Matt Flynn Rumors: Latest Buzz on One of the NFL's Most Sought Quarterbacks

John RozumJun 3, 2018

Aside from Peyton Manning and Drew Brees, Matt Flynn is a hot commodity in regards to free-agent quarterbacks as well.

However, Flynn has gone somewhat unnoticed thanks to the NFL draft and prospects such as Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III. So what's likely in store for Flynn?

Well, here's a look at some franchises that could definitely use his services, but the question remains: will they pursue him?

Miami Dolphins

Miami has a new head coach in Joe Philbin who, for the past five seasons, was the offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers.

Matt Flynn has been the backup quarterback to Aaron Rodgers since his rookie season in 2008 and now has proven that he's worthy of an opportunity to start in the NFL. Well, the Dolphins have Matt Moore as their current signal caller, and he had a respectable season after taking over for Chad Henne.

Here, we would see a quarterback competition through training camp between Moore and Flynn as both are capable of leading the Dolphins. With an improved ground game and decent receiving corps led by Brandon Marshall, Miami has a lot of potential in 2012.

As for Flynn, Philbin has seen first-hand the past four seasons how much the guy has developed in practice and games. And in an article by Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, considering Peyton Manning over Flynn should not happen:

"

It means the Philbin hiring, done in part to bring Green Bay’s culture and approach to Miami, is not being maximized because the Packers would never consider a move like this. In fact, the Packers let an aging quarterback go for a younger one.

"

Do the Dolphins pursue Matt Flynn? Yes

Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins no doubt need a quarterback. Neither Rex Grossman nor John Beck is the answer, and bringing in someone, anyone, via draft or free agency would at the very least bring change and a sense of hope.

Well, Matt Flynn was one of the few targets for the Redskins in early February. Fast-forward to late February, though, and things changed. According to Mike Jones of the Washington Post, Washington was eyeing the draft:

"

The Washington Redskins are prepared to part with two first-round draft picks, plus other selections in the early and middle rounds, to secure the St. Louis Rams’ No. 2 pick in April’s draft and land Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III, according to people with knowledge of the situation.

"

Although Flynn would be an upgrade for the Redskins, he wouldn't be an upgrade like Robert Griffin III. For one, RG3 is much more mobile and has a stronger arm. Obviously he lacks the NFL experience by comparison; however, it's not like Flynn has an incredible amount either.

Still, all this obviously remains to be seen, but Washington at the moment appears to be the front-runners to trade with the St. Louis Rams

Do the Redskins pursue Matt Flynn? No

Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns are in an interesting situation since they could use an upgrade at quarterback; however, they need to improve more at receiver if anything else.

And according to the Columbus Dispatch, the Browns are interested in Flynn, but not wholeheartedly:

"

The Browns are not expected to make a big pitch for Flynn, who will command a huge salary and is linked to Miami, where former Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin is the new head coach.

"

To some extent, this comes as a surprise since the Browns may not trade up with St. Louis. According to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Cleveland does not want to lose their other first-round selection:

"

Cleveland (No. 4 pick): The Browns are unwilling at this point to include their second first-round pick, No. 22, as part of any trade package with the Rams.

"

So does this mean the Browns are back in the saddle for Flynn? No. Cleveland first needs to upgrade at wide receiver, and the front seven needs fixing since the Browns allowed almost 150 rushing yards per game in 2011 (ranked No. 30).

Will the Browns pursue Matt Flynn? Yes, but not as hard as Miami

Wild Card: Seattle Seahawks

We all know that the Seattle Seahawks are in the need for a quarterback. And although they have no direct connections with the Green Bay Packers like the Miami Dolphins, they are one team to keep an eye on.

Seattle holds the No. 12 overall pick in the draft, is expected to have a good amount of cap space available and runs an offensive system that's comparable to the Packers'.

Head coach Pete Carroll is an offensive-minded genius, and although Tarvaris Jackson has improved, he's still a few steps back of Flynn. With a stout ground game and solid defense, the Seahawks are a possibility for Matt Flynn.

The Seahawks also provide a good receiving corps and Flynn would be the expected starter during training camp. In short, this is just food for thought as the NFL free agency period nears, because the Seahawks are very close to becoming a complete team.
