New York Giants Should Seek a Trade with Kansas City, Acquire WR Dwayne Bowe

During the New York Giants’ 27-0 shutout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football, the team suffered a crucial blow when wide receiver Victor Cruz suffered a torn patellar tendon, per Giants team reporter Dan Salomone. Salomone went on to write that the Giants lost their star receiver for the season.

Cruz led the Giants in receiving yards with 337. Without him, Rueben Randle takes over as the top receiver on the team with 247 yards and 28 catches. Quarterback Eli Manning has thrown seven touchdown passes to tight ends Larry Donnell and Daniel Fells, but the Giants now have a wide-open spot for a No. 1 wide receiver.

Giants general manager Jerry Reese needs to make a move and bring in a veteran receiver. In doing so, New York’s offense can be a threat and the team overall can continue to be competitive and make a push for the playoffs this year. Kansas City should be the first place of interest for Reese.

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe might be the team’s best option in trying to trade for a veteran receiver. In fact, if the price is right, trading Bowe to New York could benefit both teams.

Bowe has been quiet in Kansas City the past couple of years while playing for three different quarterbacks. A change of scenery could be the best case scenario for him as well.

Through four games this season, Bowe has caught only 14 passes for 195 yards and has been targeted just 24 times. After coming off a 2011 season in which he had 81 receptions for 1,159 yards, Bowe has recorded fewer than 60 catches in 2012 and 2013.

Since quarterback Alex Smith arrived and Andy Reid became the head coach of the Chiefs in 2013, Bowe’s biggest game came in the Wild Card Round of last year’s postseason, when he caught 10 passes for 150 yards and a touchdown as the Chiefs scored 44 points without running back Jamaal Charles.

But he has been extremely quiet in the regular season under Reid’s guidance and with Smith under center. His best regular-season game since 2013 came earlier this year on Monday Night Football against the New England Patriots, when Bowe pulled in five catches for 81 yards.

Ever since the Chiefs locked up Bowe to a five-year deal worth $56 million prior to the 2013 season, he has been a big disappointment. Working with Manning could help New York’s offense and also turn Bowe into a better and more active receiver.

The Giants are currently 3-3, just two games behind the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys, who are tied for first in the NFC East with a 5-1 record.

By adding Bowe, the Giants will have a chance to stay in the mix in the NFC East or clinch the playoffs as a wild-card team.

If the idea of adding Bowe does not work or is not in the foreseeable near future, the Giants can also look to Buffalo for a receiver.

ESPN.com’s Mike Rodak reports that Bills wide receiver Mike Williams’ agent requested permission to seek interest for a trade. Bills general manager Doug Whaley said on Monday that the Bills are not shopping Williams at the moment but will listen to offers. Williams has caught just eight passes for 142 yards and a touchdown.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson said he wants to play for another team back in July. Johnson currently has 34 catches for 419 yards and a touchdown. If the situation has remained the same in Houston, the possibility of bringing him to New York is realistic.
