2008 NFL Mock Draft: Kansas City Chiefs

Herm Edwards knows that you play to win the game...but you can't win games in the NFL without doing well early in the draft. After a beating from Raider Nation, SeanMC is just hoping to keep KC fans happy with the fifth pick in his 2008 mock draft.

3) Atlanta Falcons: Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College
4) Oakland Raiders: DeSean Jackson, WR, California

The Longest Mock Draft in NFL History Continues...

Let’s go over what we’ve learned so far in the mock draft:

1) Raider fans are extremely sensitive.

2) If I’m right about the first four picks, either Darren McFadden or Chris Long will drop all the way to the Jets at six.

3) I shouldn’t write about teams I don’t like within 24 hours of a Patriots Super Bowl loss.

4) Nobody in the Patriots’ secondary can catch a frigging football.

(Might still be a little bitter).I like the Chiefs—as much as an East Coast guy can like an AFC West team.

The best thing about the Chiefs is that they’re not the Raiders, Broncos, or Chargers.

The worst thing about the Chiefs is, of course, Herm Edwards.

It’s amazing how an offense can go completely to crud as soon as Herm takes over a team. I know there were other factors—an aging offensive line, a quarterback who had more concussions than touchdowns two seasons ago, and no real wide receivers to speak of until Dwayne Bowe stepped up.

All that is completely understood.

But I would have bet both my kids' college funds on KC’s offense grinding to a halt the minute they replaced Dick Vermeil with Edwards.

Herm Edwards is to NFL offenses as Michael Vick is to pet dogs.

So, what about the fifth pick in the 2008 draft?

If Herm is going to insist on running Larry Johnson into the ground, he might as well put together an offensive line that can open a few holes.

And if Johnson isn’t healthy next season, they might want to get someone to block for their young QB.

If you look around the web, something like 99% of the mock drafts out there have the Chiefs grabbing Jake Long; he would be the perfect fit here, but we already have him going to St. Louis with the second overall pick.

After Long, I’m not sure there’s a tackle prospect worth taking this high. If Long is off the board, they’ll either address the offensive line later in the draft or trade down.  We’ll work under the assumption that they’ll address it later in the draft.

Some people have them picking a quarterback here.

I don’t see it. There’s no way they saw enough of Brodie Croyle to decide they need to waste an early first round pick on another quarterback. If Matt Ryan is still out there, there’s a chance they might reconsider. But we have him coming off the board at three.

The Pick: Chris Long, DE, Virginia

Not bad for a second choice. While the Chiefs' offensive line problems might have stuck out the most, their defensive line was pretty terrible as well. They gave up an astounding 130 yards per game on the ground.

You cannot win in the NFL with a  run defense like that.  Herm Edwards likes to think that he’s a defensive coach. He knows he’s not winning in Kansas City with the defense he’s currently throwing out there. You play to win the game, and you win games by building from the inside out.

Second Choice:  Vernon Gholston, DE/OLB, Ohio State

The Chiefs need playmakers, and Gholston is a playmaker.

He can get to the QB, he can drop back into coverage, and he can stop the run. He’s a defensive coach’s dream.

Jake Long, the guy most mock drafters have the Chiefs taking, was absolutely abused by Gholston. He certainly wouldn’t be a bad choice here by Herm Edwards and Co.

Best Player Available: Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas

I’m starting to think that my whole draft day plan is going straight to hell because Jerry Jones is going to pull a reverse-Herschel Walker and grab the first pick from Miami so they can draft McFadden.

I’m torn between my wanting to laugh at Dallas for making such a dumb trade and my love of watching prominent NFL draft prospects squirm as they drop further and further down the board.Until the trade actually happens, McFadden is still my pick for a longer-than-expected draft day slide.

At least for one more pick…

  1. You can look forward to me commenting on all of your mock drafts because I can agree with them all. First they need to replace their piece of trash general manager. Their offensive line is terrible, and Larry Johnson can't be the best he was in 2007. The QB situation was weird. When Brodie Croyle was the start then Tony Gonzalez would have a great game and Dwayne Bowe would disappear. If Damon Huard started it was Bowe who had a great game and Gonzalez would disappear.

  2. When Damon Huard was in the game Tony Gonzalez got the ball a tone!!Is this a joke? I think you might have mixed it up..But look it up, Tony had HUGE games when Huard was in there. It was like he was the only receiver on the field..And then Brodie seemed to forget about Tony initially..Anyways it doesn't matter. And personally, Larry will be fine once we have a new line..Kolby and Larry will make a great duo..We just need some new young studs on the line, some defensive upgrades, and another play making wide receiver..Yeah its a lot I know..The chiefs really do need to consider getting a legitimate receiver either through the draft or free agency..Someone in the 2nd or 3rd round. I like Limas Sweed or Jordy Nelson..Webb is worth keeping because he has shown flashes of talent and he is young (inconsistent)..Parker and Kennison should step aside..Kennison was terrific during his career at kc but he just didn't look the same this year..

