Chicago Cubs: If Mark Cuban Had Bought the Cubs in 2008

Jeff ChaseJun 7, 2018

When the Chicago Cubs went up for sale, there were many bidders as expected.

There was one bidder that stood out from the rest.

The eccentric Dallas Mavericks owner was not only extremely interested in owning the franchise, but the fans were extremely fond of the idea also.

Ultimately, we all know what happened. The Ricketts bought the Chicago Cubs, and even though they are Cub fans, they are no Mark Cuban.

What if Cuban had won the Cubs though?

Money Would Not Be an Issue

Mark Cuban would do anything to be known as the guy who brought the North Side a World Series.

I think Cuban would spend every cent in his pocket to do so, just to fulfill his ego.

That is what Cubs' fans knew with Cuban. They saw a George Steinbrenner coming to their team.

You know who saw that too? The opposing owners in the league. Since the owners must approve of the new owner, Mark Cuban had a huge hurdle to get over since they did not want another Yankee-like squad in the Midwest.

If Cuban would have been able to get past this though, imagine what he could have done.

Anybody that seemed to be a player that would be a dream away, would have been a reality.

CC Sabathia, Cliff Lee, Alex Rodriguez (had he opted out) and an ongoing list of stars. Cuban would have gone for them to make something happen.

The Cubs Woud Have a Big Screen Television

2 of 4

I am all for keeping Wrigley Field the same way, on the inside.

If there is one thing Wrigley Field is missing though, it is a big screen, especially one for replays.

This may seem nonessential to fans, but think about how many times you have attended a game at Wrigley and were unsure what happened in the last play.

Now I know many people would be outraged if the Cubs altered the outfield scoreboard. I, for one, would be a part of that angry mob.

Mark Cuban though would keep the integrity of Wrigley Field and he could have added a screen without affecting the ball park.

Where you may ask?

Only those of who make the journey to Wrigley Field would understand this, but in right field there is one rooftop that has just a billboard on it.

This way, the Cubs would have been able to add a display without affecting the inside of the park.

It would not have been viewable to all, but it would have reached a good amount of eyes.

I do not see the Ricketts adding something like this within their budgeting, but I can only hope they will replace those 25-inch monitors from 1993 with some upgraded high definition televisions.

The Cubs Would Have a World Series

3 of 4

I am not saying the Cubs would win a World Series under Mark Cuban just because he won an NBA Championship.

Cuban, though, knows a thing or two about winning. His Mavericks have always been at the top of the Western Conference, and I could not see him settling for anything less on the North Side.

Baseball is a little more difficult to control since there are so many aspects of the game, but there at least would have been consistency.

With a winning mentality and a willingness to spend, the Chicago Cubs would have won a World Series under Mark Cuban.

Note: I am not saying this present day, but that the Cubs would be in a better position today then they are now.

The Fans Would Embrace Him

4 of 4

I know the Ricketts are Cubs fans, but they act like owners.

No one is a bigger fan of their teams then Mark Cuban.

Mark Cuban didn't grow up in Dallas, but somehow he is the biggest Dallas Mavericks fan. It is definitely because he owns the team, but the way he embraces ownership is different then any other owner.

Most owners are these big shots who watch from their luxury sky boxes.

Cuban, he would be in the bleachers. Not just once in awhile either, but every game. Mark Cuban is a fan first, then an owner.

That being said, he understands what it is like to be a fan. Not just a businessman. Cuban would be incredibly involved with the crowds and would have made fans feel like they have someone who really understands them.

I know the Ricketts are usually out there at the games, but they sit in the front few rows. Real fans sit in the bleachers.

That is where you would have found Mark Cuban.
