Kansas City Chiefs: 6 Reasons They Are Doomed In 2011 Season
The reigning AFC West Champions were not expecting this kind of a start to the season. The Kansas City Chiefs are 0-2 and are statistically the worst team in the league in many categories.
Following the loss to the Buffalo Bills on opening week, Chiefs head coach Todd Haley said the Chiefs were not prepared. It clearly shows that the Chiefs were not prepared after losing their first two games on a combined score of 89-10.
In the past four regular season and postseason contests together, dating back to Week 17 against the Oakland Raiders, the Chiefs have been outscored 150-27. It is clear that the struggles that took place at the end of last season have carried over to this season.
This is already one of the worst starts in Chiefs history. The Chiefs have lost many key players for the season and are not able to compete against their opponents.
Here are six reasons as to why the Chiefs are doomed this season.
As always, chime in and let me know what you think!
The Chiefs' Injury Bug Is Spreading Fast
1 of 6This is the worst month in Chiefs history. The Chiefs have lost three players in just as many weeks. Coincidentally, Tony Moeaki, Eric Berry and Jamaal Charles all tore their ACLs and are out for the season.
The Chiefs went through all of 2010 without a serious injury. At the very worst, the Chiefs lost Matt Cassel for one game as he had to undergo an appendectomy prior to a game against the San Diego Chargers.
This year, the injuries continue to increase as Charles becomes the sixth player on the team to be placed on injured reserve.
There is no telling who is next on the Chiefs' roster. Players are aware that one play could end their season, and in some cases, their career.
The Chiefs must be careful from here on out and keep their players in tip-top condition.
The Offense Is in Trouble Without Jamaal Charles
2 of 6As you read in the previous slide, Charles tore his ACL and is out for the season. Without Charles on the team, how will the Chiefs offense function?
In the past four blowouts, the only bright spot on the Chiefs was Charles, who scored a rushing touchdown last year in the regular season finale against the Raiders and another against the Baltimore Ravens in the opening week of the postseason.
This year, Charles caught a touchdown pass against the Bills to give the Chiefs their only score of the season opener. No one on the team has caught or rushed for a touchdown in the last four games.
Tailbacks Thomas Jones, Dexter McCluster and Le’Ron McClain will have to work together to help carry the rock and make up for Charles’ absence.
Dwayne Bowe has been non existent for the Chiefs this season and could not contain two passes against the Lions as one of his tipped passes turned into an interception.
The worst part about this, the Chiefs have Bill Muir as their offensive coordinator and calls the plays for the team. It shouldn't surprise anyone as to why this is Muir's first time ever calling plays in his 46 years as a coach. No head coach was ever confident in giving him the responsibility to call plays for a reason.
The Chiefs are last in the NFL in points scored after two weeks with only 10, and without Charles, the Chiefs are poised to have the fewest touchdowns among all 32 teams in the league this season.
Matt Cassel Is not a Reliable Quarterback
3 of 6Chiefs fans are looking back and are frustrated that Cassel received a six-year deal worth $63 million after having just one good season with a New England Patriots offense that shattered many records.
Since coming to Kansas City, Cassel has not stepped up against high caliber defenses. Cassel went through the 2010 season with 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions because of the lack of strong opponents last season.
At the end of last season, Cassel began to reveal his true colors. Throughout this four-game stretch, Cassel has thrown one touchdown and nine interceptions.
Chiefs fans in Kansas City have voiced their opinion. They want Andrew Luck to come in and replace Cassel as the Chiefs starting quarterback in 2012. At this rate, it is likely the Chiefs will receive the No. 1 overall selection in the draft. The question is, will they go after a new quarterback?
The Chiefs Cannot Protect the Football
4 of 6The Chiefs have been dominated in the turnover battle and are losing 9-2 in that department in the two combined games.
The Chiefs have fumbled the ball away to their opponents on offense, defense and on special teams this season. (To avoid confusion, Chiefs safety Jon McGraw did fumble after intercepting a pass.)
In Week 1, the Chiefs threw an interception and fumbled twice. In Week 2, the Chiefs threw three interceptions and fumbled three times. In two weeks, the Chiefs have given the football away nine times.
Football fans know that turnovers can easily decide the outcome of a game. It certainly has helped opposing teams score over 40 points on the Chiefs.
The Chiefs Defense Is Awful, Gruesome
5 of 6The absence of Berry is already showing just how valuable he is to the team. The Chiefs cannot tackle and have given up 89 points this season, the most among all NFL teams.
While the Chiefs do have Tamba Hali, Brandon Flowers has not played well. Flowers was picked on by the Bills and Lions and is responsible for giving up several touchdowns so far this year. Oddly enough, Flowers signed a five-year contract extension worth $50 million after the loss to the Bills. So far, Flowers is showing that he is not worth the money this season.
Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and Lions quarterback Matt Stafford each threw four touchdowns against the Chiefs.
Romeo Crennel is going to have the longest season of his career as he has to reconstruct this defense. Will he be able to do so without Berry on the team?
The Chiefs Have Todd Haley as Their Head Coach and He Must Be Fired
6 of 6As I alluded to earlier, the Chiefs have scored the fewest and given up the most points in the league.
In each of the two postgame press conferences, Haley says he takes full responsibility for everything that happened.
Following the loss to Buffalo, he admitted that his team was not prepared. That makes me wonder, what were the Chiefs coaches doing while the Bills and Lions were preparing?
That is a poor excuse from a head coach. The head coach must have his team prepared.
Haley left a lot of his starters on the field in the preseason finale against the Green Bay Packers. However, the backups on the Packers found a way to defeat a Chiefs team that had most of their starters on the field for all four quarters.
During the preseason, Haley told the media about his approach and that he has a plan. Obviously it is not working for Haley. Saying that he accepts full responsibility is not going to cut it either.
The fact that he admitted that his team was not prepared proves that he is not worthy of being a head coach in the NFL. Coaches in this league spend hours preparing their players and strategizing for games. Haley took a night off to go to a Lil Wayne concert.
Scott Pioli must pull the trigger. I don’t know when it will happen, but he must fire Haley. Haley hurt the team the most after having unnecessary disagreements with Charlie Weis. Weis claims he is leaving for the University of Florida to be with his son, but there is no doubt that Weis is using that excuse as a shield to prevent talking about the issues with Haley.
Everyone knows that the Chiefs have a more difficult schedule this year as opposed to last year. The Chiefs were lucky enough to receive Buffalo and Detroit for their first two games. Many people in the local media expected the Chiefs to start the season 2-0. No one expected the Chiefs to get annihilated in these two games.
Haley is not doing the Chiefs any favors and must go.