    1. Yeah I got it mixed up.

  3. The Raiders will never select DeSean Jackson at #4

If I have to say one, I think they will try to get:
    1. Chris Long
    2. Glenn Dorsey
    3. Sedrick Ellis
    4. Darren McFadden

If C. Long, Dorsey or Ellis are not there, they will probably try to trade down

  4. I hope they leave Desean Jackson for the Bengals, since Chad is wanting to leave.

  5. Sean...I love this so far. I find that (because I'm Canadian) I have a harder time following US College sports because you guys put the same emphasis on it that we put on junior hockey up here-so it's kind of like me doing a mock NHL draft (Wait..you're a genius...I want to do that....evil plan initiated). My real point in writing this? Have the Pats make a trade. Have them package the pick with the rights to Asante Samuel (he wants to much, I don't see him coming back) to grab some young linebackers, or maybe just move a spot or two (up or down) to grab this Vernon Gholston who-from the impression I get from you-could almost be a younger Tedy Bruschi? I think that if you drafted him though, you'd have to move him to the middle, because that's where the Pats are the weakest. Rosey Colvin and Adalius Thomas will be back next year, but the Bruschi/Vrabel/Seau dynamic is the one that's aging. You can hold on to those guys (barring retirement) and still integrate two young linebackers, which provides this team with the active legs they need.

  6. agreed!!!!!!

  7. "Raider fans are extremely sensitive."

Be careful, you're treading on thin ground, Sean. They might just follow you wherever you go.

As for the pick, I am tempted to think that they may go with QB. Maybe Brohm or even Woodson. But I like this pick as well. Nice work.

  8. ok bryan you can't talk about US sports because you don't seem to know shit. cuz asante samuel is an unrestricted free agent and he will not re-sign with the cry baby patriots so he can't be traded. Secondly, sean you are an idiot. The chiefs would not draft chris long with their first pick because they have already an all pro in jared allen and a solid, quick, playmaker in Tamba Hali. And they wouldn't waste a top 5 draft pick on an outside linebacker when they have donnie edwards and derrick johnson playing outside. Also they have a solid backup if edwards retires in keyaron fox. and on the chiefs defensive line it is fine. They may have let up 130 yards a game in rushing but their defense ranked 14th overall in yards per game. Remember the chiefs faced adrian peterson, l.t.(twice), jones-drew and fred taylor, and addai. what they need is a cornerback since ty law is washed up and surtain is steadily declining and they need to fix the offense which ranked 31st overall. Offensive line is the most important draft need for the chiefs. Like you said sean they had one of the best offenses in the nfl a few years ago, why? they had the best o-line plus tony richardson (whose in minnesota for who? o yeah adrian peterson) which helped average players like priest holmes and trent green and eddie kennison excel. when you can't protect your quarterback or block for your running back you're gonna lose. Look at the patriots in the super bowl. cased closed

    1. Tamba Hali and Keyaron Fox? Are you serious? Jared Allen is a free agent...if he goes, Tamba Hali will get overpowered every down. He's not strong enough to handle an NFL doubleteam.

Keyaron Fox is a backup. Tops out at "serviceable backup". If you want to go into next season relying on Hali and Fox, all the power to you. Have fun watching teams line up and run right through you for another 16 games...

The NEW YORK JETS rushed for 199 yards against the Chiefs....they were a joke. An absolute joke.

  9. I think we all agree that there are several positions the chiefs need to address. I see urgent needs needs in this order - 4 of the 5 O line spots, 2 starting corners, wide receiver and FB. We could also use upgrades at DT and Kicker, a good nickel back, youth at linebacker and TE. The chiefs do have 11 pickes this year (not all of those pick have been clearly identified) but even will 11 pick that is not enough to mee all of the chiefs immediate needs. If long is gone and Mcfadden is still on the board I see the Chief trading out of this spot and getting additional pick. I believe the Cowboys are interested in mcfadden and I suspect they would be willing to trade at least their two first round picks and their second to get a prize like Mcfadden. ( this would be equal points according to the NFL value chart. ) Then the chiefs have a chance to address both right and left OT wr and CB in the first two rounds. That would go a long way to getting them to 500 ball this year.

  10. hey sean all i got to say is 18-1. haha and jared allen is not going to be a free agent cuz they're either gonna sign him or franchise him. and i don't see edwards retiring so yeah i'm sure relying on fox since he's still on the bench. We'll see how good the patriots are soon, especially their defense which is so old they can't even run with the afc. i like how they showed bruschi and seau together at the super bowl celebrating a championship. o wait they didn't ha, old asses

    1. Did a KC fan just talk smack about the Patriots finishing 18-1?

      A KC fan?

      Are you kidding me?

Have fun in the AFC West basement....

  11. They need a kicker.

That's what they get for trading Tynes to the Giants.

  12. Ok chiefs fan here...I gota set this article straight...this is our priority in the top 5...dont count on us trading down...

1st Jake Long (we are 99% sure he will be gone)
2nd Sedric Ellis (this is where we are mostly leaning these days)
3rd Glen Dorsey (only because of the injury issues)
4th Matt Ryan (have you seen B. Croyle?)
5th Run DMC (if all the others are gone..we may take him or try to trade down with the cowboys)
(looking for their 2 first round picks...but this is last resort)

We dont want to trade down or up
We will adress OT in the 2nd
We will adress CB in the 3rd
    or something resembling this

And to the author...why the hell would we take one of the two DE elites in the draft when we have Allen/Hali...seriously...what are you on and where can I get some?
