltimore Ravens defense last January, but in reality, they ended before that. Injuries to Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson (among others) grounded an elite passing attack that could have been Super Bowl worthy.

Johnson and Schaub are at the heart of the Texans' worries and dreams for the 2012 season. Both are among the best players at their positions, but neither have had a strong history of staying healthy. Both have missed significant time due to injuries in three of the past five years. The Texans' biggest draft need may not even be on the field at all. Maybe they just need an elite medical staff to keep their biggest stars patched up.

Assuming Trapper John, M.D. is not on Mel Kiper ,Jr.'s big board this year, the perfect world solution for the Texans will surely come on the offensive side of the ball. While Johnson is an athletic freak, their other wideouts are average at best. Tackle is a bigger need, but if an elite receiver falls to Houston at 26, there's no way it can pass on him.

Waco, Texas, isn't anywhere near Houston, but in Texas it qualifies as right next door. Baylor wideout Kendall Wright is projected in most mocks to go in the early 20s, but it's possible to see him falling just a bit to the Texans. Wright is slight at just 5'10" but has burner speed and big-play ability. He would be a nice complement to the hulking Andre Johnson, who is four inches and nearly 25 lbs. heavier.

Wright would be an instant upgrade to Kevin Walter or Jacoby Jones and help the Texans offense stay vertical. When paired with a punishing run attack, the double deep threats of Johnson or Wright would give the Texans the best long-ball offense in the AFC.

Tackle would still be a need in Houston, but if a talent like Wright falls even a few spots, the Texans will have to grab him.
