Buffalo Bills vs New England Patriots: 5 Reasons the Bills Will Win
Without question, Sunday is the biggest game the Bills have had in years. The 2-0 New England Patriots enter Ralph Wilson Stadium to take on the 2-0 Buffalo Bills. That has a nice ring to it but 3-0 sounds so much better.
Many have been surprised by what the Bills have accomplished to this point. Even after winning their first two games though they are still more than a touchdown underdog to the Patriots at home.
In years past, I dreaded the two games every season the Bills had to play the Patriots but this team has a different feel around them this year. I don't think the Bills should be favorites but they got a puncher's chance and these are the top five reasons why.
5. Offensive Line
1 of 5What was once a glaring weakness of this team is quickly coming together as a unit. The Bills offensive line was ranked by STATS LLC as the top offensive line in Week 2. They weren't called for a holding or false start penalty once against the Raiders, an accomplishment I can't remember the last time they achieved.
Even left tackle Demetrius Bell is getting recognition by the national media. Pete Prisco wrote yesterday:
"When the Buffalo Bills opened the season, one of the big concerns was the offensive line, especially left tackle Demetrius Bell. Against the Oakland Raiders last week, Bell was matched much of the day against Oakland defensive end Matt Shaughnessy, a rising star. Bell neutralized him almost the entire game. He did a great job in his pass sets, getting a wide base, to handle Shaughnessy's power. And he opened a big hole on Fred Jackson's long touchdown run. Dominating Shaughnessy the way Bell did has to be a good sign for the Bills moving forward. Maybe Karl Malone's son will be known for his football now instead of his father.
"
If the Bills are going to have any chance the offensive line will need to play at this top level to neutralize Vince Wilfork and Albert Haynesworth, which is not an easy task.
4. Home Field Advantage
2 of 5Generally when people talk about home-field advantage for the Buffalo Bills they talk about the wind, snow and cold. However, the fans of Western New York are one of the loudest, most passionate fans in the NFL when they have something to cheer for.
Last week, after Fred Jackson's run to start the second half to the final second of the fourth quarter, I don't think a single fan sat down. This was the reason the Buffalo Bills put the 12th man up on the Wall of Fame and I know fans will do everything they can to have an effect on the game Sunday.
3. Ryan Fitzpatrick
3 of 5The Amish Rifle has been one of the reasons for the Bills turnaround this season and the guy has been playing lights out. He is tied for the league lead for touchdowns and is second in ESPN's Total Quarterback Rating behind only Tom Brady.
If the Bills have any chance they will need Fitzpatrick's gunslinger mentality and for him to put in a performance like he has the first two weeks. As long as the offensive line can keep him clean, Fitzpatrick can pick apart the subpar secondary of the Patriots.
2. Fred Jackson
4 of 5The easiest way for the Bills to win on Sunday is to keep the Patriots best weapon, Tom Brady, off the field. The best way to do that is with a strong running game and luckily for the Bills they have the league's leading rusher.
Fred Jackson has been running like a man possessed this season and fans who have watched him the past few seasons are not surprised by the results. He finally has an offensive line that is opening holes for him and making teams pay.
1. Second-Half Adjustments
5 of 5Chan Gailey is the first coach in a very long time for the Bills who has excelled at second-half adjustments. Dating back to last season, Coach Gailey has shown an ability to make quality halftime adjustments and was able to get the Bills back into games.
The game Sunday will not be an easy task for Gailey as he goes up against a talented New England Patriots' coaching staff. However, he is no slouch and is an offensive guru. If he can make the proper halftime adjustments like in past games, the Bills should be right in this one until the end.
